Firstly, the massage therapist wore gloves, which was odd, and didn't feel too nice. Secondly, she didn't focus on my head and neck as asked. She mainly did my upper back, and worked out knots in between my shoulder blades, which was painful. I know it's tense, it always will be from my job... when I want a Swedish, please stop trying to do a deep tissue. It hurts and it leave feeling angry because I wanted to relax, not feel pain. She also hardly did my scalp and neck at all, and that was the ONE place she didn't apply pressure. I'll continue my search for somewhere else.

I feel bad because the person who conducted the massage was very nice but was WOEFULLY inexperienced. I'll detail the problems I experienced with the hopes that the owner addresses them so future clients can enjoy a better massage. 1. Atmosphere: the room was bare with no relaxing elements. I had to request music during the massage to drown out the distracting conversations in the next room. Recommendation: have relaxing music and/or water elements playing as clients enter to facilitate relaxation. 2. Linen: the sheets were uncomfortably fuzzed and smelled of rancid massage oil. This was another distraction for me throughout the massage because I kept wondering if the linen was clean. Recommendation: better quality linen and detergent to remove oils. 3. Time: my appointment was for an hour massage, however the person ended 12 minutes before my hour (2:48 versus 3:00). That does not include the time it took to locate music. I felt that I was cheated of my scheduled time. Suggestion: Actual massage times should reflect what is advertised. 4. Massage quality: my appointment was for a deep tissue massage, however, I left feeling all I received was a body rub with oil. There was no deep pressure or relaxation with my massage, both of which I was really looking forward to receiving. I hope that the above situations and recommendations are considered, and changes made to present a more rewarding and professional experience for other clients. Massage is critical for my health, as I've got a disabling chronic illness that keeps me quite sedentary (and with a hyper-sensitive nervous system and low pain tolerance). I've had monthly massage as part of physical therapy, for years- but since March 2020 I hadn't had a single one. So I was in pretty bad shape when I first went to Kate. And by the end of my 60-minute session, my chronic pain was so far reduced by her skill, I almost wept with relief. She's not the cheapest massage therapist I've ever had- but she's by far the best, and worth every penny. Even days when I'm not in pain, I can feel the difference after her massage. And she varies her technique and focus based on how I'm feeling as well as her own expertise. Every massage with her has made a noticeable difference in my body, for the better. She's also very personable and calm, doesn't try to chat at me during the massage, and has created a calming, welcoming environment with her studio (from the electric fireplace to the music, to the warming massage table, the cleanliness of the space, the plants and crystals, etc.) Her cupping machine is interesting, and her massage lotion is great for my dry, sensitive skin. She's a very positive, kind person (as well as being observant) and clearly is continuing to develop her considerable skill. I'm so grateful she's practicing in Roanoke, and will continue to get regular massage from her for as long as she's here.

It was pleasant and freeing to remain clothed in my comfiest yoga pants & T-shirt, so that she could gently stretch and pull my limbs. She used her body to stretch, knead, compress, and lengthen mine. She used unique compression methods to ease my chronically tight quads and lower back. Once I arrived, I was still required to complete intake forms and was asked multiple times what areas I wanted worked on. I clearly stated I still a full body massage, but excluding only my head and glutes. Between filling out forms, getting undressed, and technical issues with the table, additional time was taken before the massage even began. However, none of this was communicated to me as time that would reduce my session. When the massage started, only my neck, shoulders, and back were worked on. The session ended shortly after, and I did not receive anywhere near a full body massage. I was confused and disappointed. When I brought this up, I was told it should have been a full body but then the receptionist switched up and stated it was because I was late. While I understand that arriving late can affect timing, I was never informed that my service would be shortened, nor was I given the option to adjust expectations or reschedule. It is misleading to ask a client what areas they want worked on--multiple times--if there is not enough time to perform the requested service. Additionally, I was told conflicting information about how late I was, and it was made clear that the next appointment was prioritized over completing the service I paid for. I have visited before and never experienced this issue, even when time was needed for forms and changing. This experience felt like poor communication and disappointing customer service. I paid for a 60-minute full body massage and did not receive what I paid for. I will not be returning and would not recommend this experience to others.
