When I arrived, I was told that all dogs can only be viewed from outside the building - there are no meet and greets until an application is received and vetted first, which so far has been 5 days and I still haven't heard back. This doesn't make any sense . Why wouldn't they let the potential adopters meet and greet the dog first while they are on site, and if they are a match, then do the vetting ? The dogs are in kennels that have an indoor and outdoor run, there was poop everywhere in their kennels and the facility stank even from the outside. I felt so bad for the dogs. Some dogs in this shelter look like they have unaddressed medical conditions - I hope the shelter will take better care of them .

I did find two pets that I like and I was told both pets I had to make an appointment for a meet and greet but the two I was interested in I was told one dog was snappy and the other dog was not available because they had just come back from surgery. I did however make an appointment to meet with a Chihuahua upon my meet and greet I was told the dog didn't pick me so I wasn't able to get the dog. I could however make another appointment for another meet and greet but if the dog doesn't pick you then you can't adopt it. I've owned pets all my life I just lost my Schnauzer 15 years I had three cats for 20 years I have a bird for 25 years a giant yard and live by myself no kids there's no reason that I can't get a pet in fact I would give any pet a good home. The woman at the counter was fairly nice and if you are interested in a dog they will help you to get that pet But be warned this is not a quick process You will need to fill out an application do several meet and greets and then if the pet picks you You can begin the process to get your dog or cat. Some positive things I experienced here were they already no kill shelter. They are not about just taking your money they want to make sure the pet has a good home and you are worthy of owning that pet. Some of the bad things I experienced was the viewing of the dogs the cleanliness of the cages outside or not clean lots of dog poop. I will keep looking and keep trying to purchase a forever home pet for me but this shelter is very selective of who gets what pet. My overall experience was positive and I hope to visit often to see new pets.

It's…read morea registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that shelters about 10 cats at a time, and you can instantly feel the passion Cora, Uri, and the volunteers have for rescue work. They've created a space that is the true definition of "mi casa es tu casa"--the cats basically own the place, roaming around freely while they rehabilitate and wait for their forever homes. It's so heartwarming to see them in such a chill, loving environment. What I appreciated most, though, was the educational side of the experience. They really take the time to highlight FIV kittens--which is basically the cat equivalent to HIV--and explain how they can live totally normal, happy lives with just a few standard precautions. Cora even touched on the biases that exist, even among vets, so I loved that I left not only feeling fuzzy from cat cuddles but also a lot more informed. Whether you're looking to adopt a new best friend or just want to spend some quality time with some kitties, I highly, highly recommend checking this place out and supporting their mission! As for food, you can bring in anything you'd like and if you're there for their tail thumping thursdays, you can also order delivery to it. They cannot serve food due to local laws and guidelines. They do have packaged snacks and drinks you can purchase to enjoy. In addition, they have merch you can also purchase. All purchases, including tickets, help fund the nonprofit.

I was introduced to the Mansfield Animal Shelter back in 2012 when I discovered that they produce a…read moreprogram on the local community cable channel, where they show all the animals available for adoption. A fantastic idea that I wish more shelters took advantage of. After a few weeks of insufferably cute faces and accompanying sad stories, I ventured over. Be sure to check the hours on their website, because they're only open a couple of hours some days, and longer hours others, due to it being staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It turns out that they are affiliated with the town animal control department and many of their rescues have been picked up as strays, or left behind after a move. They also accept dropped off pets, though preferably not the 'basket left on the doorstep' kind, which sadly was part of some of the cats' histories. I found a clean, organized place with cats at one end of the building and dogs at the other. Lots of helpful staff cleaning cages, socializing animals and carrying out the administrative side of the shelter. I was able to walk through the cat room, interacting with the cats in cages (roomy, scratching posts and individual litter-boxes), and with some that are allowed to roam freely while volunteers are there. They also have a couple of communal cat rooms with several cats living happily together. The volunteers answered questions, and I was able to use a visiting room to see a couple of cats 1 on 1. On my second visit I met Jack-O. He was a fixed, 6 year old male tuxedo cat. He was terrified of having gone from owner, to shelter, to quarantine, to the vet and finally to a room full of cats in cages. I could see in his eyes that he had just disconnected and gone to a happy place in his head. He didn't respond to verbal or food-based cues, just stayed curled up with that 'thousand yard stare'. I knew he was the one for me. The adoption process was pretty simple; Application, references checked (previous pets and the vets that cared for them) and a reasonable fee for the process (includes fixing, if necessary). I found everyone that I dealt with pleasant, professional and above all devoted to placing all those animals in good homes. Four years later Merlin (formerly Jack-O) is a happy, healthy, furry, non-rent paying roommate with a passion for chirping at birds and knocking over priceless knick-knacks. He contributes only to my sanity, refusing to deal with ground level threats like ants and spiders. I'm still a sucker for the cable show highlighting their adoptables, and often watch with Merlin directly in front of the television occasionally reaching out to see who these intruders in our living room are.

Next morning, I talk to Animal Control and they say that there were no calls about a chicken, they don't have a chicken, etc. After I tell them what the regular police officer had said, Animal Control changes their story, without hesitation, saying they did pick up a chicken. However, they gave me the wrong contact information, not once, but several times. That agency hadn't received any calls about a chicken, from Providence, in the last week. Eventually, we tracked down the chicken. I find the whole incident exhibits a remarkable level of incompetence. I appreciate that Animal Control rescued the chicken, apparently above and beyond their required scope of performance. I also appreciate that the Wildlife Clinic is sometimes contacted about chickens, etc., and the caller is referred to Congress of Birds. However, if COB is contacted directly, then that should be related to the person making inquiries. I find it suspicious. I saw so many chickens, etc., at COB, and I wonder if it's because their families are given incorrect informaton. Moreover, I wonder if it's done intentionally. This is harmful to the chickens, their families, and the people trying to help both. I couldn't even go to work for worry about my chicken. There are good people trying to do good at Providence Animal Control, and do their job correctly, and even more. However, there are good and bad everywhere, including POV. We can't ignore it.
