Pasta Emilia has nailed the perfect trio: great ambiance, food and service. The interior is perfectly lit with soft music in the background. There was plenty of seating, though the abundance of plants and quirky decor segmented the areas off nicely so it still felt intimate. We were actually sharing a (long) table with other patrons and didn't even notice their presence. The exposed rafters, bookshelves and cookbooks made it feel almost like we were in someone's home. The food was delicious! We really struggled to choose what to eat because everything on the menu was so appealing. We had a delectable entree of bread, salami and anchovies, followed by Gorgonzola gnocchi and game tortelli. The pasta was exceptionally fresh. The best measure of Pasta Emilia comes via the waiter's genuine look of surprise when I tell him that this is probably the best Italian I've ever had. Pretence does not exist here at all. Only authentic home-style cooking as if you were visiting your grandmother's house in the Emilia region of Italy. Another way to put it: greeted like family, fed like Kings! You have to try the Strozzapreti with Beef Ragu ($26 on Sunday Lunch menu). A Ragu that loyally sticks to the thinnest of pasta like nothing else you've experienced here in Sydney. How they get the pasta so thin is a well kept secret. The Ragu would be hours in the making to capture such big but palatable depth. Accompanied by the perfect board of antipasti including Salumi (salami), creamy pecorino, prosciutto and pickled vegetables. The bread is served warm here so you better scoop up some lovely vinegar-infused pickled mushrooms quick smart! ($22 Salumi Misti antipasti) I will definitely return, time and time again. Terrible! Would not return or recommend! Went with a group and had a set menu at $59 pp. Bread with olive oil to start and cold meats, asked for more bread which never came. Wine was ordered and had to be chased up twice before three instead of one glass was finally brought out (also after incorrect wine was served). Ravioli was uncooked -stiff as cardboard. "Ragu" sauce was without any trace of meat, tasted and looked like passata from the jar. "Winter salad" was wilted spinach and rocket with a few cashews on top. Dessert of tiramisu was the only ok dish but didn't make up for the rest of the meal and service. First and last time I will be here. Very slow service and boring tasteless food. read more

Fresh delicious pasta that you can tell was recently made. The staff were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very cool with mixed items and very rustic. We really enjoyed it here. I got the spinach pumpkin ravioli and YUM. You can taste the truffles very well. read more

I've been here a few times, once for a pasta making class and the other times for lunch. The pasta is always fresh and delicious. Service is a little slow so plan in advance to have extra time. I was SO looking forward to dinner here so I made a reservation as soon as I got into town on Friday night. When I called and asked to make a reservation for 4 for 8pm, I was told to "just come on in! We will have a table for you!" When we arrived, the place was packed and asked if we had made a booking. We replied no, we tried but were told not to, so they asked us to wait for about 10 min so we said ok. I was a little annoyed but determined not to let it ruin my night. We sat down at a table where my chair kept getting knocked on by people walking by, even tho they kept telling us while we waited that we would be given the "best seat in the house." Eyeroll. Ok, I get it, you feel guilty about telling us not to make a booking and then we had to wait. We ordered the fish tortellini (pretty good), sausage raft paparadelle (really good), duck tortellini (my dad really liked it) and I had the clams and pasta. It was SO salty I couldn't even eat it. It had taken at least 20 min after we had finished our appetizer (bread and roasted eggplant- it was meh) to get out food that I was too exhausted to complain. My husband, who puts salt on his food before even tasting it, ate some of it and I just had some of the paparadelle. Never coming here again. Casoni is way better. read more

Pasta Emilia, traditional Italian in the heart of Surry Hills. We would describe it as Italian rustic, a large space for guests to dine, pasta making out the back and a gourmet store downstairs for street access. Owner Anna Maria hails from Italy herself, from the Emilia Romagna region. She and her husband have significant experience in the restaurant industry, in Italy, Bronte and now, Surry Hills. The menu has traditional recipes using homemade fresh pasta using organic products from local farms, designed to change seasonally. The antipasto, from the region that is famous for these ingredients; prosciutto, cops, ham, mortadella, salami, olives, pickled vegetables, ricotta, parmesan, fritters with aged balsamic - the Bread (pinzemonio) was wonderful. The famous emilia romano pasta is made on site using cheese, balsamic and egg based pasta was incredible - we tried the beetroot spaghetti with walnut cream sauce, a beautiful pasta and the accompanying sauce worked well together and was easily our favourite dish of the evening. The duck and truffle ragu ravioli was also another top choice; pasta cooked aldente with a smooth tasty duck filling and a butter and crisp sage sauce. In true Italian style, the second main course, following the pastas was a great sharing dish with beef tagliata with fregola, balsamic and seasonal leaves as well as another highlight - the creamy burrata with salad. You also can't go past a dessert, and we certainly didn't, with a shared platter of flourless chocolate cake, amaretto ice cream, pannacotta, and a divine tiramisu. It wouldn't be a true Italian experience without wine, and we had an Italian Red and a refreshing Aperol Spritz. There are plenty of choices for an authentic dining experience. Underneath the restaurant is a garage space with a cliched vespa, walls adorned with in house produced small goods and earthen ware selling little marionette coffee, sauces, fresh frozen pastas to continue your Italian experience in your own home. Look. I get it. Service industry is hard. But Sunday at a local Italian that LOOKS like it would be homely and authentic... homely is right tho. We waited for 25 minutes before even getting our starter drinks. Aperol Spritz - you would think an easy drink. They were flat and clearly made with warm white wine and not prosecco. Anyway. We sat there for another 20 minutes looking directly at 3 wait staff as well as what appeared to be the manager. No service. No appetisers. If you love pasta like I do you will love this place..It has a beautiful rustic feel to it with retro furniture strewn around. I went here with a large group as part of the Food & WIne festival and was pleasantly surprised.. The charcutrie board had some very delicious meat cuts and rustic bread to go with, and the pasta main dish comprising of stuffed ravioli and a side of ragu was delicious.. Delicate well balanced flavours and fresh hand rolled pasta, my eyes almost rolled to the back of my head with satisfaction at the first bite! Now this is an interesting place. I had a pasta craving and decided to try some place new. Walked in and seated myself as there were no staff around (nor customers). Within a few minutes, staff starting milling about, but no-one bothered to come over. So I sat there and waited. And waited. And waited. Was tempted to continue waiting just to see how long it would go but my hunger got the better of me. So I called over to a waitress for the menu. The food arrived fairly quickly. The beef ragu strozzapreti. The sauce was good, some nice bits and some not so nice bits (aka. the massive hunks of beef that have clearly not cooked for long enough). It was also slightly bland (but then, I like my salt so that could just be me). So I asked for cracked pepper, for which I received a nasty scowl from the waitress. Maybe she was having a bad day. The fresh hand made pasta was amazing. Really really good, and very well cooked. Overall, the food was pretty good - I'd certainly eat here again. Wasn't so impressed with the service. I started with a cup of the Tazza Di bordo which tonight was duck. Amazing if my mother made duck broth this is wa it would be silky smooth decadent flavor full perfect. Then I moved on to a fresh mixed salad simple fresh good. Then I had a order of the strozzapreti with beef Ragu. FRESH PASTA and they do it right dish came out hot and stayed hot to the last bite gravy was done to prefection. I had asked for crushed red pepper and was politely told they didn't have it but I was pleasantly surprised when the Capetian or owner brought out the lil jar that I love seeing so much which I haven't seen at a resturant just at family's house. The jar was hot red pepper and oil which is let to sit and sit and sit and get hotter and hotter this one simple thing made my day.. This all left me wanting more I saw they had gnooci on the menue but not on the preparation I wanted. So I asked if they could make it for me nice and simple which they did in a fresh tomato sauce.. Light melt in ur mouth pillows of goodness amazing did I mention that this place is also a pasta factory by day seriously. I finished with a nice homemade tiramisu which I kno was homemade because they make them as individual portion in the same glass wear they use in the resuturant..
