Came here because this is another restaurant that my friend recommended…read more I want know if this was recommended based of their scenery or the food itself? Because I don't believe it was the latter. When we first came down, no one was at the front desk. Stood there for 10 minutes and nothing. Finally the bartender came out from the bar to seat us and finally spotted the host who was busy chatting it up with the customers. I get you have to be personable and etc, but not if you're the only person in the FOH. There should be at least 2 people in the FOH, but if you have one person, be sure to cut the small talk and be back to seat your other guests. We sat outside and nice view, but not breathtaking. Got the following items: Don Javier | El Tequileno Reposado Tequila, salted cola, verjus, angostura bitters I want to say this is the first place that actually made me a proper cocktail here in the land where they're not known for cocktails. I don't drink beer and I don't like to drink wine because it makes me sleepy and I want someone to actually make me a drink rather than just opening it. This drink deserves 5 stars and standing ovation for the bartender who actually knows how to make cocktails. Rock oysters | Michelada, guajillo oil - these oysters were super briny and putting the sauces didn't help cut the taste. I ended up squeezing more lime and that helped tremendously. Queso Fundido - Melted cheeses, WA lobster, sweetcorn esquites, salsa locajete, flour tortilla | This was okay, it didn't blow me away even with the lobster meat. Skirt steak, pickled nopales, queso fresco, salsa arbol (GF) | Okay steak was overdone, super dry and tasteless. Fried chicken, pickles, kale slaw, chipotle tomatillo salsa | Chicken wasn't dry so that's good, but where's the flavour? After that, there was a super long wait, about 20 minutes before we got the below items. I was about to drop dead on the table because I was super tired and this dinner was longer than expected due to the lateness of the food and not to mention the lateness on seating us. "Chorizo y papas" potato gnocchi, chorizo ragù, pico di gallo, brown butter crema | Okay, didn't care for their version of gnocci - it literally resembled our side dish that A decided to order. It didn't even look like a gnocchi. I said to A, why did you get a potato gnocchi and a side of sweet potato? Didn't even taste like a gnocchi - basically just eating a regular potato. Sweet Potato, pomegranate, chile arbol miso, lemon myrtle, sesame This reminded me of something I had in Asia, which a good thing - nostalgic in way, but I was like I got two potato dish. I would put this place to go for cocktails but not for food.

The classic decor is lovely with various seating options including lounge booths. Pleasant ambient lighting and music. A good option for a bite to eat as they offer tapas plates, share plates, salads and even more substantial meals. There is a three small plate deal for $41 / four small plate deal for $50 which is quite good value. The drinks menu is extensive. Prices are quite expensive. I had a $16 mocktail but it was tiny. Cocktails are $19-26. Beer is $9-12. Coffee is $7! They do a cold drip coffee for $3 which is quite nice. They also offer high tea $55-$75 and high coffee $60 during the day. Quite nice to stop in for a drink before going out or before heading back to your room.

So this time round, now that I am merely counting down the days to a nursing home tub chair, we settled on something here in Sydney. That we are soon off to Madrid made me long for Spanish food but our morbid dread of overpriced, cod ordinary tapas, nearly steered us clear of that culinary quest. Then we found Postales... Stereotypical to my sexuality though it may be, I do not gush easily and give out full marks even less but here, we found the perfect romantic place to eat. The glorious architecture of what looked more like the crypt of a great cathedral than a reconfigured old post office, the cosy and comfy booth, the subdued lighting and the effortless service, all served as a perfect backdrop to an exquisite array of fine food. We chose the 'Fiesta' menu 'cos it well, sounded like something you'd eat on your birthday. Among the stand out performers: the calamari, which was light and tender, the chorizo, which was elevated in flavour by a deliciously spicy sauce and the sautéed spinach, chickpea and cauliflower, which had a bold authenticity thankfully not dumbed down for the local palate. Throw in some churros and crema catalana for dessert, along with a jug of refreshing sangria, and this ranked as one of our best dinners ever. If I had to quibble over anything, it would be to beg the owners not to stop at just one slice of that delicious 'miche' bread. Highly recommended, especially for lovers...

I was jazzed up and frothing for the twice-baked Gruyere souffle with crab and caviar but that thing was a let-down, maybe my expectations were way off base because in my head I was picturing a bowl filled with melty hot cheesy gooey goodness and what came out was a puffy cake type thing topped with pate, and hey, it's not their fault that I don't know what a souffle is. But let me tell you, friends, the steak tartare made up for this. It was astonishing, the combination they nailed with the minced steak and the egg and the right amount of seasoning and bite, it took me back to that time in Montmarte with that girl that didn't eat meat so I got to eat the entire tartare and that's exactly how it should have been because I wouldn't have shared anyway. We also got the buffalo mozarella tomato salad, also great, and a bottle of a crisp South African white that had me buzzing like wasp. Got a hot date? This is your huckleberry, everyone was dressed up, the couples seats outside on the pavement are where you want to be, although sitting at the bar is also a good option. It's a pretty classy place, wear your good pants.

Come on in and let the knowledgeable staff show you how to pair your meals with champagne from entree right through to dessert. The atmosphere here is very relaxed yet stylish and the decor transports you to an elegant time where good meals and good drinks are available. We managed to get the table in the back for a tasting menu of food and champagne. We started with an antipasto plate and a glass of mistelle. Mistelle is a liqueur that tastes like a palate cleanser and is bright and vibrant. This was brilliant with the salami and lucienne bread stick. For our first course we had spanner crab & lobster salad with seared scallops, drizzled with shellfish infused oil and a port reduction & pickled fennel side. The scallop was cooked deliciously. And the fact that it was topped with a perfectly poached quail egg made the dish. This dish was paired with a glass of Ruinart Blanc de Blanc - a delicious champagne from the oldest champagne house in France made with Chardonnay grapes. It was refreshing and was a great accompaniment to the seafood based salad, most certainly a champagne you want more than one glass of. This was followed by a course of steak tartar and fries. We were interested by this dish as it is not one that comes up on menu often, yet it is a complex and extremely flavoursome bite. We loved it. This time Mistelle paired the dish with a glass of Pol Roger. It was interesting having the staff explain how good champagne is with a light seafood dish and then having them serve up a heavier meat dish and more champagne. The style of this champagne though balanced the flavours and style of the steak tartar. Next up was one of my favourite meats - duck. It is rich and when cooked well is moist and delicious. Mistelle does a brilliant pan fried duck that is accompanied by a celeriac purée, dutch carrots, broad beans and flavoured with a raspberry jus. The colour of this duck was pink and it tasted delicious, my favourite dish of the night for sure. Paired with a Brut rose from the youngest champagne house in the world - Brincourt. At this point I stopped questioning the different champagnes and realised that paired correctly with the meals, makes them appropriate with any meal - not just as a starter or at the end of an evening. To finish with we had a beautiful Brie cheese, that was creamy and smooth and another glass of Ruinart, this time one of their non-vintage. A very strong finish to what were 4 fabulous dishes with matching champagnes. The staff here are passionate about everything they do and all that they serve up. The combination of formal dining, bar seating and an outdoor area means that this place has something for everyone. The first date or business dinner, those wanting to unwind after a tough day or simply those that like to sit back and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that runs through Kiora Lane. Happy Hour here is another draw card - $2 oysters, $15 cocktails on Wednesday - Friday from 3-6pm. This is a beautiful place, with fine food and owners that are genuinely enthused about their product and will pair your choices so that you have an amazing experience. Put it on your list.
