But when I recently cracked a tooth and began experiencing pain, I knew it would only get worse. My wife encouraged me to finally face my fear and use the extraction as an opportunity to get back to regular dental visits. Having just enrolled in new insurance, I searched the provider directory and chose Kowalski Dental cause I liked the name. I called and explained to the receptionist that I would soon be traveling for work, and the team graciously squeezed me in the very next morning. As a tech guy, I was extremely impressed by the efficient new-patient intake process. All the forms and consent documents arrived by text, allowing me to complete everything online before my appointment. When I arrived at the Beverly office, I noticed immediately before I even walked through the door that everyone seemed to be having a genuinely good day. The staff members were smiling and laughing, and I was welcomed warmly. The appointment I had been dreading was already off to a good start. The office was also absolutely spotless and when I got to the room to be seen I noticed right away that dental tech had changed so much since the last time I had been. After my X-rays, Dr. Kowalski evaluated the cracked tooth and carefully reviewed the images for any other potential concerns. He clearly explained everything he saw and what needed to be done right away. I reluctantly agreed to have the cracked molar, which also had an abscess, extracted. Thanks to plenty of Novocain, I didn't feel a thing during the short procedure. The entire experience was fantastic. Dr. Kowalski and his team were friendly, professional, and reassuring throughout my visit. I've already scheduled a full cleaning and evaluation for next week, and I'm genuinely looking forward to working with them to restore my dental health. The patient is responsible for insurance nonpayment, not them. I have had a very unpleasant experience with Varinos Dental Associates of Watertown. I did not want to go there at first because they were out of my network, but the office manager told me that my insurance will cover cleaning fully anyway, so I came for cleaning. They did their job and have scheduled next appointment for the cleaning. I came in for the next appointment and shortly thereafter I receive a bill for $160. I have called them to find out what is going on and the office manager explained that my insurance wouldn't cover it because the second appointment was scheduled only in five months after the first one and my insurance covers dental cleaning every six months. I have asked the office manager why would they schedule an appointment without telling me that my insurance covers only once in 6 months and I will have to pay full price? If I'd be asked if I want to do my cleaning in six months for free or I would prefer to do it in five months for $160, I would not think twice to choose free. They told me it was my responsibility to pay if the insurance doesn't pay and it is my responsibility to check with my insurance company the coverage. Here is the problem I have: While it is true that no one can guarantee that insurance will pay a claim, there are situations when it is undoubtedly clear that insurance will NOT pay the claim, like this one. Any dental office knows that many insurance companies cover cleaning only once every 6 months and it is a good business practice and common sense to check and warn your client about financial responsibility if there is a need for scheduling earlier cleaning appointment. Another good business practice and common sense would be to tell your client that it is his/her responsibility to check with the insurance. And the last point here to tell the service price. I would gladly pay if for whatever reason a legit claim, which had a good chance to be accepted and paid would be denied in full or partially by my insurance company - it happens, but not when the claim had no chance. I feel I was fooled by thinking the cleaning will be free, trusted the dentist to set an appointment, but neglected to be warned on an obvious in their practice red flag and finally was made responsible for an arbitrary amount at the end. And by the way, the amount we never discussed and, in addition, is higher than if they charge my insurance. I have been talking to the office manager for half an hour - no luck, she keeps repeating as a mantra: "it is your responsibility to check with your insurance company" and all they offer is to pay the full amount in full or over few month.
