Everyone at Voluta is incredibly kind and professional. It's just an amazing atmosphere to be in! Unlike most shops that are loud and intimidating and want to rush you in and out, Voluta really sets the bar high! Had great 30 minute 7/27/11 consultation with Dina. Dina stated the cost was going to be $100 / hr & one time $25 for design fee. She also mentioned I would receive an email with draft design 5 days before the scheduled appointment. I left a $200 cash deposit & asked how much cash does she think I should bring on appointment. Dina said, "if you bring an additional $125, you should be fine". Her limited availability and my busy schedule, my appointment was scheduled online and confirmed for 8/11/11 and received my first draft on 8/8/11 (only 4 days before scheduled appointment). I sent back the email of the wonderful design with some feedback and questions and never heard back from her until this late morning, day before the scheduled appointment So today 8/10/11, I received an email from Dina cancelling my appointment because she going to be out sick for the rest of the week. She made no mention as to when it could be made up or an offer as to when she would be available, but knowing I was very busy next week I requested a refund. I expected to pay for the $25 design time for the draft drawing, she never answered my questions about. However, she sent me another email stating the design time cost was now $75 and for me to send an address to mail the check to. Since she didn't mention when the check would be mailed, I have no idea which address to give her. Dina is no longer answering my emails and I'm waiting on answers to the following: Why the increase in design time cost from $25.00 to $75.00 after the fact? When will check be mailed, so I know which address to pass along? Dina's exact wording I requested a refund, because there no reason for me to have $200 floating around for 3 weeks with no end in sight (because Dina isn't offering much). "I am sorry that my illness is that much of pain for you. Our policy is to mail your deposit back minus the design time that will be $75. As for your complete lack or care and concern about my well being it is clear that you are not a good match for Voluta and I will not be able to work with you. What address would like us to send the refund." UPDATE: I filed a compliant with their local BBB I text Dina asking for email reply, she stated in email that since I'm no longer a client to not text her and that I'm harassing her ~ (until I'm refunded, I'm still a client ~ not harassment if I'm trying to get my refund) Dina finally replied & stated she now recalls our conversation and a refund of $175.00 will be mailed ~ did not supply mail date, so I still couldn't send an address eMail from Conan (owner), "From here on you communicate with me only. A female told you that you're harassing her. Get it? $25/hr. design fee. You're welcome for a custom design by an artist who cares. The design is now yours. $100/hr. tattoo artist fee. As good as it gets in Indiana. Dina spent three hours on you, so you will get the difference, $125. I will mail your money to the address you specify. You have alarmed all of us with your hot/cold flip. This is your official, written notice that you are not invited to Voluta Tattoo. Should you arrive at our door we will consider it malicious. Don't do that." I have emails & a receipt confirming the math to $175.00. Gotta love the his last words ~ Really, is that what you think of me and how I would handle this matter? I'm going to assume that statement was made based on PAST ISSUES. UPDATE: They said today a check was being mailed for $125.00. Well once they canceled my scheduled appointment and I no longer wanted to have them sitting on my $200 cash deposit ~ they didn't like that Not filing small claims court because the total cost is $95, so in the coming months I'll use online tools to make sure others know about how SHADY they are UPDATE: Received $125 check from owner & it's memo stated, "(My Name) Contract Breach ~ LOL, WTF ~ They canceled and didn't offer a replacement appointment even after I asked about coming the next day after the one they canceled. FYI, Seemed like a great place but just make sure you PLAY their GAME or it will cost you. read more

Conan is an intense guy and passionate about his craft. He could easily make this about him, he's that good. But as soon as you meet him, you know he loves what he does and completely enjoys creating an experience with you. He makes you feel comfortable and takes the time to explain how things will work. He shares what techniques he thinks would work best to make your story come alive on your skin, all while respecting the story behind your piece. Obviously when getting a tattoo you want your artist to be an AMAZING ARTIST. That's a given. Conan is exactly that, and much more. He is an amazing and unique artist. Then you discover that he is also an incredibly compassionate, warm, wickedly intelligent, and sensitive human being as well. I've worked with two other tattoo artists before, and both were good artists, but super quirky, as one might expect artists to be. Conan is so personable and deeply cares about the entire experience his clients are receiving. I was referred to Conan by a good friend of mine, who had a couple of tattoos done by him over the years. I have always admired her tattoos, and since moving back to the area, I was excited to meet her artist and see what he might suggest for cleaning up two tattoos I've had done by other artists. One of my tattoos is a little dated, and I'm sensitive about it's placement and style. Not once did Conan say something negative about the pieces I have. Given his talent, he could easily be arrogant and people would forgive it because he is that good. How refreshing that he is not that way AT ALL. The studio has a very home-like vibe, with tons of all of the artists' work displayed. It is clean, inviting, and inspiring. I initially visited the studio with my husband, who was also having a previous tattoo added upon. I hadn't fully decided if or when I was going to have my tattoos worked on further. But witnessing his skill and the discussion and planning process with my husband...my mind started turning! Looking around at the art hanging everywhere (and you can find much of Voluta's artists' works on their website; Conan, Michele, and Jaydee), seeing the variety and uniqueness of each piece, combined with the comfortable and warm atmosphere...I knew I was going to approach Conan to see if he could help me love my own pieces as much as I was loving the art on his walls. After the work he did yesterday, I already do love my art, and it's not quite completed. He spent much time with me prior to beginning the inking process getting to know me, what my artistic sensibilities were, and offering ideas as he got to know what my eye was drawn to. He is a true collaborator, which is incredibly important in his line of work. For someone as talented as Conan, he could easily be cocky and make the experience all about the glorification of his own work. But as I said, Conan is far from that kind of person. If you are willing to let the work speak for itself and don't want the grandstanding that a lot of tattoo artists do to promote their work, then Conan is your guy! I want to move in. My husband and I both got inked by Dina after getting multiple recommendations from friends. Seriously, that was one of the greatest Friday nights of our life. It was like hanging out with good friends and getting a tattoo. Gerritt, Conan and Dina were in the shop and there were mutiple clients from out of town. That's how great this shop is - people drive from MI to get ink here. They are serious artists too - you MUST return in 2 weeks for a touch up. I was disappointed after my celtric knot looked less crisp because my skin feathers the ink... not to fear! Conan, Dina and I came up with a cover up for my silly old Kanji which will tie together all my back art and minimize the impact of the feathering. I can't wait. read more

What can't I say about Conan's work at Voluta? Professional, specific, clean and superbly excellent artistry that is displayed all over the website and inside the studio. Let that be the first reason you contact Voluta... look at the work and let it speak for itself. The artistry is amazing. Period. Now that that is out of the way, I think the other reason Voluta is an amazing place to be is the people... On my third visit (first was consultation about my design, second was laying some serious ink, and third was my wife updating an old tattoo because she like what he did with me so much), we were treated like royalty... The other artists in the room are kind, friendly and make the entire vibe of the studio a place that is relaxed and comfortable.... and the art work (tattoos, paintings, drawings, photos) that surrounds you while you are there is just incredible. Conan made us feel like like we were an integral part of the entire artistic process from the design on... everything was explained in great detail from the type of instruments being used and why/how they work to trying to bring alive the story behind your ink in the way that will look the best on your body while respecting fully what it is that you want. Respect being the operative word. My tattoo is a very large back piece that will take several visits to complete... I couldn't be happier with how it's begun and where it's heading. I'm looking forward to spreading the word about Voluta as much as I can... in an odd way, it's like having a very compassionate doctor or even mechanic. I found Conan Lea's Voluta Tattoo 5 or 6 years ago while browsing tattoo galleries on-line. I had a piece I wanted done and was reviewing all the artists attending that year's convention in Detroit. I searched every single artists portfolio that would be there plus others from across the country to find the artist who's work meshed with my taste. I contacted him, he liked my piece, we booked and tattooed. The experience and results exceeded my expectations and I became a regular client. We recently finished a back piece where I wrote the story, Conan interperted my words, and painted the picture. I provided no visual references and simply trusted in his capibilities. Whatever Otis H. said is completely my experience but with Conan himself in the early days of Voluta. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if Conan gave breaks on his tattoo's for a positive review here since his shop has seen nothing but trouble since he came into town with his drama. He brings drama wherever he goes and is legendary in his own mind and thinks he gets to treat people poorly because of that. Wasnt too long ago his database was compromised giving sensitive information to whomever including SS #'s. I dont need this kind of drama just getting a tattoo. He is also the type that you get what HE wants you to get, not the idea you had coming in the door. Either that or he'll twist your idea into his own since thats all he cares about. That alone tells you how much he cares about clients. I had an appointment with him at Voluta a few weeks before it was even about to open and the previous YEAR he talked and talked and talked about doing some ink but too much drama and it never happened (it was always; gotta get the kids from school, drama with the wife, eating ice cream that day, etc... any excuse). The guy just has a gift of gab and loves to talk with very little game to back it. So im supposed to be special and he wanted me to feel special for jerking me around a year and said and i quote "come in for this appointment and there will be NO distractions like before, no kids, no wife, etc... and the kids are actually with the wife". He gets ink in the wells and i almost sit down when he gets a call - its his daughter and she needs picked up from school - just the opposite of what i was told. He literally started packing up while on the phone. Tried to reschedule me for at least 3 weeks out as he was walking out the door. This is not a man of his word nor a man who has any integrity. I honestly would rather have a guy from the local State Pen. ink me anytime over Conan. Im looking for honesty and integrity along with good work from a tattoo artist these days. Not a dramatic boy with his head in the clouds who talks a good game but cant follow up. Professional this boy is not. Bizarre that he's even able to squeak by a living still having the same lame business practices many years later. And just because you bought a spot on Angies List doesnt mean much. Like other people have said, if you are willing to play their game and put up with Conans drama, ego and flakiness (you might have appointments strung out for many months never getting any ink done) - you might just love this place! Just dont write Screw Me Over on your forehead before going in - Conan would probably like to do that for you. Saying Voluta Tattoo is the absolute best around is an understatement. Voluta is better than the best! I got work done by Conan in 2009. It was a piece honoring my grandfather and I could not have imagined anyone else doing it. It is such a phenomenal piece of art! From that moment I vowed that I would never get a tattoo from anyone besides Conan. Well, I broke that vow in late 2012 when I had the pleasure of getting some work done by Michele, while she worked alongside Conan on 2 additional pieces. We spent time during both my sessions getting to know each other and talking about ideas, not just about what I was currently getting done but also what I may be getting in the future.
