Since moving here there have been all kinds of crazy top-tier drops: Cantillon, rarer 3F's, Fidens, Trillium, in addition to ongoing deliveries of highly rated beers (you're practically guaranteed to find a handful of beers rated 4.2+ on Untappd any time you walk in here). There's a good mix of local and non-local beers as well. I find it can be detrimental to focus TOO much on local beer. I also think they've nailed the size, both in terms of inventory and physical space, because product seems to move at an ideal pace. I've rarely come across too-old beer, which happens quite often in many beer shops. This is THE place to get beer in the area.

Now whether or not you feel that stores selling beer and wine are deserving of such a label, these are places that at the very least allowing us to indulge in some adult beverages while we hunker down and wait this thing out. Some days I would say that these choices are essential, (the importance is directly proportional to the number of kids that you are trying to home-school from what I have read.) and there are still celebrations and birthdays and anniversaries that are not subject to Covid-19, even if they may be altered from what the original vision was. So on this #thankfulthursday, I wanted to recognize De Fles Winkel, a small and unassuming beer and wine shop in the Twin Hickory area, that continues to provide excellent customer service, a strong community visibility, and a willingness to get their product out quickly to those who are currently unable to get it themselves. Now of course some other places are delivering beer and wine, but The Wink, as it is affectionately named, has a very small staff and due to their size cannot be a volume buyer of these items, and in turn sell their product at a lower price without being hurt by this practice. Still, they keep their prices very (almost unbelievably) competitive and their helpfulness is at an all-time high in direct contrast to most of these stores. In fact, their response to the crisis has been nothing short of amazing, as they have delivered my items on the same day each time I have placed an order (not something easily found these days, even from the big-box stores). You want youor drinks delivered cold? Just ask them. So cheers to The Wink, and here's to all of the small neighborhood business, like them, who are showing strong resiliency and higher levels of strength in a time when we need it the most. I will remember this when we are on the other side of all of this madness, and will make sure they continue to receive my business. At this point in my beer-drinking life I know I need to have my Untappd app out when making purchases because I've tried so many varieties. They didn't seem annoyed that I was analyzing each bottle before making any decisions. In fact, both guys working were super friendly, not invasive of my space, and offered great recommendations. I purchased a six-pack of a local raspberry sour to share, as well as a bottle from American Solera. Looking forward to both! Their selection is curated well and they also offer growler fills. When I walked in after their remodel, angels sang, a bright light came on and I spun around in circles smiling with happiness as I couldn't believe my eyes. Okay, that's a little dramatic but that's what happened in my head as I've never laid eyes on such a beautiful ABC store! I'm used to the boring aisles with bottles lined up, uncomfortable mirrors so the clerks make sure no one is stealing and pretty much no décor other than some random cardboard advertisements for liquor but NOT THIS PLACE! They had a beautiful set up of seasonal liquor displayed at the entrance. A tasting bar built in. A beautiful display of airplane bottles on one wall and actual décor on the walls that made me want to say "I'LL TAKE ONE OF EVERYTHING!". If that wasn't enough, a salesman asked if I needed help and when they couldn't locate a bottle of pumpkin liqueur that I needed, he called a location down the street and had them hold it for me.
