Stopped in for my yearly eye exam and it was a breeze! I booked a few days in advance via phone (where you chat with a robot, but hey it was easy). Following that, I was sent an appointment confirmation via email as well as a quick form to fill out ahead of time. I can't say enough about the friendliness of the entire staff upon arrival. Like exceptionally happy and kind, all of them! I was checked-in a browsed the walls of glasses for a few short minutes before being called back. For the first portion of the exam, a technician performs a few basic tests including color sensitivity, glaucoma (or "air puff" test), and something that measures your vision prescription. From there, the doc calls you into the office for the rest of the exam. He uses a light to checks your pupils responsiveness and the surface of your eyes for signs of dryness/damage. Then comes the well-known part of the eye exam where doc asks you to read a chart filled with numbers and letters, followed by placing a big lens refractor in front of you and asking which lens changes seem to make your view of the chart better/worse. Easy as that! Oh and if you're in for contacts (like me) there's an additional portion of the exam where you put those in and doc checks to make sure they're fitting okay. All in all, it took a whole 10 minutes. Lots of contact options available through Visionworks, including all sorts of colored ones if you're into that. I actually had blue ones for awhile which was fun! Plenty of glasses to choose from too, plus prescription sunglasses. Takes roughly a week to get your order, in which they'll text you when it's all ready for pick up. Exam (without insurance) costs anywhere from $110-$150 depending on what you need. I believe there are add on tests on offer too, like the pupil dilation to deeper exam your retina/behind the eye. Note: there's only street parking available, so sometimes it's a block or two way. read more

I have been coming to this location for years and have consistently had a good experience. Staff, overall, has always been friendly and knowledgeable. The location is central and easy to find. My only things that stand out are that they seem to rotate through staff frequently so maybe it's something seen more so in this "industry?" I called and made an appointment. Unfortunately, I wrote down the wrong address and went to a Visionworks all the way across town. I raced back to this store, but was late to my appointment. I felt awful. However, the associates were really friendly and didn't hold it over my head. Also, I took almost an hour to pick out frames (I was indecisive) and I never felt rushed. I purchased a pair of glasses 5 months ago from Visionworks. I mostly wear my contact lenses and use the glasses on and off. The earpiece fell off this week. I brought the glasses back to Visionworks today. They charged me $35 to replace the broken frames. I said the frames only lasted 5 months and were not worn regularly. The employee said this was a common problem. The quality of the frame is poor and the customer service is worse. I would never go back and would not recommend them. read more

I walked in without any sort of appointment with broken glasses today, I lost the screw connecting the arm to the frame and two employees patiently worked on them (it was tricky because I had bent the metal piece that the screw fits in) and with diligence they fixed my glasses, free of charge. When they advertise two pair of glasses for $49 they are true to their ad. Unlike other places that reel you in with false prices Vision Works really has great deals. I got two pairs and an eye exam by Dr. Jurgen. This doc is really professional yet has a great personality making the whole experience enjoyable. My purchase included a pair of prescription sunglasses with Guess frames as well as regular eyeglasses also with designer frames. Definitely worth the visit as I saved over $500 when compared to my last eye exam and purchase at America's Best. Same prescription just much lower prices. I've been going to Visionworks for a little over two years now. The optometrist there has been amazing in helping me through my new found inability to tolerate contacts. Very generous with the samples, always checking and rechecking my eyes as needed. The staff are very nice and helpful and knowledgeable of the different insurance plans. The store runs amazing specials and sales, so you never have to choose between glasses or contacts, which is a huge relief. I highly recommend them! read more

I have been wearing glasses for 16 years now so I'm used to the biz. Both optometrists were extremely friendly and seemed knowledgeable. The staff was friendly, if a little unprofessional (I heard them gossiping about another coworker). Because my order was complicated I had to pay in two transactions. On the second swipe there was an error of some sort. When I asked her to try again (I had the money available on my card) she went from sweet and helpful to mean. She swiped my card again and there were no problems. She did not apologize for making me feel like a terrible leper after my card 'error-ed.' I'm not giving them 4 starts because it is a cookie-cutter-chain eye place, where they push the fancy lens upgrades and don't have the best quality customer service. It was a very beautiful day out today on April 6, 60 degree weather.... so I hung out on the east side, but became very tired of not being able to see clearly. So I went into Vision works and they gave me eye exam and help me pick out 2 pair of glasses for 99$. Of course they didn't take my insurance, but the price was where I could afford the prescription and the glasses. Thank god! It took a minute for them to figure out when I will get my glasses, but it worked out . They didn't have my lenses there, so they have to be order.Becky was sweetheart and very informative and James hasn't been there too long, but he was funny and made my wait a little tolerable.I received one pair in one week and will get the other the following week. Absolutely LOVE the amazing staff here. They are total nerds for glasses styles and have always been so excited to help pick out the perfect pair for me, in the two years I have been coming here. They are the most welcoming people and do their best to make you feel confident during the sort-of weird process of picking out glasses. I had been dragging my feet about getting my eyes checked out. I had a previous experience at a different chain retailer that left me traumatized. In short, I had a Dr who didn't listen when I told them that my prescription was wrong, and made it seem like it was all of a sudden impossible to fit my eyes for contacts, when I had worn them for over 10 years. My boyfriend had came to this location to get his check up and order contacts a few months ago. Last weekend, we had gone in together so he could pick out glasses. The first thing I noticed was how friendly and helpful everyone was. After him taking awhile to chose frames, I wandered off to try on glasses for myself. I ended up finding a pair I fell in love with. I knew to get them, I'd need to schedule an exam to update my prescription, so I scheduled an exam. Fast forward to today when I had my exam. I explained my concerns to the Doctor, who was very patient and attentive to my needs. She did a great job of explaining her process and how to ensure that we get the most precise prescription. After her exam, and triple checking her work, I was shocked to find out that my previous prescription was so off base! Not only can I see so much clearer, but she was able to get me fitted for contacts, something that I was previously lead to believe I could no longer wear. Now, here's where it gets better. They had a deal going on where if you ordered contacts, you got 60% off glasses. My insurance covered the total cost of my contacts, and I still got to take advantage of the 60% off glasses. Stephanie provided the lens selection and final order of my glasses. I appreciate how well she answered my questions about the various things to choose from. She was quick to shift directions as my own thoughts and questions shifted. She gave me thorough and knowledgeable, useful answers I used to reach my final decision. When a comparison came up between frames and lenses she quickly sketched out a 2 variable 4-price estimate on notepaper. I still have that price comparison and paid EXACTLY what it said for the selection I made - she'd included all tax and charges. I waited no more than 4 minutes to get started on the final purchase once I had frames picked out - although the shop seemed too busy for me to get service without a long wait. I highly recommend Vision Works in Shorewood. My experience there was great from beginning to end. The optometrist, Dr. Jurgens, was very professional and helpful. He was willing to take time with me and answer my questions. I have three pairs of glasses: progressives for regular use, lined bifocals for computer use, and single-lens for reading. Dr. Jurgens worked with me to prescribe exactly the glasses I needed for all three uses. The store staff was also very professional and helpful. This is a story of two optometrists. One I will soon visit, the other one I will never use again. Bespectacled bespectacledeyes.com When my bags got lost on my flight for vacation, my contacts were lost also. This put me in a tough spot as I can't see well without vision correction and the vacation consisted of activities where contacts were preferable. So I sheepishly called bespectacled explained the situation. Before I could ask them to send my contact prescription nearby, I was told that while they couldn't overnight a sample pack, they would be happy to fax my prescription elsewhere. No fees. No hassles. They wished me well on my vacation. Contrast that with Visionworks a year later. I had an appointment to get some new contacts. Unfortunately the samples didn't make it in before my vacation. No worries. These things happen. A few weeks later, since I wear glasses daily, I picked up the sample lenses. A month or two passes before I used the two trial weeks of contacts and concluded which type I would order. I called Visionworks and tried to place my order but I was told that I have to come in again for a fitting. I responded that I don't need another fitting, I would just like to order the contacts. No, I was told. The contacts won't be prescribed without the second visit. As silly as this seems--the contacts are on my eyes after all and I am pretty sure I know best if they fit--I agree to come back in. However, because its more than 4 weeks past my initial appointment, they will charge a new visit fee of $40. This doesn't seem reasonable so I asked, what harm my delay has caused I was told that its just policy. Some reviewers have said go to Visionworks on Oakland if you want cheep frames. But as you can see, they aren't cheap. They will extract as much money from you as possible. They aren't flexible and they don't put customers first. read more

After a broken-glasses emergency one morning, the incredibly accommodating staff at this site got me in within the hour and I left with a new prescription and fitted lenses/frames were ready by the end of the day. Staff was especially friendly and was very open and clear in their communications with customers- making it, by far, one of the best eye appointments I've had. I called on 4/8 to make an appointment for an eye exam. I made the appointment for 4/10 at 9:30 am. They asked for my insurance info. They told me they'd call me if they needed anything else. The morning of my appointment I get a phone call 18 minutes before I'm supposed to be there. The wanted me to come in 30 minutes later because the doctor wasn't in yet. I showed up, filled out the paperwork needed and got my eye exam. The doctor tells me I don't need to wear toric lenses on my left eye (made for astigmatism) anymore because my problem has been corrected. The previous year I went to Americas Best and had to pay $60 dollars for my contacts after my $105 insurance allowance and my exam copay. So I was sure this time it was gonna be cheaper since I didn't need the extra expensive contacts. WRONG! Vision works charged me a $40 dollar fitting fee that was supposed to be covered by my insurance and they wanted to charge me $40 per box of contacts. I tried to tell them that my insurance covers $105 towards contacts and that I only had a $10 copay for my eye exam. The woman who was helping me didn't listen and told me "your coverage probably changed". They made me pay $15 for the visit. I didn't even get the contacts. I got home and 2 hours later I called my insurance. They told me I should've gotten 4 boxes of contacts after my $25 copay; also, VISIONWORKS was only supposed to charged me $10 for my exam and that fitting fee was included in my $10 copay. I called back VISIONWORKS and the manager knew exactly who I was. She knew they had made a mistake and wanted me to give her my credit card info over the phone to correct the issue. Why didn't they call me immediately after they realized they made a mistake? If I hadn't called I would've paid out of pocket somewhere else for contacts. I drove back to the store and the manager corrected the issue but wasn't very apologetic about it. I asked if they were gonna call me, she said "well you beat me to it". It had been hours since they realized what had happened. I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

I contacted your store on 4000 N Oakland Ave, Milwaukee, WI where I had an exam in mid May. I was prescribed Bausch & Lomb Ultra contacts. When I called today, I requested a different brand of contacts. Ben basically said why should I help you "When you haven't been buying contacts from us". I have yet to order any contacts from anyone. I have mainly used my glasses, with occasional use of the pair of contacts I was given at the exam. "You have to have another exam", "It's past 45 days". I just want to say I will never use Visionworks again, and I will discontinue my daughters treatment at Visionworks as well. I am so furious. Make an appointment at your own risk. It is not uncommon to wait an hour after your scheduled time to see the Doctor. My advice, if you wear contacts set a reminder on your phone for a week before your year expires and stock up to avoid this mismanaged establishment. read more

Today I went to get my annual eye exam done here and it was a terrible experience. I went here for the first time last year and had an okay experience--I had to wait over an hour past my appointment time but I really liked the doctor, so I thought no big deal, wait times happen. Then when I ordered my contacts and found I was missing a box, the staff got irritated with me and refused to agree to my (what I thought was reasonable) request that they mail me the extra box when it arrived so I didn't have to drive back. They refused. Nevertheless, I still liked the doctor and made my appointment to go back again this year. When I arrived today, I walked in the door and all three of the staff were helping other customers. I stood around awkwardly for several minutes and not a single one of them acknowledged me in any way. After about 5 minutes, even after waiting patiently next to a desk where one of the staff was sitting with a customer and she didn't say a word to me, I gave up and just sat in the waiting area by the exam room. After 20 minutes had gone by, with still no help, the doctor came out of the room with another patient and I had to stop her to ask how to check in. She apologized and went to find my file. Well, it turns out that whoever I made the appointment with over the phone neglected to actually put me on the schedule so I don't have any appointment. The doctor was very kind and apologetic but told me she could not fit me in today (despite the large "walk-ins-welcome sign on the windows...). She was very nice and offered to reschedule me but by that point I was completely fed up with the terrible service and I left. It will be inconvenient, but I am getting my eye exam elsewhere. I went in for an eye exam at Visionworks about a month ago and today will be my third time having to go back just to pick up my prescription. I'm not sure why they wouldn't give me my prescription the day of but they wanted me to check back in a week or two to follow up with the trial contacts they gave me, which is fine but very inconvenient. Less than a week after wearing the contacts one ripped while I was at work and having been using them as a trial I did not have any back ups. If i'd had my prescription I could have sent somebody to go pick me up some contacts but when I called Visionworks to ask for my prescription they said I needed to come in to pick it up. Extremely annoying but fine - I made a follow up appointment to go in and tell the doctor the contacts were fine and pick up my prescription. During my second appointment I ordered a couple boxes of contacts through Visionworks which I later compared prices online - through Visionworks they were overpriced. I was also told they could not order me Dailies which is what I really wanted. I should have just picked up my prescription and ordered them myself online. After that I thought I was done dealing with them until today when I went to enter my prescription for some glasses I was ordering online I realized they never wrote down my glasses prescription. I was originally interested in glasses during my first visit but didn't like any of the frames they carried (there is a small selection for women). So now once again I will have to physically go in to pick up a prescription I should have gotten during my first visit like every other optical I've been to. I'm not sure why it's such a screw around just to get your prescription from a place you pay for an eye-exam and just because I did not wish to order frames from you does not mean I don't want my prescription. read more

Granted the place is busy. I can't fault them for that. I stopped in with my prescription and needed some new glasses. One of the employees did say they would get to me as soon as possible. I was waited on and picked out two pair - one for sunglasses and one pair to wear normally. I need progressive lenses. They were done in a week. I picked them up and had to leave town. The normal pair did not work well as the lens frame size was too small to use the progressive lens properly. The reading portion of the lens interfered with simple things like walking down steps. I returned after my trip and and looked up other reviews where people suggested the Visionworks guarantee could not be relied upon. I stopped in ready to be told there would be additional charges. I told them the problem and they said No Problem, pick out another pair and they would replace them. It was that easy! read more

I will never go back. Had my eye exam done there and I made a special trip because I was told to come in for a PD measurement, and when I got there Tarece, the manager, denied the simple measurement. I explained that I specifically asked about this before my exam because I knew I would be purchasing my frames and lenses online. I give 2 stars because I like Dr. Jurgens. I went in for my first visit in 2014 and was charged a ridiculous amount for frames and lenses. I was told I couldn't do the BOGO deal because I used my insurance. Uh, okay. I liked the glasses so didn't think anything of it. I ended up ordering a second pair from Warby Parker that I liked much more. Fast forward to now - I went back for another appointment because I wanted to update my lenses in the glasses from WP - so all I needed was an appointment with the doctor and an updated copy of my prescription. When I said this, I was told my insurance covered $120 for frames, so I picked out a $99 pair to have as a backup. When I was being rung up, the total magically came out to upwards of $250. I sat there and stared blankly at the person assisting me. She went back in the system and "somehow" got it down to $160. At that point I just wanted to leave, so I paid it. In the future, I'll go somewhere else that will simply give me the eye exam and my prescription as I requested. read more

This is the worst place you can go, I was looking new glasses because my old one broke and I did not had my old prescription with me, since I did it in they country I am from, so I schedule an eye test for a prescription for buy glasses. I go to the store because obviously something wrong with the prescription, and first of all they were very angry and started to be very dismissive, I asked for my pd since not wrote on the prescription and guess what they told me 55 this time, ah... Anyway re do same process with 3 websites, wrong again!!!! Go back to the store quite altered, and not only they started to mock me, but they even said that I was nut!! that I don't understand that 99% of glasses purchased on the internet come wrong!! After 1 hour of talk and telling them I will report to bbb, they agreed to give another eye test and to check the prescription from my old glasses that broke. Guess my old glasses prescription where completely different!!!! COMPLETELY!!! I went home ordered glasses ONLINE with my old prescription and THEY WERE PERFECT AT THE FIRST SHOT!!! Staff was friendly but they obviously cant handle being busy, as they seemed overwhelmed and unorganized. while I was in waiting room they had 3 people searching for a mans chart, that they could not find. He had just been there the day before. Now my issue. I came in for a contact lens exam and fitting. i did not care for the pair they gave me to try so i came back for my follow up and asked for a different brand. he switched me to another brand, i asked if i needed to come back again and he said not as long as they felt ok. All seemed good until i came back a couple months later requesting a copy of my prescription. I was told i could only have a copy of the rx with the original brand on it because i had not come back for a follow up. i explained to them the dr said i didnt need to come back. they couldnt verify that because the dr was no longer there. they would not change my prescription unless i payed an additional $40 for a new fitting, which i had already payed the first time. i refused to pay for something i had already payed for and shouldnt be asked to pay for again, so i ended up stuck with a presciption for a contact brand that i hated and couldnt use. will not be going back. read more

I live in Shorewood and like to shop locally. My experience with Vision Works was horrible and will not be using them in the future. I went in for an annual eye exam, as required, to update my perscription for contacts. My perscription changed and they were to order new trial contacts for me . They indicated that it could take 10 days to receive the trials and that they would contact me when they arrived. 10 days came and went, so I called and they had no idea why the contacts had not arrived. They provided no explaination and worse, nary an apology. Horrible customer service. Again, 10 days pass, I have to call again, the contacts are in, no explaination or apology as to why they didn't contact me. Furthermore, they made me feel as though I had done something wrong. (keep in mind, one can order contacts from 1-800-contacts and recieve them in 3 days!). I go back for my fitting and order a 6 month supply, they say it could take 10 days and they will call. 15 days go by, I call and they have not received the contacts yet, no explaination and no apology, again! They say they will look into it and call me back. I'm not holding my breath. Generally the staff is unprofessional, upkempt and act as if they are doing you a favor by being there. If I could give them no stars, I would. My fiancé and I went in because his frames were broken (the wire on the bottom of the lens snapped). So we go in and Jonathan takes the frames, takes the tape off, and when he finds out we didn't purchase them there, rather than offering to make an appointment or literally anything else that would be helpful, tries to take them in the back to tape them back together, where we hear the employees laughing about it. He then comes out, hands us the frames and some tape, and leaves. We went back and asked for a discount for being treated so terribly, the manager (over the phone, mysteriously she is never there) promised 30% off frames, and he made an appointment for today. Today, those morons claimed that they couldn't give him the discount because he didn't have a coupon. What coupon? They never gave us one or mentioned one before. They called the manager (because she's never at work) who told my fiancé that she never promised a 30% discount and couldn't do it for him. Last year I had an eye exam here, and everything was mostly fine. However, recently I ordered contacts from them. I went in to pick them up after I was told they were ready. They only had 2 boxes for what was supposed to be a six month supply. I asked if it was indeed a full 6 month supply and the employee said, "Umm, I would assume so." So I sat there unsatisfied with the answer, and he agreed to get someone else to take a look. The other employee told me that they needed two more boxes and one of the prescriptions was wrong. She offered me one box and asked me to sign the receipt. Since I didn't receive the complete order, I asked if I could sign for only part of it. She said that she could take the box back and I could sign when I got the whole order, so I chose that option. She did not apologize and seemed annoyed. I understand it was not personally her fault, but it would have been nice if someone apologized on behalf of Visionworks for a.) shorting my half my order b.) giving me the wrong prescription that I only discovered after I inquired.
