On our road trip to Chicago, we figured we'd stop somewhere a bit more interesting than fast food for lunch. Enter Virginia Coney Island. We walked in and were instantly transported to the past. We snagged bar seating and ordered an Original VCI Coney Island ("A gently, steamed bun with a grilled hot dog covered in VCI Coney Sauce served with mustard and minced onions"). It's a terrific dog. The chili is far from what I expected, as it's basically just cooked ground beef, but when eaten with the mustard and onions (and tasty dog), the whole thing adds up to a filling and very satisfying concoction. The original, and in my opinion, the only Coney Island. This is real coney. Not a chili dog. If you want to get a chili dog ask for one, but don't call it a coney. The "coney sauce" is ground meat. There's no beans or tomato sauce in it. And a real coney comes with onions and mustard. If you have had a real coney, you will understand the obsession some people have with e with this place. It's because after 100 years of making coney dogs they have it down to a science. They're the same every time and they're perfect. I get 2 with everything. (3 if I'm hungry) and if I'm feeling extra good about myself I'll get some cheesy coney fries or some onion rings. read more

Ordered three coney kits 36 hot dogs in all. Two boxes of fries, one box of onion rings and an order of breaded mushrooms very large order. All ordered online with pick time. When I arrived food was not ready. After the food was ready and boxed I grabbed multiple bags and headed home. Upon arriving home I received a phone call they forgot to give me buns for the hot dogs. I went back and after arriving she pointed to a rack that my buns were sitting on. There was no apology or were sorry I grabbed my buns and left and will never ever ever return! Saw the reviews and spoke with the locals and this is where they told me to go for an authentic Jackson style coney. Soft bun, hotdog with a snap the right hit of mustard covered with finely chopped coney meat and a lot of finely cut onions. It's not a Lafayette coney or Flint. It has its own flare and was very good. Booth and bar seating. Interior is dated with a throw back diner atmosphere. Spunky servers and friendly staff. They have limited hours and do accept credit cards for payments. NO TIPS can be put on the card. CASH TIPS only. I even got one of their VCI coney kits to take home to the family. When visiting Michigan back in October I got to try Virginia Coney Island! A friend said their Coney Island hot dogs were a must try - and we weren't disappointed! The hot dog is topped with onions and a meat sauce that's seasoned well! I'm from West Virginia and use to a more chili type of sauce. This was pretty different from that, but still very good!! Coney's are terrible service was unbelievably slow. I would never come back place was filthy.

The coney islands did not taste like the previous owners, dried out and nasty. The french fries were hard and cooked too much and thrown in a brown bag and not wrapped up in paper like usual. All the grease was at the bottom of the bag. I will not ever go there again. For the amount of money tat was spent on a couple of coney islands and a french fry it shouldn't of tasted like that and I couldn't finish it. The whole meal was thrown away read more

Only meh. Love coney dogs. These are the loose style ground beef only with no sauce. The place kinda smells, the fountain Diet Coke smelled funny. The bathrooms you have to cut through the kitchen which was beyond disgusting. My advice. Use the bathrooms first before you order to see the kitchen and decide if you want to eat here. read more

Born and raised in Jackson then moved away, and I always catch heat for saying Virginia is my favorite coney. Honestly, head to head there is not a huge difference between here, Andy's, and JCI but for me the onions make all the difference. This place is fine. Nothing is really good, but nothing is actually bad either. The smallest burger they offer is stil 1/3 lb., which I find kind of gross. I never finish it, and although it tastes good, there's way too much meat. They also serve crinkle cut fries, which are the inferior fry- they never get very crispy. However, their menu is actually pretty impressive for one of these tiny diner places- usually it's burgers, coneys, and fries and that's it, but here there are actually a few other sandwiches and nachos and stuff! read more

I rolled up on Virginia's around 8:00 this past Friday evening. Ive lived 15 minutes away from the place for a while and had never tried it. I read lots of reviews ahead of time and had decided on two coneys with everything. The place has a distinct greasy-spoon feel, but not dirty. The place is there to serve dogs, not to impress people with its decor. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The dogs arrived very promptly and I was instantly taken aback. HOLY ONIONS! These dogs had diced onions stacked nearly a half inch thick across the top. No joke, it took three sticks of gum and two rounds of mouthwash to get neutralize the onion breath. Overall the dogs were decent. One of mine was a little burnt, but not enough to make a huge difference. Knowing what I know now, I'd definitely request light onions. Note: I found out the hard way that their credit card machine doesn't allow you to leave a tip. Bring cash. read more

Well I have to say that I was very disappointed with the coneys I got from Virginia Coney Island this past week. On our way to daughter's house in NW Indiana and picked up a dozen coneys as I've done several times before. Packed them in a container then into the cooler and off we went. ALL the dogs were overcooked/burnt on one side (the side facing down in the bun). They should have been thrown away. Certainly not the same quality coneys I've eaten for years. Unbelievable! Ended up throwing away 5 of the dozen myself. I guess my 2 star rating is probably overrated based on all the great dogs I've gotten in the past. Next time I'm going down the block. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. As an Out-of-towner visiting, I knew it was a special place when my then fiancée, and family recommended this place to meet up for Coneys. What the heck is a "Coney" you ask? It's a Michigan staple. It's a lifestyle. It's a hotdog, not just ANY hotdog either. A Coney Island hotdog (nicknamed Coney), is a skinnier hotdog on a warmed bun, with thin mustard, diced onion, and this amazingly non-greasy ground beef heart. Yup, heart. At least theoretically its heart. I digress, as I'm a "If you butcher it, use it all or nothing" kinda guy...hence I love Liver and Onions, which Virginia Coneys offers...but only if Georgie (aka B****, an inside joke to her closest of repeat customers and friends) isn't there. This place is definitely a spot you NEED to frequent, just for the ambience and gritty greasy spoon atmosphere. I love this place, and I used to loathe hotdogs! Yup, I guess I'm a convert. Oh, and this place is the only place I even remotely like mustard. Georgie and the gang REALLY make it the best though. However, when I stopped in on 7-29-2020 to order and take out coneys I was disappointed to see that though every employee wore a mask, every single one wore it under their chin. Not a single employee even covered their mouth with their mask. Thought I'd check the place out. Wish I hadn't. I was waited on by a woman wearing a large gold necklace that said, "BITCH". It went downhill from there. Inferior hot dog with no snap whatsoever. The meat spread across the dog was absolutely dry and tasteless, and the bun was not even steamed. The fries? Crinkle cut and cold. It actually took them 35 minutes to serve me a coney, fries and soft drink. My suggestion? Head about 100 feet west to Jackson Coney. These are the real deal. They have a menu board that may have been original with the building, but who are you kidding? GET THE CONEYS! World class rice pudding and good daily specials too. Small cafe with good, fast service. Nothing special. Old U-shaped kitchen surrounded by old tables and seats. They treat everyone like they're a regular. I ordered a coneys with cheese. Pretty standard coneys for the area, which is to say, they were really good. You can see right into the kitchen, which to me says they have nothing to hide. Fast, attentive service with good food. This place was recommended on the top 5 of Jackson. So we decided to check it out when we were visiting Jackson. It is really nothing to write home about. However the Cooneys are good and the hash and eggs are good as well. The reason for the 4 stars is it has very slow service so if you are dining in and in a hurry you might think twice about coming here. And once you get service the waitress seem to ignore you so if you want refills good luck. We came all the way from New Mexico to check this place out.
