About a few months later when I was there for my surgery, it was like I the surgeon was a different person, very cold. I got to go through the experience of being interrogated of why there even after providing multiple valid reasons why I chose for me surgery to take place there. While none suited his outlook, he reluctantly performed the surgery. Only reason I didn't run was the anesthesiologist was kind & nice (even calling a day after to check in on me). The flip side of the office staff, no one would give their name when I would call. Really got the feeling they were more cold than the surgeon himself.

I need to hype myself up just to book the appointment, and then double that to actually show up. But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. Then they act like I am the problem. I just needed to have someone (ANYONE!!!) LOOK at a tooth that I was concerned about. I thought I had lost a filling or chipped and wanted it fixed before I got on a transcontinental flight and moved to France. Plane rides can affect teeth due to the varying pressures. I was very clear on the phone that I was moving to France in two weeks and why I was concerned and that this was of an urgent nature and then they put me in a month later?!!! The only reason I would drive the distance that I did is for a wonderful hygienist I followed all the way out to Saint Johns from Lansing named Amanda. Dr. Connolly I have never been impressed with and has a not so great manner, rude actually. So I am glad I am moving and won't have to deal with this place anymore!! I didn't post this when it happened (February 2025) because I wrote it in my car as a threat to get them to find someone to look at my tooth while I waited. Then their very nice new dentist Dr. Cagan fixed my filling the next day and I thought all is well that ends well. But now I am learning that Amanda, my hygienist, is leaving to go to another office and I have to say I am not surprised at all given the toxic narcissistic energy that exudes from that office! I hope of Amanda's patients find her at Dr. Eby in Okemos! And it is to communicate that info that I decided to leave this review to warn others and help Amanda's patients find her because I would want to know where she moved to and move again with her. I doubt this practice will inform HER patients, despite them asking. They won't stay as she was the reason many people are even there. I wouldn't continue the drive without Amanda, if I still lived in the area. St. John's Dental Care's complete and utter loss on so many levels.
