Great experience. Everyone there was super friendly and inviting. Brandon was great to work with. He did a fantastic job of taking what I had in my head and translating it into an amazing tattoo. If you are looking for a cool place full of professional artists check them out! read more

Outstanding place. My wife and I see Sam who always does an outstanding job. Her work is outstanding. The shop is very nice with a great atmosphere and decor... nice music and lighting. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back. read more

This is not your daddy's tattoo parlor! Art, ink, professionalism, intelligence, and fun all stand behind the door at Voluta...but don't go knocking on it because you won't get in. Voluta is a consultation only studio where your tattoo begins with an email and ends with an absolute work of art on your body. No flash, no friends of the artist hanging with their boys while eating smelly take-out, no artist telling you to hold up while they finish their cigarette, no giggly girls pining for their first butterfly tattoo (not judging giggles or butterflies, I like them both)....you'll find that Conan and his crew have created the perfect environment for how serious tattooing truly is. All work is done by appointment and the artists will work with your schedule to get things started. Their website is a little heavy, but wading through it you'll find their philosophy, their galleries, and their individual biographies so you choose someone you feel comfortable with from the start. I was fortunate enough to meet Conan and Ashley while working with my artist, Amory Abbott. They're all wonderful, but I have to give huge kudos to Amory since it's his original sketch and handiwork on my body. Couldn't have asked for a more quirky and talented person to spend literally hours upon hours up close and personal. If you're ready to really invest in an idea with your money, your time and your heart, this is the place to go... I will never again step into a tattoo parlor where the artist talks more to the receptionist than he does the client in his chair. read more

What can I say that Nicole C. hasn't already stated? I'm not sure. All I know is Voluta is the absolute best!!! Dina (my artist) is amazing and professional. While I was being tattooed Laura was doing a full side on another girl who was getting her first tattoo (talk about courage!) both artists made me feel comfortable and at home. Not some icky tattoo parlor with strange men/woman staring at me while I am getting inked. Thanks Voluta for not making me feel like an outcast for enjoying tattoos!!! read more

Receiving a tattoo from Voluta provides an unprecedented experience. I recently finished a larger custom tattoo that Conan and I have been working on for a long time. After listening deeply and asking lots of great questions, he helped me artfully tell my story. The Voluta experience is one of partnership, connection, creativity, luxury and kindness. Get in line to experience Voluta for yourself! read more

Everyone at Voluta is incredibly kind and professional. It's just an amazing atmosphere to be in! Unlike most shops that are loud and intimidating and want to rush you in and out, Voluta really sets the bar high! Our last visit here was for my husband's tattoo, but I wanted to tag along just to be in the shop. Every piece they do is incredible. We did our research online and happened to stumble upon Voluta, but I'm so glad we did. After sitting for tattoos in 6 different shops, I honestly can't see myself going anywhere else! Voluta really encompasses a truly zen and meaningful tattoo experience. Btw, if you want a truly artistic watercolor piece, see Michele. She did my last piece and it is stunning...she's great! Conan and Jaydee are pretty fantastic too. read more

Voluta Tattoo - Tattoo by Michele...a beautiful memorial to my sweet baby boy. - Tattoo Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

Had great 30 minute 7/27/11 consultation with Dina. Dina stated the cost was going to be $100 / hr & one time $25 for design fee. She also mentioned I would receive an email with draft design 5 days before the scheduled appointment. I left a $200 cash deposit & asked how much cash does she think I should bring on appointment. Dina said, "if you bring an additional $125, you should be fine". Her limited availability and my busy schedule, my appointment was scheduled online and confirmed for 8/11/11 and received my first draft on 8/8/11 (only 4 days before scheduled appointment). I sent back the email of the wonderful design with some feedback and questions and never heard back from her until this late morning, day before the scheduled appointment So today 8/10/11, I received an email from Dina cancelling my appointment because she going to be out sick for the rest of the week. She made no mention as to when it could be made up or an offer as to when she would be available, but knowing I was very busy next week I requested a refund. I expected to pay for the $25 design time for the draft drawing, she never answered my questions about. However, she sent me another email stating the design time cost was now $75 and for me to send an address to mail the check to. Since she didn't mention when the check would be mailed, I have no idea which address to give her. Dina is no longer answering my emails and I'm waiting on answers to the following: Why the increase in design time cost from $25.00 to $75.00 after the fact? When will check be mailed, so I know which address to pass along? Dina's exact wording I requested a refund, because there no reason for me to have $200 floating around for 3 weeks with no end in sight (because Dina isn't offering much). "I am sorry that my illness is that much of pain for you. Our policy is to mail your deposit back minus the design time that will be $75. As for your complete lack or care and concern about my well being it is clear that you are not a good match for Voluta and I will not be able to work with you. What address would like us to send the refund." UPDATE: I filed a compliant with their local BBB I text Dina asking for email reply, she stated in email that since I'm no longer a client to not text her and that I'm harassing her ~ (until I'm refunded, I'm still a client ~ not harassment if I'm trying to get my refund) Dina finally replied & stated she now recalls our conversation and a refund of $175.00 will be mailed ~ did not supply mail date, so I still couldn't send an address eMail from Conan (owner), "From here on you communicate with me only. A female told you that you're harassing her. Get it? $25/hr. design fee. You're welcome for a custom design by an artist who cares. The design is now yours. $100/hr. tattoo artist fee. As good as it gets in Indiana. Dina spent three hours on you, so you will get the difference, $125. I will mail your money to the address you specify. You have alarmed all of us with your hot/cold flip. This is your official, written notice that you are not invited to Voluta Tattoo. Should you arrive at our door we will consider it malicious. Don't do that." I have emails & a receipt confirming the math to $175.00. Gotta love the his last words ~ Really, is that what you think of me and how I would handle this matter? I'm going to assume that statement was made based on PAST ISSUES. UPDATE: They said today a check was being mailed for $125.00. Well once they canceled my scheduled appointment and I no longer wanted to have them sitting on my $200 cash deposit ~ they didn't like that Not filing small claims court because the total cost is $95, so in the coming months I'll use online tools to make sure others know about how SHADY they are UPDATE: Received $125 check from owner & it's memo stated, "(My Name) Contract Breach ~ LOL, WTF ~ They canceled and didn't offer a replacement appointment even after I asked about coming the next day after the one they canceled. FYI, Seemed like a great place but just make sure you PLAY their GAME or it will cost you. read more

One would never say that Indianapolis is a pioneer of the tattoo industry. There are several shops popping up and several up and coming artists trying to make a name for themselves. But Voluta is one of a kind. Founded by Conan who with close to 15 yrs of experience is in a class of his own. He and Michele are putting Indy on the map of the tattoo world. His studio is in an awesome space in the historic Stutz building. The vibe is comfortable and artistically invigorating. You can just feel it when you walk in. Conan is an intense guy and passionate about his craft. He could easily make this about him, he's that good. But as soon as you meet him, you know he loves what he does and completely enjoys creating an experience with you. He makes you feel comfortable and takes the time to explain how things will work. He shares what techniques he thinks would work best to make your story come alive on your skin, all while respecting the story behind your piece. If and when he takes on more artists in his studio, you know they will be talented and trained by the best. I can't say enough about this place. I'm thoroughly impressed. Conan is an amazing artist who is confident but at the same time always looking to improve his talent. If there ever came a day he moves, I would make the trip...no matter how far. read more

Obviously when getting a tattoo you want your artist to be an AMAZING ARTIST. That's a given. Conan is exactly that, and much more. He is an amazing and unique artist. Then you discover that he is also an incredibly compassionate, warm, wickedly intelligent, and sensitive human being as well. I've worked with two other tattoo artists before, and both were good artists, but super quirky, as one might expect artists to be. Conan is so personable and deeply cares about the entire experience his clients are receiving. I was referred to Conan by a good friend of mine, who had a couple of tattoos done by him over the years. I have always admired her tattoos, and since moving back to the area, I was excited to meet her artist and see what he might suggest for cleaning up two tattoos I've had done by other artists. One of my tattoos is a little dated, and I'm sensitive about it's placement and style. Not once did Conan say something negative about the pieces I have. Given his talent, he could easily be arrogant and people would forgive it because he is that good. How refreshing that he is not that way AT ALL. The studio has a very home-like vibe, with tons of all of the artists' work displayed. It is clean, inviting, and inspiring. I initially visited the studio with my husband, who was also having a previous tattoo added upon. I hadn't fully decided if or when I was going to have my tattoos worked on further. But witnessing his skill and the discussion and planning process with my husband...my mind started turning! Looking around at the art hanging everywhere (and you can find much of Voluta's artists' works on their website; Conan, Michele, and Jaydee), seeing the variety and uniqueness of each piece, combined with the comfortable and warm atmosphere...I knew I was going to approach Conan to see if he could help me love my own pieces as much as I was loving the art on his walls. After the work he did yesterday, I already do love my art, and it's not quite completed. He spent much time with me prior to beginning the inking process getting to know me, what my artistic sensibilities were, and offering ideas as he got to know what my eye was drawn to. He is a true collaborator, which is incredibly important in his line of work. For someone as talented as Conan, he could easily be cocky and make the experience all about the glorification of his own work. But as I said, Conan is far from that kind of person. If you are willing to let the work speak for itself and don't want the grandstanding that a lot of tattoo artists do to promote their work, then Conan is your guy! In both visits (the first with my husband, and the second for my tattoo session) I met Jaydee, who was working with another client, music was playing, there was lots of discussion and laughter...you truly feel like you're being welcomed into someone's home and family. You feel taken care of and respected; they are as interested in getting to know YOU as they are in putting beautiful art on your body. So if you care about the experience you are receiving, want incredible artwork on your body, and maybe walk away with some new friends...you should without a doubt go to Voluta. I can't wait to go back! read more

I want to move in. My husband and I both got inked by Dina after getting multiple recommendations from friends. Seriously, that was one of the greatest Friday nights of our life. It was like hanging out with good friends and getting a tattoo. Gerritt, Conan and Dina were in the shop and there were mutiple clients from out of town. That's how great this shop is - people drive from MI to get ink here. They are serious artists too - you MUST return in 2 weeks for a touch up. I was disappointed after my celtric knot looked less crisp because my skin feathers the ink... not to fear! Conan, Dina and I came up with a cover up for my silly old Kanji which will tie together all my back art and minimize the impact of the feathering. I can't wait. read more

I got my second tattoo from Dina this past May, and as usual, the service was phenomenal and the final product was beautiful. Dina has a great touch, and I attribute her skills to the fact that I always heal so quickly and without incident. read more

I have been a friend first and a client second now for almost 10 years. His work is original by each client and designed from clients inputs. I've gotten tattoos from four different states and five different tattoo artists. This shop was by far one of the most comfortable environments of a tattoo shop that I've ever been in. Jaydee did my tattoo. I get complimented on it anytime I leave the house! Both Conan and Jaydee are very welcoming, friendly and engaging. I love my art and wouldn't hesitate to go back to Voluta for ANY of my future tattoos. read more

What can't I say about Conan's work at Voluta? Professional, specific, clean and superbly excellent artistry that is displayed all over the website and inside the studio. Let that be the first reason you contact Voluta... look at the work and let it speak for itself. The artistry is amazing. Period. Now that that is out of the way, I think the other reason Voluta is an amazing place to be is the people... On my third visit (first was consultation about my design, second was laying some serious ink, and third was my wife updating an old tattoo because she like what he did with me so much), we were treated like royalty... The other artists in the room are kind, friendly and make the entire vibe of the studio a place that is relaxed and comfortable.... and the art work (tattoos, paintings, drawings, photos) that surrounds you while you are there is just incredible. Conan made us feel like like we were an integral part of the entire artistic process from the design on... everything was explained in great detail from the type of instruments being used and why/how they work to trying to bring alive the story behind your ink in the way that will look the best on your body while respecting fully what it is that you want. Respect being the operative word. My tattoo is a very large back piece that will take several visits to complete... I couldn't be happier with how it's begun and where it's heading. I'm looking forward to spreading the word about Voluta as much as I can... in an odd way, it's like having a very compassionate doctor or even mechanic. There's thoughtfulness and ease in the room... the client is the focus, and making sure the client is fully aware and respected and part of the journey... that seems to be the focus at Voluta. Oh yeah, and the work is incredible. Period. Because of the people. read more

I found Conan Lea's Voluta Tattoo 5 or 6 years ago while browsing tattoo galleries on-line. I had a piece I wanted done and was reviewing all the artists attending that year's convention in Detroit. I searched every single artists portfolio that would be there plus others from across the country to find the artist who's work meshed with my taste. I contacted him, he liked my piece, we booked and tattooed. The experience and results exceeded my expectations and I became a regular client. We recently finished a back piece where I wrote the story, Conan interperted my words, and painted the picture. I provided no visual references and simply trusted in his capibilities. We just won in Miami this month in the best back piece category. Looking forward to many more visits to his tattoo oasis in downtown Indy. read more

I can't comment on their talent but the fact that the only way to contact them is via email which they don't respond to is enough for a poor rating. If you don't value your customers enough to even respond timely (or at all, responded after 2 weeks of waiting to set up consultation then never responded to my reply at all) then you aren't worth it no matter what talent you have read more

Drama, drama, drama. I'm getting emails from artists that they've committed mutiny and started their own studio, followed by replies from the owner about my personal information being compromised in VERY DRAMATIC LANGUAGE. I originally thought it was kind of cool that they were so exclusive; now it just seems like posturing. Go someplace where they themselves (but not tattoos) less seriously. read more

Conan and Michele are both incredible people and artists. I got my first tattoo from Conan after reading and hearing great things about him and couldn't be happier. Conan is absolutely without peer in this region of the country. I came to him with a tattoo idea that held great personal importance to me from my time in the Peace Corps. Conan created a piece of art greater than I could have believed. He is the most dedicated service professional that I have ever come in contact with and goes to great lengths that at the end of the day I received more than I ever asked for. This does not even go to mentioning Conan's artistic brilliance. Contrary to the typical "parlor" Conan treats his clients like family and has genuine interest in the motivation and vision behind the projects he undertakes. There is only one choice for tattooing in Indianapolis and it is Voluta Tattoo. Thank you Conan. read more

Voluta Tattoo is a rare gem in this city. It is beautiful not only because of its interior, but because of Conan and Michele. I feel lucky every time I look at my tattoos from Conan and an incredible guest artist he brought to Indianapolis (Caryl Cunningham). I am lucky because my tattoos were done by artists who care with the heart of a best friend. Conan is unforgettable as a person. His art speaks for itself. I dare you to find a better portfolio in Indianapolis. The process of "conjuring the custom tattoo," as Conan puts it on his website, is nothing short of thrilling. I knew exactly what I wanted and Conan made it better. He wanted to know every detail and he wanted it to be special for me, the client. This I liked. Every email I got with artwork made me feel like a little kid on Christmas morning! The ability for him to take my idea and put it into a work of art was amazing. To see my thoughts full of life on my computer screen blew me away. In a way, I came up with it - but it was Conan who brought it to life. *It seems conceited to me to say this, but my tattoos are extraordinary. They are not your run of the mill tattoos. They are rare. They are custom. They are only mine. This I love. For this I have Voluta, Conan and Michele, to thank. When inside Voluta, there is a sense of home. It is so cozy, and comfortable, and cool. Conan and Michele care about your comfort and make you feel more than at home. It is the caring mentality that draws you in. Conan and Michele are truly genuine. Friendly doesn't cut it as an adjective; Conan and Michelle are beautiful people. It is the incredible work that keeps you coming back for more. You will just have to see it for yourself. www.volutatattoo.com There is not a single cell in my body that would ever consider going anywhere else but to the tattoo studio that Conan and Michele own. It is worth the wait, which I was once told at a Panic! At the Disco concert by a happy client. It is. If you are waiting, hang in there. You will not be disappointed. I plan on going back again and again, no matter the wait. To say that I am pleased with my experience at Voluta is obviously an understatement. I am ecstatic. My life has been changed. I look at my tattoos and feel joy, content, special, and fulfilled. It is 100% good. Bonus Jonas: Watch out for guest artists that Conan brings to Voluta. They are the cream of the crop and brought to Indianapolis by Voluta (how cool?!?). The opportunity to collect a tattoo from any of them in this city will not come around often so take advantage if you can. read more

Whatever Otis H. said is completely my experience but with Conan himself in the early days of Voluta. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if Conan gave breaks on his tattoo's for a positive review here since his shop has seen nothing but trouble since he came into town with his drama. He brings drama wherever he goes and is legendary in his own mind and thinks he gets to treat people poorly because of that. Wasnt too long ago his database was compromised giving sensitive information to whomever including SS #'s. I dont need this kind of drama just getting a tattoo. He is also the type that you get what HE wants you to get, not the idea you had coming in the door. Either that or he'll twist your idea into his own since thats all he cares about. That alone tells you how much he cares about clients. I had an appointment with him at Voluta a few weeks before it was even about to open and the previous YEAR he talked and talked and talked about doing some ink but too much drama and it never happened (it was always; gotta get the kids from school, drama with the wife, eating ice cream that day, etc... any excuse). The guy just has a gift of gab and loves to talk with very little game to back it. So im supposed to be special and he wanted me to feel special for jerking me around a year and said and i quote "come in for this appointment and there will be NO distractions like before, no kids, no wife, etc... and the kids are actually with the wife". He gets ink in the wells and i almost sit down when he gets a call - its his daughter and she needs picked up from school - just the opposite of what i was told. He literally started packing up while on the phone. Tried to reschedule me for at least 3 weeks out as he was walking out the door. This is not a man of his word nor a man who has any integrity. I honestly would rather have a guy from the local State Pen. ink me anytime over Conan. Im looking for honesty and integrity along with good work from a tattoo artist these days. Not a dramatic boy with his head in the clouds who talks a good game but cant follow up. Professional this boy is not. Bizarre that he's even able to squeak by a living still having the same lame business practices many years later. And just because you bought a spot on Angies List doesnt mean much. Like other people have said, if you are willing to play their game and put up with Conans drama, ego and flakiness (you might have appointments strung out for many months never getting any ink done) - you might just love this place! Just dont write Screw Me Over on your forehead before going in - Conan would probably like to do that for you. Never would i have been happy to have a tattoo on me from such a flaky individual with little to no personal integrity. The high turnover rate of people working with/under him is telling as well. For something so permanent i shouldnt have to deal with a flaky drama queen. I dodged a bullet here and YOU CAN TOO!! read more

Saying Voluta Tattoo is the absolute best around is an understatement. Voluta is better than the best! I got work done by Conan in 2009. It was a piece honoring my grandfather and I could not have imagined anyone else doing it. It is such a phenomenal piece of art! From that moment I vowed that I would never get a tattoo from anyone besides Conan. Well, I broke that vow in late 2012 when I had the pleasure of getting some work done by Michele, while she worked alongside Conan on 2 additional pieces. It is obvious that they care deeply about their craft and want to make sure their clients are happy with the work. We spent time during both my sessions getting to know each other and talking about ideas, not just about what I was currently getting done but also what I may be getting in the future. I really like the idea of my tattoos flowing into one cohesive piece instead of looking like a "sticker book" as Conan put it. I truly appreciated the time both Conan and Michele spent with me, making sure I was satisfied with the work. They are not just great artists, they're great people. I know it will be awhile before I can get back under the needle but it is totally worth the wait. And if you don't know, now you know. read more

I can honestly say that this is by far the best tattoo shop i have ever been in. The staff (conan and michele) are as friendly as they are professional. And lets not mistake here these people are not your run of the mill flash artists (no disrespect) that you run into everyday. Conan and Michele are true artists both classically and non-classically trained. They are as talented as they are level headed and friendly. When you walk into their shop they make you feel welcome and talk to you like your a real person. I would never get a tattoo done anywhere else even if i had moved out of state. The skill and comfort level you receive here are first rate and after experiencing it could not tolerate any less. read more

I just got my first tattoo from Laura at Voluta and I love it! She made me feel very supported and comfortable, taking plenty of time to talk with me about my ideas, sketch them, and explain the process. The atmosphere is fun and relaxing, but also very professional. She didn't have a problem with me bringing two friends along! I really appreciated the fact that the studio has a locked door and is by appointment only. The process was smooth, not very painful, and cost less than I thought it would! I strongly recommend Voluta and artist Laura! read more
