They were a bit stiffer than my personal preference, but well-made overall and I won't hold the extra booze against them! The Guinness came in a true pint glass and drank smooth with a nice moderate malt flavor, even if it wasn't the creamiest pour I've ever had. The bar is well-decorated and has a cozy atmosphere, but the music was wayyy too loud - so loud that my friends and I could barely hear each other, the servers couldn't hear us, and we couldn't hear them. It would be one thing if it was 8 PM or later, but at 5 PM on a weekday it was just too much. I asked if they could turn down the music and one server said she'd ask her manager, but never followed up. At one point it got so bad that our ears hurt and we decided we'd ask to be seated outside, but they informed us there was only one table outside that could seat 3-4 and it had just been taken (though they said we could move to the drink railing seating). They did turn down the music a tad, but because of the sound mixing, it didn't make that much of a difference depending on the song (base-heavy songs really came through). As for the food...unfortunately disappointing. We ordered the mozzarella sticks, crab & artichoke dip, a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of onion rings, and a brownie sundae. The mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce were fine. The crab & artichoke dip did have a fair amount of crab, and they do bring you extra fried saltines if they notice you've run low, but definitely needed more flavor (they give you ketchup and hot sauce before you order, which was nice). I noticed another table had old bay so I requested that as well, and it helped. The grilled cheese was fine. The onion rings were good, as was their special sauce. I'm really disappointed in the sundae - the description is as follows: "A brownie we put our whole hearts into. HOT FUDGE, house-made whippped cream (brownie served warm of course) & vanilla ice cream." While it was delicious (it would be a feat to mess up a brownie sundae), they used a big glass dish and a ton of whipped cream to cover up a very small brownie and a tiny scoop of ice cream. At $14 I hoped for so much more (literally and figuratively). The cherry on top (pun intended) was that the service was meh. While I don't expect everyone to be cheerful and bubbly, I was a little uncomfortable with the lack of hospitality.

I came on a Saturday night for à la carte drinks after dinner. Reservations will certainly help if you've got your heart set on coming here or want the tasting menu. I actually had intended on trying this spot when I was in town a few months ago but had to cancel due to work commitments. Their cancellation policy is kind of annoying to me - you still have to pay the deposit unless it's greater than a week's notice. I feel like industry standard is 48 or 24 hours, and it was annoying to have to pay $50 when I cancelled 5 days in advance. I did three drinks à la carte (was curious about the tasting menu but that was more drinks than I could reasonably handle.) I opted for: 1. Eilxir of Long Life: gin, clarified green chartreuse, maraschino, clarified lime. Basically a clarified last word. Very cool technique but this was way, way, WAY too sweet. It took all the nuance out of the cool drink technique. 2. 2 Stops to Montilla: genever, amontillado, höjicha, sesame oil, lavender bitters. My favorite of the night though I found the gold leaf gimmicky and it messed up my lipstick/got all over my mouth. This was really awesome taste-wise, still a bit sweet for me but doable. 3. Big in Japan: japanese whiskey, dry vermouth, salers, drambuie, wakamomo. Their version of a dry manhattan. This was good but nothing that knocked me out of the park. Loved the wakamomo though. Ultimately I really expected more of a cocktail bar my friends raved about as the best in DC. Was it better than your average craft cocktail bar? Yes. And the service was Michelin-level, super friendly, approachable, helpful without overdoing it. The truffle grilled cheese was also awesome, a must order. Maybe the cocktail flight would have been more to my liking? They are doing cool things here (I enjoyed watching them make a set of cocktails with liquid nitrogen for the pairing) but the overall taste of cocktails consistently fell under fancy cocktail bars I've had when I travel. Amtrak Vacations developed an itinerary that would take me from Union Station to Chicago, then to Seattle, then to Vancouver, Jasper, and Banff. Over the next few years visitors will see many changes in the station, affecting where and how passengers wait for their train. The changes include a dedicated waiting area for Amtrak ticket holders and a Metropolitan Lounge for sleeper-car passengers. The station features Wolfgang Puck on the second floor, Chopt and Chipotle among others in the food court below the main floor, and a reliable McDonald's near the departure gates. I walked up one flight of non-operational escalators near Pret A Manger late one weekday morning. Mary-Jane was an attentive bar tender. While waiting for the Amtrak Floridian due to depart at 3:57 pm. I ordered a G&T Bombay Sapphire ($16) and decided against the beef sliders ($15) in favor of a double at McDonald's downstairs. Union Station is always evolving, and Wolfgang Puck is a good indicator that travelers are looking for well-crafted menu and bar items.

The outside was crispy, and I really enjoyed the hint of passionfruit throughout. The drinks were also good, as they're what they're known for. I'm not an expert on alcohol, so all I can say is that I enjoyed them.
