Outdoor weddings at the gazebo are lovely and so are the indoor weddings in the chapel. The bridal suite is spacious and has and area dedicated to hair and make-up. If I were a bride, I would just soak it all up - take breakfast and eat on the balcony outside of the bridal suite, in the morning and enjoy every moment of my time there. I haven't even talked about the food yet... Lets just say, AMAZING! I've had Chicken Marsala, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia, Sirloin Tips (my personal fave) and that's just the entrees - the mashed potatoes. The roasted red potatoes, the steamed broccoli, the glazed carrots... There is nothing that I've eaten there that has been less than fantastic. They had an appetizer item at the last wedding I shot there that was so good I looked it up to pass it along because I wasn't sure of the name - it was the Rosemary and Parmesan Shortbread Crackers with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes and Feta Cheese the crackers were heart shaped and looked awesome on the tray. The ambient light from the chandeliers at night is stunning in the reception area and the natural window light flooding the room during the day is a photographer's dream! If you are looking for a classy, elegant, charming chapel or a floral picturesque outdoor wedding this is definitely worth your time checking it out. But I have definitely been around my fair share of event spaces. And Hawthorne House seems like a good one. There is a nice little chapel. It's crisp and clean and bright. Also, I appreciate that it's a "chapel" but it's not remotely religious. It's basic, to be sure, but I think there's a lot to be said for simplicity. My only complaint was that the acoustics here are ROUGH. Plan on adding some sound absorbing features if you want people to actually be able to hear what's going on. OR, ban loud, noisy children from attending. Seriously, I couldn't hear a single word of the ceremony because of a few irritating babies. You cross a nice little bridge through some trees, and then you're at the reception venue. I was quite impressed. The aesthetics match the chapel in that it's simple and clean. There are quite a few windows and the lighting is fancy without being overly ornate. The bar is completely adequate, and has room for 8 taps of beer, if that's your thing. Around the front of the house is a wraparound porch that just felt great to be on, as if you were at the house of some wealthy relative. And the front lawn is expansive with a pretty nice little gazebo. Not sure what you'd do there, but I'm sure it would fulfill your gazebo needs. My only complaint about the reception hall itself was the limited number of bathrooms. I can see with a larger event how there'd be a line for the facilities. The staff was all friendly and helpful, an stayed out of your way. The food was provided by the venue, and it was alright. It wasn't all totally to my liking, but that could be the menu the couple selected, or the cooks could have had an off night. But they kept the buffets filled and hot and did a good job otherwise. I can't say that I was OMG blown away by Hawthorne House, but I was certainly impressed. Any bride-to-be that chose this venue would be making a wise decision.

We arrived on the farm (after our Ford GPS took us a wonky route along a few miles of dirt road--so make sure you stay on paved roads and you won't have trouble--I was told by Kristin, our host and one of the owners, that Google Maps has no problem). I have to share our experience in detail because I feel we discovered a new must-visit experience in the KC area! We arrived at the 30-acre farm, parked in the field, and were greeted by our server who welcomed us warmly and offered us an arrival cocktail to sip while we explored the truly lovely grounds, pond, and nearby goats. After our leisurely stroll, we returned to the dining pavilion and found our seats at the gorgeous (and massive!) live-edge dining table along with a menu specifically for this weekend. Our gracious host Kristen and server brought out our first drink pairing, a minted lime seltzer that was refreshing and light. Our first course arrived--Blue Jade cornbread with arugula, sweet pea salad, and chicken liver paté. The cornbread was unlike any I had before and was absolutely delicious. The sweet pea salad was literally bursting with flavor the peas were so fresh and the chicken liver paté out of this world. Such an interesting flavor profile and combination. The next beverage pairing arrived a short time later as we enjoyed the perfect evening, a blackberry purple basil shrub. This drink was also delicious and refreshing (and save that blackberry for last--what a treat!). The Mangalista pig, we were told, is the "wagyu of pork" and the crisp, tasty, marbled pork chop was excellent. It was served with a beet "kimchi" with fennel root and a sheep cheese dumpling that was creamy and flavorful. Finally, our coffees were served and a dessert of yellow squash cake, lemon honey ice cream with mulberry compote was brought to us. Again, the dish was original, delicious, and a perfect ending to our meal. We can't wait to come back and have try a new menu in the future. I had to have it! The card said it was made at Sugar and Spice. I called them up and made an appointment for the following weekend. Jennifer is one of the owners and also responsible for making the cakes. She invited me to her shop in Parkville for a sampling of the cake. I'm no good with tasting wedding cakes simply because I love cake in all its glory, and it's hard for me to find one I don't like. Jennifer's cake was light and fluffy, and not overly sweet. Perfect for me! We sampled a couple of flavours (all very nice) and I settled on the plain white with buttercream frosting. The cake was reasonably priced (competitive if not less than most in the area) and the pricing included a silver cake tray for the table top. A $100 deposit was required and the remainder had to be paid in full by the day of the wedding. If the cake tray isn't returned, she keeps your deposit. Easy system! The cake was delivered right on time on the morning of the wedding. We had to order the flowers ourselves and have them ready to go. Jennifer set to work on decorating the cake with flowers and within 10 minutes it was finished and was every bit as beautiful as the photo from the bridal show. I got tons of compliments throughout the night on the great cake.

He enjoyed the kids library section. They have some neat in the wall seating for kids to read. They also have a large wooden ' café' for kids to play at. They had a good amount of books for children. The library was very busy on a Saturday later afternoon. I walked throughout the rest of the library to check it out and they have a good selection of books in the teens and adult areas. They also had a cooking room and also other meeting room rooms. It appeared to be a possible cooking lesson going on at the time we were there. They have a variety of comfortable and modern seating arrangements throughout the whole entire library. They also had a huge window area looking out on natural Prairie area that I believe might have hiking trails around it. We do not have library cards with this system so we didn't check anything out, but we did read books to our grandson while we were there. Everyone seemed to be getting good service from the librarians at the area as they were stationed. The library is a valuable resource for all the community members because of all the free resources that one can use. This library was new and modern. I do think the bathrooms could've been cleaned a little bit better or maybe more often.

We have a go-to photographer of our own, but really wanted a secular ceremony without all of the fuss. I didn't have to worry about a thing. Tell your guests where to go, when to show up, and they do the rest! You just get to show up and look pretty. Everyone was great about contacting us and they were able to play my music of choice at a reasonable volume.
