We visited the winery on Valentine's Day, which fell on a Saturday this year. We had made a…read morereservation in advance and arrived a bit early, but were seated right away. Tables are reserved for 2.5 hours, so I assume the party before us didn't use their full time. We ordered an appetizer and a bottle of wine. The brie cake was delicious--even for someone who doesn't usually like goat cheese (it was layered in)--but unfortunately, no one in our group enjoyed the cheesecake. The winery is both dog- and kid-friendly. All the parents we encountered kept their children supervised, which is a winery rule and one I really appreciate now that we have kids ourselves. Most of the dogs were also very well behaved, though one was repeatedly growling at passing dogs, which was off-putting. While the winery can't control every patron, we choose to leave our dog at home when she's not in a social mood, and it would be nice if all dog owners did the same.

TL;DR: PACKED when the weather is nice, expensive but great food and drinks, OK view…read more Ambiance (4/5): We arrived as a party of 4 on a Saturday and immediately walked into a live-action game of Musical Chairs: Patio Edition. Not a single table was available. Instead, there were rows of empty tables with RESERVED signs on them, apparently reserved for ghosts, because no one sat at them for 2+ hours. Meanwhile, groups of people, including us, circled the patio like vultures waiting for a table to finally open. The oyster pop-up bar had a line wrapping around the patio like people were waiting for Taylor Swift concert tickets instead of shellfish. There are small campfire setups around the outside area. But in 69°F full sun with a gentle breeze, you'd think no one would use them. Wrong. The whole side patio and hill area turned into a smoky campsite, with diners getting smoked out and leaving. On top of that, we had to fend off a rotating cast of unattended children. Kids wandered around like they were in an unsupervised theme park. One repeatedly tried sticking their hands in our dog's face while she was calmly chewing on a bone outside like a civilized creature. We ended up disciplining other people's children just so our dog could exist without being harassed. Food (4/5): We ordered the Nduja Sausage and Ricotta Pizza ($26), a red sangria pitcher ($40), a red sangria glass ($12), and the s'mores cookie tray ($10 for 3 cookies). The pizza was delicious, but the crust was so thin and flimsy it needed structural reinforcement. I used part of the previous slice to smear the ricotta around to get a balanced bite each time. The sangria was great, but $40 for 4 1/3 full glasses of wine felt disappointing. It's sangria, not liquid gold. The cookies were good, but for $10, 3 cookies should at least come with hot cocoa. Service (4/5): The lines were out the door. That is not the staff's fault. This place is popular, and the food is great. While I waited the 15 minute line to order, I reviewed the menu, dodged tiny children, and stepped away from random dogs on leashes inside the establishment trying to jump on me. It felt like a low-stakes obstacle course. When I got to the counter, I placed my order quickly. The bartender whipped the screen around with such precision and stared me down during the tip prompt like I was making a morally questionable decision. I pressed "No Tip" (listen. I stood in a line, picked up my own order, and bussed my own table) and his face shifted from "happy to help you" to "you have personally wronged me and my ancestors" in seconds. After tapping through 5+ different prompts, he told me to set a timer on my phone for 10 to 15 minutes and go to a different building to pick up my pizza. Finding this second building required me to use my nose like a bloodhound, following the faint scent of pizza through crowds until I finally tracked it down.

Beers were pretty decent. I really enjoyed the Toasted Lager, Helles and Irish Red -- I am a more traditional beer drinker. But they have a huge selection from dark and toasty to fruited to IPA. I think you would easily find at least one beer here that everyone in your party would enjoy! PLUS - food is pretty good. It's not gourmet, but it is a cut-above some other local breweries for sure. I wasn't overly hungry so I had the chicken and lemongrass potstickers, which were extremely tasty... really enjoyed :) The atmosphere is great and there are lots of tables inside and outside. I think you might need to reserve special outdoor seating around fire pits, etc., but there is a significant number of first come, first server tables as well. We were a part of 8 in the middle of the afternoon and had no issue finding a table on a sunny Saturday. Their outdoor area is expansive and family and pet friendly too. Be on a look out for their various events and vendors on their website to see what else to check out while you are enjoying the brews.

Brewery - 5stars Love the beer - 5stars…read moreAtmosphere - 5stars This poor review has Nothing to do with those things, it's the indoor entertainment that's the problem. No not the caliber of players, no not the music genre... it's the volume! Three times we've been with friends and the volume inside is almost an assault on the ears (.. and my wife says I'm hard of hearing!). We love, love, love live music. Local artists? Incredible! But, for the volume of the music to become the focus of the day, you'd best be The Rolling Stones! We may have come out to hear someone play, but most importantly we've visited to share good times with our friends, catch up, and laugh. The music should bring ambiance, NOT be the focus - for us its kinship, beer and socializing, which we cannot do with the volume of the music so loud. We will continued to visit Old 690 but will stay away if they have entertainment indoors.

The rustic decor and the live music really sets the scene. They offer so many beers and even have frozen drinks. I also like how they have expanded the food options and added food truck food. Old 690 is a great hidden gem that is s great stop to mix things up when touring wine country.

I love being able to experience Virginia wines while living in a different state and I love having my membership benefits when I do visit the area. The staff at Sunset Hills vineyard has always been welcoming, knowledgeable and hospitable. In addition, they are great with managing my shipments and account from afar and they make it easy to customize a shipment if you prefer different wines than they are offering. Their food service is great for pairing, I absolutely love their ciabatta bread and warm cheese spread with honey. My favorite thing to do is stop in, taste what is new and share a bottle and some snacks with friends while enjoying the views. We ended up getting a bottle to go as well since I enjoyed the wine. Lovely place for some good views and wine!
