When my friend and I had our flight delayed from Sac and we finally landed in PDX we already knew we were going straight to Virtuous Pie for some vegan pizza. This is what happens when two vegans from Sacramento land in Portland's wonderland of vegan foodie options. We indulge! We made it there shortly before closing and ordered two pies (Super Funghi and Stranger Wings), garlic knots, and scoops of Salted Caramel & Chocolate Pretzel ice cream. I've been to Virtuous Pie in Vancouver's Chinatown, but this was a first time for me at the Portland location. The pizza was good (especially the spicy Stranger Wings, which I prefered) but felt that everything was a tad overcooked. The garlic knots were even slightly burnt. Maybe we caught them on an off night because they were close to closing, but knowing their pizza from Vancouver I can say I've had better from them. Personally I'd also prefer Sizzle Pie if I had to choose between the two vegan pizza places, but I'm definitely not opposed to coming back here for more. I'd also recommend trying out the ice cream, because the flavors are creative and ever-changing. #2VS

Came in on a Tuesday around 3pm and the place was quiet. I was excited to try Virtouos pies out and sat down to look things over before I decided since I was the only guest in there.. The pizza was just okay so I ordered a side of marinara sauce and hot honey to dip the slices in.. both were $2 each and a small ramekin size. And served cold.. cold sauces for my hot pizza? hmm.. okay.. I ordered the spinach and artichoke dip to dip my slices instead.. pretty good. I liked this the most. I wasn't super stoked on my lunch so I decided to try a couple desserts to make the lunch better.. they were just okay too.. the seasonal canoli was supposed to be apple pie but instead came with apple pie cream and no actual baked fruit.. The guy at the counter was slow with ordering and making my drink.. meh..

Had heard great things about this place and am looking forward to going back. We only stopped by for ice cream and homemade waffle cones this go round, but will definitely be back to try pizza, mac n cheese and other delicious goodies. We were kindly greeted upon walking in! We gave the Marionberry and Stawberry & Cream a shot. They were good flavors. Felt a bit overpriced for ice cream but it was still worth it. Looking forward to checking out additional menu items upon our return!

Pizza had almost no sauce and was burnt. The "pepperoni" was giant slabs of seitan. Got an Alfredo pasta that was $19 served in a tiny desert dish. Mod pizza makes a better vegan pizza at half the cost. Their ranch is good though. Never again. They also charged me $2 for 2oz side of marinara

AJ was amazing!! She took such good care of us and made the best recommendations. She made us feel welcome and at home. I am so glad we came here. Also - The pesto was SO GOOD.

Great great great!!! Vegan pizza here is da bomb! Cool space to hang and enjoy.... No animals were harmed ....

Portland Pizza Week is here! I tried two places today and it a fun discovering new pizza flavors. Don't miss out - the week is almost over! Here are some tips to make the most of it: 1 Explore nearby pizza spots and try different flavors. 2 Check out their special Pizza Week pies. 3 Note their open times as some places may have limited hours. 4 Vegetarians, fear not - there are plenty of veggie options available! 1. @virtuous_pie-Pepper Ann They had a really light and healthy taste, and the place itself was really cool, with an amazing dessert menu. It's a great spot for date night or hanging out with friends.

Blue Lavender Ice Cream

I had a hankering for ice cream so I can only comment on that. Everyone was super friendly, and the space had a chill, clean vibe. The blue lavender ice cream was delicious and super creamy. Decadently refreshing if that's something that's possible. I'm sure I'll have pizza here at some point but for now the ice cream is good enough!

We do takeout all the time and when I say this is the fastest service I am not lying. We had an estimated 30 minute wait and it was all ready in 7 minutes. Not only that but the food is absolutely fantastic. The service is incredible and the pizza is unbeatable. The pizza is always so satisfying and the mac and cheese is just a great comfort food. I have eaten at this location and the Vancouver and I can say they are also very consistent across locations. Nothing bad to say ever we love it here.

Pepper Ann Slice
Shane W.

We decided to try the pepper ann slice here for pizza week, and we didn't enjoy it very much. While there can be some leeway for vegan food lacking in flavor, this was far from acceptable. Every single component was below average in flavor. It was genuinely one of the worst slices we've ever eaten, worse than frozen pizza.

Garlic knots, mac and cheese and pizza!

The first time, we had a pepperoni pizza, a side of meatballs, and grape sorbetto. We liked the meatballs so much that, the second time, we had the Alley Kat pizza and, again, the grape sorbetto. The pizzas were both excellent--good crust with a great chew, good proportions for the toppings, and a cheese that tasted like cheese. (reductive? Maybe, but so much mozzarella is bland and rubbery that it seems worth mentioning.) The grape sorbetto was an excellent way to finish the meal both times: sweet, but not too sweet, and very bright to cleanse the palate.

Unfortunately, this was both our first and last visit. I don't think I've ever disliked a pizza before, but this may be the first one I would genuinely call bad. I enjoy wood-fired pizza and don't mind a little char, but somehow this pizza tasted noticeably bitter despite having very little visible charring. Whether it was the lack of sauce, the sauce itself being quite bland, or simply an imbalance of flavors, the end result just wasn't pleasant. The biggest issue is the value. A $25 cheese pizza doesn't need to be life-changing, but it should at least taste better than Costco's. In this case, unfortunately, it didn't. If your goal is to enjoy great pizza, I'd recommend one of the many other pizza spots in the area instead.

It's true NY style, thin enough to fold if you're walking, the perfect amount of oily, with only the freshest of mozzarella. Slices are available at the counter (and a few stools if you're just having a quick lunch) all day. For a whole pie, call ahead to schedule (503-22-SLICE has been their number since I moved here decades ago) and they'll give you a time generally 20-35 minutes in the future depending on how busy they are. Staff are just like NYC: no suck-up, extra sarcasm, and if you stand at the register for 5+ minutes fumbling with your wallet, they might make a snide comment. But it's endearing grouchy, not really mean, and it adds to the "flavor" of the whole place. Parking in NW 23 is usually very hard. For example, when the Arugula Salad is made well, it is fantastic. However we have had repeated experiences where the greens are not fresh, or the dressing is forgotten, or there is no cheese. We have had repeated issues specifically with takeout orders, over many years. Additionally, if you dine-in, there is an entire bottle of oil on the table that you are encouraged to use on your pizza. It is delicious, and really completes the pizza flavor profile! They used to automatically include two small containers of oil per pizza if you ordered to-go. Current policy appears to be to not include any oil with the pizza (unless explicitly asked) and to only provide a maximum of two oils (even if multiple pizzas are ordered). I don't know if there is an oil shortage or what, but this is silly for a place that charges so much for their pizza. Life of Pie is a typical Portland restaurant that expects you to tip before you receive your food (and also expects you to bus your own table). To me, this expectation alongside with the inconsistency of the food for the price, is disappointing, and does not encourage people to go out of their way to return. When the food is good it is a solid place, however I would expect much more consistency for the price they command.
