The owners, the Pelligrinos and Rivera-Dugenios families, have a smoke-free policy on their locations, which we knew and accepted. However, it appears they do not permit smokers from becoming residents at all. More and more New Jersey is becoming a socialist state but denying someone access to assisted living because they smoke, takes away from Constitutional rights. Given this is a private facility, there are no constitutional rights on private property. Keep that in mind when putting your parent into assisted living. You're better off having in-home care.

My 90 year old mom was there for four weeks after a long hospital stay. Sometimes she waited over 40 minutes just to go to the bathroom. The aids never ask if there is anything else that she need, they walk right out of the room as soon as she is back in her chair, often forgetting to give her her call button. Instead of helping her get back to independent living they got her dependent on diapers. The physical therapy wasnt all that great either (they did not do too much). The food is horrible and my mom lost 15 pounds after the first 3 weeks without anyone saying anything to me. Oh and the showers, my mom got a foot fungus. and it took two weeks for her just to get her first shower. They sent her home without having a shower in 10 days. Like others said, there are a few nice people who care, but most don't. I saw the aids hanging out in an oversized closet so that they cant be found when paged.

The administration has developed a strong, caring culture and that every staff member embodies. Anita lived at Brandywine for four years and from the day she arrived, she began to look, feel and act younger with every day. After living isolated at home by herself for many years, she finally had a chance to meet some good friends and enjoy their companionship. Brandwine has many amenities for the residents including a gym, a cafe and transportation to shopping and appoinments. I found myself trying to help an entire room of helpless people while the attendant ignored all of us. It was a nightmare there. My own grandmother died under their so called care. We found workers always quickly spoon feeding her flat on her back, that is how people choke. It was just mortifying. There needs to be an accountability from the start and supervision and caring people who want to work in that industry, not insensitive, unskilled people who just need a pay check.

The bathrooms are relatively clean, just wish they had toilet seat covers (since I'm sure the older people would never be able to squat over the seat).
