25-Nov-25: Whilst the older gentleman at the ordering counter was somewhat gruff, he was actually very helpful. The service was quick. My only concern: this was the first restaurant I have ever patronized, that did NOT have any type of hot sauce. That almost kept me from the high marks I gave this restaurant. I stopped in here for lunch, and while unfortunately they were out of the special that day, I had a very yummy plate of blue corn enchiladas with chicken, green chile, beans, posole, and sopapilla on the side. While the atmosphere is not particularly cozy, the meal was very inexpensive, quick, and very tasty. And while the portions were generous, I wasn't overwhelmed by the amount of food. It was a little confusing if I should order first or sit down, or wait for my food or have it delivered, or bus my own table, the staff was friendly and helpful, coming often to refill my glass and ask if everything was to my liking. Who likes boring cafeteria breakfast food? Viola's does! Nice people, gas station quality food. I must be missing something that these other reviewers got out of this place. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about it. Came to town on business, and this place got good reviews, so I passed on my hotel's free breakfast to come here. I am still scratching my head, wondering if I even went to the right spot. The sign said "Viola's" so unless there are 2 of them, this had to be it. Family owned and operated, this is a must in Los Alamos. Delicious New Mexican dishes. Whether it's breakfast or lunch the service is quick and courteous. The breakfast menu is my favorite and the lunch specials are the best in the area. My husband had seen online that Wednesdays were Indian fry bread taco days. Alas when we arrived, it was now Tuesdays. So honestly, we both started off very disappointed. After deciding we ended up with a hamburger and a chicken sandwich. The workers were friendly and the food was fine. Very typical diner style food. Had green chili cheese fries and the Navajo Taco special - taco fixings on fry bread, with fry bread and honey on the side. Solid and filling. This place really hit the spot. We went to Los Alamos to visit the birthplace of the atomic bomb. Viola's is located within walking distance of the Bradbury museum. I got the combination and my husband got the special (Friday). The food was excellent I love both the green and red sauces. The service was fast even though this place was really packed. This is a great place to eat, all of the food is delicious and the staff is genuinely friendly. Service is very quick, as you're eating in about 5 minutes from the time you order, no joke. You cannot beat the price and the portions fill me up and I'm over 300 pounds. So, I like to eat! I highly recommend the combination plate, X-Mas is my personal favorite; and the cheese burgers are top notch too! Really you can't go wrong with anything as it's all tasty and good. A+ read more

Wow! What a huge disappointment! I had positive feedback until Violas and its crew did my family wrong. No stars . Was not inviting. Gave my mom a bad time, because of her handicap. The ladies behind the counter laughing as she sat there in pain. The owner refused to discuss the situation with my brother. If you or a family member has a wheelchair, Do not eat here! By far the worst place I went to on my travels to Los Alamos. The place smells like bathroom cleaner, dirty, food was terrible and the waitress included in my review was the rudest ever. I got the blue corn enchiladas with ground beef. Hard grisly through out. Gag. Sopapillas (so) cold to touch and when we asked for fresh or warm ones the waitress said they are as warm as they come. I felt them and told her they were literally cold! Her response was she could throw them in the microwave. Whata jerk. Never go here! read more

This place is a local dive in an old KFC. However, you really can't beat the prices. It's pretty standard diner fare including New Mexican dishes. The thing I really like here is the green Chile, which you can buy by the quart to go. I recommend the smothered breakfast burrito of stopping at breakfast. read more

One star is not even good enough for this establishment. Not Handicap friendly, they treated my wheel chair bound mom horribly. We didn't even get to order our food. Ordered a green chili cheeseburger. It got there in less than 2 minutes. Was Lukewarm, cheese not melted, and chili had no bite. Fries were ok. pepper shaker had more bite than chili. Lettuce, tomato and pickles were displayed nicely. We were asked for a tip before being served. it appeared burger was premade. Only able to eat part of the meal. This place is unlike Los Alamos but really like New Mexico. Los Alamos has a different feel than other towns in NM. It isn't deeply rooted in the spanish culture because it has a different history. The people who have Viola's have New Mexican food down. I have every time but once gone here for breakfast. I order yes, the Huevos Rancheros - over easy eggs served on hot corn tortillas (they give you the option for flour tortilla) and smothered in whatever chile you prefer. I prefer both so I go xmas. On this review its for their Dallas Burrito for lunch. Same options just mix it up for lunch with meat, beans and cheese. I don't know which I like better, the red chile or green but it doesn't matter because I get both. SMOTHER it please. The service is impeccable, always asking to fill your drink and if you there is anything else you need. The price? - They are practically giving away the stuff. It is tasty and you gotta get there because I think they close at 2 pm. read more

From the outside Viola's isn't appealing. It looks like an old building and isn't inviting. It sure doesn't look like a happening place to eat. In fact, the inside doesn't look much different. It's similar to an old Burger King and brings a boring, bland feeling. Fortunately, the food is better than the decor. This place is a hidden gem, with friendly locals who cook and take orders. Having eaten at dozens of New Mexican style restaurants from Los Amamos, to Espanola, Taos, Sante Fe and many others, Viola's can hang with most, but might cost you less. There's a tremendous amount of value here and large portions that's go with it, which is kind of odd. Don't most places charge more and give you less now-a-days? Not here. You'll be impressed. Good luck finding better Green Chili Soup and Pozole. Those soups here are amazing and come in a bowl so large you won't be hungry enough to eat anything else, which is a shame because the burritos and red chili are awesome here! In fact, there isn't anything we did like or want to eat of neighboring tables plates. Viola's is a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch when cruising through Los Alamos. And, you came to this small town, why? Make a stop here and the trip will feel worth it. read more

We were passing through Los Alamos after visiting the Bandelier National Monument, which is a must see. Lucky I had done some research via Yelp on where to eat as after going through security checkpoints to enter the town we discovered there was no cell phone or Internet reception at all. Which we thought was strange for such a large busy city in the middle of nowhere. But we now understand after doing some research. We found a Viola's even with no GPS, and on entry it was full and had to wait five minutes, it had a real authentic New Mexican feel to it. I ordered the Dallas burrito with beef topped with green chili with beans. And we got the bean and cheese kids burrito for my four-year-old. My burrito was filled just with hamburger meat with not much flavor, the green chili was nice but not hot enough, and the beans were OK. My sons bean & cheese burrito wasn't that good, I have noticed authentic Mexican restaurants don't consider how hard it is for young children to eat sloppy burritos. The upside was that the service was very good and attentive, and it was cheap. If we were to visit any national parks nearby this place, we will be more likely to take a picnic to eat there and avoid this strange and bizarre city, which felt like we were in an episode of stranger things. read more

I know many people may not agree with me, but for me Viola's was only above average and not as delicious as all of the other reviewers make it out to be. I went for lunch and got the combo plate, which has two tacos, pozole, and a chicken enchilada - christmas chile. While the chile on top was quite good and flavorful, the actual food itself was not as high quality. The enchilada tortilla and the meat inside was quite bland, and the tacos tasted like ones you would get at Taco Bell - not bad, but it's still...Taco Bell. The pozole was actually pretty good though. The service wasn't very good either - although it was quite busy, I was there for about an hour and the waitress only came by once to refill my drink. I was definitely getting thirsty towards the end. I'm not a New Mexico native so my palate may not be as refined towards New Mexican food, but in terms of tacos and enchiladas I've had for a similar price (~$9 for my combo plate and drink), I've had better. read more

Diner atmosphere, the enchilada was amazing, and the sopapilla to end with was nice. The server was attentive and nice. The place was crowded but I got in and out quickly. I should follow up that I went back for the daily specials: Stuffed sopapilla, Navajo taco, and once again for the BCE... All fabulous. They will tell you the Navajo taco is like the stuffed sopapilla only with the filling on the outside. This might be the case, but I enjoy the stuffed sopapilla more. I've eaten at Viola's for years. This is a typical family-run operation that has a lot of regulars, but they don't take their regulars for granted. Their northern NM food is their forte' (try the combo with green chile!)...but they also have standards like good old fashioned cheeseburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches. This place is a jewel! Yes, the restaurant is located in an old KFC. Yes, they use to be located where the old Sparky's was by the old Center Theater. Yes, Sparky's made me sick a time or two... But Viola's biggest drawback is that it is not open for dinner. The food here is the basic Northern New Mexico fair. Enchiladas, burritos, tacos, Huevos Rancheros, etc. Nothing more and nothing less. The place is a dive. Note that the chile is where it need to be. Not that hot, but full of flavor. One of the best new-mex meals I have had, and prices/portions are very generous. I had the blue corn cheese enchiladas with green chile and loved them. I am usually not a huge fan of Pozole but I really liked theirs. Beans were also tasty and who doesn't like having a sopapilla included in the price? It was a lot for $8.
