I suffer from acute depression/acute anxiety. I took care of my sons cats while he convalesced . I adored them! after returning the cats I realized I had felt so much better with someone or something to take care of. I went straight to the shelters and looked around. In Pawt. I found the cat I wanted. He was older ( and quite rolly-poly ;) but i was fine with it. He was extremely affectionate and I knew my journey was done. I filled out the app and was told that I would hear back later that day or early in the following morn. Neither happened. I called...and called...and called. No one picked up, I went there 3 times on the the 25th. called on the 26th and.....no one answered. I finallly went up in person and was told the cat was already adopted. 1st they said someone had applied for him before I got there.!?..then the story changed to "he had diabetes and other health problems". The description paper on his door made NO mention of any problems. Then the staffer said that the adopter had a better RESUME ??!! I wasn't aware I was applying for corporate job!! Also, Ive owned nearly 15 cats in my life, some sick some not. I managed to take care of all of 'em. who's to say I was or wasn't competent to take care of this cat? I had bought all the things the cat needed plus some toys, I was excited but the result wass a hammer blow to me. I was livid! The fact is that these people didn't have the decency to inform me of all this. Simply put, they are incompetent. I dont care if they are volunteers or city hacks, no one should be put thru this.

We completed an application online and left a payment. One of our close friends was then contacted as a reference. Next thing I knew we had a home visit scheduled which turned into Spike's first night at our home and a member of our family. It was an easy process and we have a kitten that is very easy going and great with our kids (but not so great with our shower curtain but that's just catnanigans!) Note: The adoption fee cost covered chipping the cat and neutering through a local Providence shelter

If you can avoid this rescue, I sincerely recommend you do so. We experienced a total nightmare. We…read moreadopted a dog and were assured he was good with cats. We fully disclosed we owned two cats, a 2 year old and a 16 year old elderly cat. They gave us the dog only three days after two major surgeries, but the foster gave us very minimal details about the medications and did not tell us he had been on a previous medication. The dog ended up having a paradoxical reaction to his medications, and I had to call the vet who did the neuter and cherry eye to figure out what to do. We had to keep him in a crate a lot for his own safety, because a cherry eye surgery needs the dog to be almost entirely activity free for two weeks. When the dog was able to be calm, I allowed him on the couch with me. He attacked our elderly cat twice, and every time he laid eyes on her, it was obvious he wanted to chase her down. One of these attacks resulted in my cat being bitten. The foster then tried to say he probably just put his mouth on her, but she cried out in very obvious pain. He BIT her, full teeth on her flesh. The foster also tried to blame my cat for the dogs behavior, stating it was her fault for not fighting back. She has been around numerous dogs, and none have ever treated her this way. Its inexcusable to say it was her fault. The foster was maybe the worst part of the whole experience. She was rude and condescending and even implied it was my fault my previous dog passed away earlier this year from a silent tumor that burst on his spleen. She also picked apart every single medical decision I made for my animals in a way that felt like I was being severely judged and looked down upon. We did literally everything in our power to save that dog. My husband and I feel that we were lied to, especially by the foster. This dog was not safe with cats, was highly reactive, and should not have been given the okay to come into our home. We were told he was polite with cats. The temperament and behavioral issues were withheld in a way that felt deliberate. It took over a week with multiple phone calls and emails to finally receive our money back.

We didn't have an appointment but when we arrived the girl working the desk (Abby) said there were no bookings so we could come in. She showed us the animals and explained the details of each one, age, temperament, cost etc, and answered some of my friends additional questions which had nothing to do with the animals. We got an application and Abby went over all the costs with us so we could write them down. She couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. As sad of a place as an animal shelter can be, she brightened it up and made our visit enjoyable and informative. Hopefully my fiends family will adopt a cat from this location and I know when I'm looking for a an animal this will be one of my first stops. Thanks Abby and all the cats and dogs in west Warwick.

The day we picked Lily up (she's from Louisiana, we're from MA), she came in an 18-wheeler truck with tons of dogs in crates stacked in the back of the truck. The dogs were howling and barking like crazy. It was unbelievably loud. When they gave Lily (a 9 lb. chihuahua/doxie mix) to us, she was completely traumatized. Shaking, covered in her own urine (we were told that the transporters do not stop for breaks), just a complete mess. I felt so badly for her and the other dogs. Anyway, we got her home, bathed her, loved on her tons and got her to feel at home eventually. She was extremely timid; afraid to eat, go out...everything scared her. Nearly a year later, she is a completely different dog. She is just the best fur baby and is adored by us. At some point prior to picking Lily up, Elaine had explained to me that she had had surgery to remove bladder stones (and it was in her medical records) and did great. Once we brought Lily to the veterinarian where we live for a complete exam, the vet told us that the bladder stones could be a lifelong issue and she'd probably need surgery(ies) in the future. Insurance will not cover it as it's a pre-existing condition. Didn't matter...we were NOT giving Lily back. To make a very long story short, I had contacted Elaine mostly via email several times and told her what the vet had said. Recently some tests were run for Lily to check for stones (x-ray, urinalysis, exam) for which I had asked Elaine for reimbursement. (approx $230-I wasn't asking for the entire visit) She and I had gone back and forth about this for quite some time and the final answer is that they will not help out when, in fact, they could've prepared us before we rescued Lily that this could be a lifelong problem. Now retired and on a fixed income, we may not have chosen Lily if we had known all of this prior. I told her that the agency should be more forthcoming with issues to potential adopters and that I was disappointed with their decision. I also explained that I'd leave a yelp review. I just want people to be aware and informed when rescuing. It was our first time and wish we had been aware of this issue with Lily. After reading several reviews, I have to agree with others that Elaine is very condescending and rude. Also, she never stops talking about her life and her dogs when all the while I was trying to communicate about our fur baby. Not saying we'd never rescue again but it definitely won't be with small dog rescue of new england.
