Have changed to Kowalski Dental following my former dentist's retirement. From an early childhood experience, I do not like dentists, and I have had a few. The first thing I noticed was how quiet , clean and how pleasant and helpful the office staff was. I was given a lovely young dentist and realized it was a young lady my son graduated high school with. Now if I will let a"kid" work on me , you must realize I was confident with Dr Dawna. She is gentle and knowledgeable. She and the office see that you are seen asap. and every thing is always explained. I would highly recommend the the practice. They are knowledgeable, positive and make things a lot easier for a nervous patient. read more

The dental assistant, Kristina was extremely rude and condescending. Dr was rushed running from my room to the next. Told the dental assistant Kristina my crown felt too tight. She would t bring the doctor back in and said "he put the floss through it" crown made on site and overlaps my gums in one spot which aggravates it. When I made another appointment to have this addressed I was kept at work for forced OT called to cancel and received a letter telling me I was welcome back. I came here to get a crown by Dr Sheridan (a female to be precise) and she was awful. She didn't do my first Novacaine shot correctly and needed to do it a second time. If you can't do that correctly you should be a dental assistant. They went to make my crown and once they put it in my mouth it broke... which she said wasn't possible after I expressed I just heard something snap. On top of that ever since this woman touched my mouth it has been in pain I've never experienced before. I'm convinced she did nerve damage and I'm truly upset I let her anywhere near my mouth. Go somewhere else!! Or ask for a different doctor because this woman shouldn't be in considered a dental doctor. If I could leave 0 stars I would. read more

Office staff is wonderful . Hygienists are wonderful . Dr Kowalski was rude , gruff and condescending when I had some issues after having an extraction that he misdiagnosed a month earlier . It's ok to take my money for more exrays and exams but cannot give me any respect when I am in pain . No thank you ! I will give my money to someone else . My family has been going to Kowalski Dental for over 7 yrs. They are professional and treat each patient's needs and concerns with compassion. When I have my 6 month dental cleanings, the hygienist is always asking if "I'm doing okay?" I have referred my friends to this practice, and they are pleased with personal results, too! Awful, entry-level dentist needed to refill a filling in a tiny cavity which resulted in me needing a root canal a week later.

I filled out the online forms and submitted them then I was seen the next day. I let them know my gums were discolored and I most likely had some serious periodontal problems. Towards the end of my appointment (x-rays and poking around) periodontal disease was confirmed and the steps they wanted to take started with a 'deep cleaning' done over 2 sessions. I scheduled the deep cleaning but the appointments weren't until later this month but they said they could put me on the wait list in case something came up. They had cancellations within the week and called me to see if I wanted to take them. I did. It is 3 weeks since my initial visit/consultation and everything is great. The deep cleaning to remove calculus - my gums no longer bleed when brushing, they are no longer swollen or discolored. I go tomorrow for a filling then I should be good for 3 months. So glad I went. I was a little worried after reading the reviews. Google reviews showed complaints regarding constant emails and text message spamming. I got a text the day after my first appointment. Within the text it said to reply with only the word STOP to cancel them. I did this and it worked. With the emails, I just clicked the link to unsubscribe. All good, no more email or texts. I think this is a non issue. This place is the real deal! read more

Update to my review a few years ago.....still terrible.... my son got a crown at Kowalski Dental a few years ago but since they did it wrong......didn't put it on the right way, he now needs a new crown and a root canal. Great place to go if you want the staff to make fun of you. Ha ha ha. Not. I was terrorized at the dentist as a child and I have the teeth to prove it. So I put off calling for as long as I stand it, and then finally call to make an appointment -- and you have a big laugh at my expense for waiting. Not helping - and not booked either. Second time this has happened here. I can wait longer. Not the first time I found a good dentist with terrible staff. 11/07/2017: Just thought to do this update.... later in the summer I finally called again because of a chip in a filling. They refused to let me see the dentist until I did the super sized cleaning they'd recommended. I booked it, and then they still refused to book me with the dentist until after the cleaning. And they refused to let me speak to the dentist or ask her to call me and they refused to speak with her and call me back. So, I wrote her a letter. Yes, paper, envelope stamp. And I never heard from her or anyone else, so I'm done, done, done. read more

By far the WORST and most unprofessional experience I've EVER had! Dr. Kowalski was rude, disrespectful and aggressive throughout the whole appointment. Do not go here! All they care about is money! I have a cracked tooth and was told it's a 5000k repair. I've been saving to afford to get it fixed. I called them on a Saturday of a holiday weekend telling them I have an infection as the side of my face is swollen and I need an antibiotic. They said no we won't give you meds until we see you. Um, hello, you can't see me because it's a holiday weekend so I'm supposed to suffer. Receptionist was extremely rude. They just lost my and my 2 children's business. New bad review...this dental office goes BEYOND BAD. I requested latest xrays to bring to new dentist. Release signed and they were miffed we wanted them sent to us. It is none of their business where we are going. well...xrays never sent. called. they lied and said they sent them. weird that all emails regarding appt, etc came without a problem except the xrays. supposedly resent them today. nope....still have not received them. I gave never heard of such an inept vindictive office. I plan on reporting them again to the dental board for refusing to send the xrays. read more

I have never had issues with Dr. Kowalski's office, and they have fixed a few fillings that were crappily done a few years back. Additionally... What I love about this dental office is that they make sure you follow through with your grown-up obligation to responsibly care for your teeth. My job makes scheduling appointments a little tough, but they always find a way to make my regular cleaning happen (open on saturdays!) I had to cancel a cleaning back in June and forgot/did not prioritize rescheduling an appointment, so the office called a few times to schedule it, then emailed and texted (twice) to confirm and remind me of my appointment. I LOVE it. Its like they own the fact that nobody likes going to the dentist and don't expect you to actively pursue an appointment. read more

From my experience here I can tell you that this place does not care about your oral health at all. I have revisited this place a few times with issues of swelling on the gum line and the teeth involved. Dawna will throw antibiotics at you, oral rinses, and even literally pick at the problem with a tool but will not come up with a solution or even an outside or alternative recommendation for someone who is more specialized in identifying the problem at hand. She will just let your health rot and get worse. I did listen to her for months at first and gave her the time and visits to what she told me to do. Do not fall for this place. I had a serious infection that another specialist had found and caught on time and cured before things got worse. This place is just money hungry and it's seems to be all that they are concerned with and NOT YOUR HEALTH with costly repeated visits and get nothing done to solve the problem! To the Kowalski dental team. You really must apologize, refund and reimburse all the customers you may have screwed over that are also listed in this review section and on the Groveland address review. I have terrible teeth and developed an upper toothache that reached into my ear and eye causing me to go to the ER. They blocked the nerve with lidocaine, gave me some antibiotics, sent me home, and I was back screaming as soon as the lidocaine wore off. It turns out I'd eaten so much ibuprofen I'd damaged my kidneys and after a CAT scan they diagnosed a horrible infection, cellulitis, and mandibular erosion. They put me on IV antibiotics and THREE DAYS LATER THE HOSPITAL LET ME GO. I actually spent 3 days in Beverly Hospital for a toothache! I went in to see Dr. Dietrich the next morning and she did x-rays but didn't have enough time to do the extractions right then, which they'd told me to expect. It turned out that Dr. Dawna Kowalski did have time, however. She decided four of them had to come out, which also didn't surprise me, and she immediately got started. Getting four teeth in a row pulled all at once sucks just a much as you think it would, but the dentist was nice enough. Competent, very supportive, explained everything as she went, and it all moved along quickly, mostly painlessly, and without problems. The pain pills last about 8 hours and after about 2 days I really didn't need them. I'm tender now, but back in the saddle. If you have to see a dentist you have my heartfelt sympathy, but this one is as good as you're likely to find. I recommend them. read more

Surprised to see a few negative reviews, so decided to share my experience with the Kowalski practice. Professional, friendly, comfortable and prompt. As Amy mentioned, I really appreciated the technology in the office - it was great being able to view my X-rays on the screen right in front of me as I'm in the chair. I've had the same hygienist for both appointments, and she was nothing but professional, friendly and thorough - she remembered me from my first visit 6 months ago. Dr. Dawna K. was friendly, accessible, professional and thorough afterward - very cool. All of this was on an end-of-the-day Friday appointment, which did not go unnoticed. When scheduling my next appointment, the hygienist pulled up my dental insurance plan right on the consult screen in the room and verified that my insurance would cover the next appointment regardless of the date of service (the whole 2/year vs. 1 every 6 months) - thoughtful. I really appreciated that. I was referred to their practice by Dr. Kiva Skolnick, who had a small friendly/family practice in Beverly. He sadly retired a couple years ago, and I couldn't be happier with my experience thus far with the Kowalskis. Na zdrowie! Thumbs up. read more

This place sucks. I got a cleaning done and it lasted a total of 60 seconds at the most. I got some xrays done and long story short they told me I needed to come back for a tooth extraction because they couldn't save my broken tooth. I had never gotten a tooth pulled before so I was beyond scared. I went back to have my tooth pulled and it was the WORST experience. The oral surgeon wasn't very nice. In fact she was almost rude. She had given me nova cane but I could still feel the pain when she started. She got aggravated pretty quickly and insisted that I come back a different day when I'm more "ready" ... I asked her if she could be more gentle because it seemed to me like she was just tearing my mouth apart. In the end she had broken the tooth while attempting to extract it, so she had to then take it out in pieces. My eyes were tearing up because I could feel it. She yelled at me for "touching her hand" When all I really wanted was a little bit of comfort ..,.in the end she successfully extracted the tooth , however the two teeth next to the one she pulled , were now broken.... but of course it's " not her fault " Maybe if she wasn't so harsh , idk... but I started going to dr dental instead and they are much nicer and got me a referral to another oral surgeon who was much nicer and even gave me the option to use anesthesia. He didn't leave me with any broken teeth either ;) never again will I come back or refer anyone to this place ! BEWARE!!!!! read more

I chipped my front bonded tooth, yikes. I had my bonding redone about a month ago (sorry I forgot her name), she was friendly and matched me perfectly. I'm glad she's working for you guys! Up until recently, I was fairly satisfied with Dr. Dawna Kowalski. However, without consulting me she put a silver filling in my crown. Why, I'm not sure. Prior to my former dentist retiring, I had all the silver fillings in my mouth replaced with tooth-colored fillings. When I went to the endodontist, she put in a temporary filling that was tooth-colored. So, why Dr. Dawna Kowalski decided to put in a permanent silver filling baffles me. I called the office twice last week expressing my concerns and wanted to know why she did this. No one ever got back to me and it's been over a week. Silver fillings are antiquated. Therefore, I will not return to this practice, nor will I refer anyone there. read more

EXTREMELY unprofessional. I was getting a filling filled there, and Dawna got a phone call and literally answered it while she was drilling my face. Also, something happened with her receptionist and she started yelling at the receptionist also while she was drilling my tooth. I would never recommend anyone to go there. Ugh! What a nightmare this place is! Where do I start.... - I got to the office and they couldn't find me in the system. They then asked me how I was related to John Smith (I don't recall the actual name). I said I'm not and I have no idea who that is. They then say "oh... We have you under the Smith family in our system. You're not related to them at all?" Nope.... I'm not. Glad this was my first (and last) visit with them because who knows what personal information they may have sent of mine to this random family. - I get called in the back. The hygienist was nice and the office is nice. These are the only two good things of this place. - Dr Dawna walks in. Not a Hello, I'm Dr Dawna, nice to meet you, etc. Any other normal dentist does that, especially when you're a new patient that's never met them. But nope, not Dawna. She just walks in and sits down. She checks my teeth, etc. Then she says she wants to fill one tooth because she "doesn't like the way it looks" although the X-rays show nothing and it's not "sticky" like a cavity would be. (If she had asked for my previous dental records, she would know I've always had "dark groovy teeth".) I then asked her if it would be possible to put extra bonding on my permanent retainer because it broke off of one tooth and my teeth were starting to shift after spending thousands of dollars on braces and my orthodontist is out of state. She says "No, it'll help when you floss anyway". Gee thanks.... Needless to say, I never returned here. Recently I've found a new dentist that keeps my information in order (not under another family), that shook my hand and introduced himself when I went in for my new patient exam and still is very nice every time I return, asked about my past dental history instead of just assuming, and gladly put new bonding on my retainer so I wouldn't have to worry about my teeth shifting. How a dentist SHOULD be. Never recommending Kowalski Dental to anyone!! *Update: I had to post a follow up after I noticed that "Dawna" replied. I find it hilarious that she claims to have never met me. If she had looked in their records she would have noticed I was a patient there and SHE was the one that saw me. She might also have seen where the office had somehow added me to another family, which may NOT have made them HIPAA compliant if they sent any type of mailings or statements. That is until I told them I did not know the other patients that I was apparently linked to in their system. Anyway, this place scared me away from the dentist that I didn't go back for 2 years. When I did go back to a new dentist, they did in fact inform me that I needed a filling, however it was not the tooth that "concerned" Dawna. They said that one was completely fine and still is. Hmmm interesting. Anyway, just wanted to submit an update after seeing Dawna's reply. Any dentist that will deny ever seeing a patient who leaves a negative review is obviously not one to go to. read more

after some HORRIBLE dentist experiences in the boston area (see my other reviews), upon moving to beverly i needed to find a dentist because it had been about 1.5 years since i had a cleaning. on my walk to the commuter rail each morning, i walk past dr. kowalski's office, so i decided to give it a shot. the parking lot is always full (at 8am!), so i figure if this many people come here, i'll be okay. at my first appointment, i had some xrays done, and then the hygenist magically pulled them up on a computer, with a screen right in front of me! i had never experienced this before, and it was awesome. she walked me thru the xrays and showed me the areas of tarter that had built up over the last 1.5 years. did the whole gum check thing (never had that before either, where they see if your gums are receding) and gave me a fantastic cleaning. everything else was great, and the hygenist was super friendly and wonderful. i've since been back for my 6 month cleaning, and had the same hygenist. she said that my mouth was looking so much better (since i've been flossing more, although still not enough), and again i had a great cleaning. great dental office, and i hope to not have to leave this practice for a long time! read more

I just had my first dental visit there the other day. A cleaning with Kim, excellent job! Friendly lady, fairly fast given that I kept interrupting her and that I've not had a cleaning in....well....waaayyy longer than one should wait between cleanings (grin)....and it didn't hurt! I was very nervous and not looking forward to the visit at all, and it was so much better than I was expecting! The office staff is very pleasant too and the waiting room is not in the least cold or office like, it feels more like someone's comfy living room to me, which is quite calming if you are nervous about going to the dentist. :) read more

I have been coming here since I was 5 years old and keep coming back. Everyone there is super nice, and his daughter is a dentist there now too. I had a filling that i was picky about and they fixed it for me twice no questions asked. I also noticed the girl who gave them a terrible review also reviewed every strip club in the area so if that doesn't speak for her character, I don't know what does. Anyway, I have never had a bad dental experience there, and never had a fear of the dentist because of him. I recommend people to them all the time. read more

I was nervous to see a dentist. My beautiful and perfect teeth were not perfect anymore. Far from it. Unfortunately, an experience with my previous dentist left me with a phobia. I had been putting off seeing a dentist ever since. This was a big mistake, and I was in desperate need to find a new dentist who would help me. I came to Kowalski Dental, literally in tears because of my anxiety, and it was the best decision I have ever made. On my first visit they assured me that they'd make my smile beautiful again, and they meant it. If you are ashamed of the shape of your teeth, or if you have a fear of seeing a dentist, this is the place you need to go. The team here is amazing. They put me at ease, have supported me during the dental work I need, and they genuinely care about their patients. My confidence is coming back and my dental phobia is gone! I highly recommend seeing one of the dentists here. They are all fantastic and I can't thank them enough for making me smile again! :) read more

I have to tell you that my family and I have had Dr. Kowalski as a dentist for 25 years. He is a fabulous dentist, fair prices, gets the work done quickly, does not do work he doesn't have to do, and I had to remark on his work because of the other unfair reviews that have seen posted here. Our family lived in Beverly and then moved to Kentucky for 8 years, but when we came back and decided to live in Gloucester, we decided we needed to go back to his practice because we had horrible experience with other dentists. I'm really starting to dislike this place. The ladies at the front desk are usually very nice and helpful. I was there yesterday and have never left so disappointed. I checked in for my 5:15 appointment but didn't get taken in to be seen until 5:35. A whole 20 minute wait! I have never had this happen. Yes I did get an apology, but to be honest I was ready to walk out and not even bother to be seen after waiting for so long. In fact, the lady who checked in AFTER me got seen first. Does that make any sense? The hygienist hardly talked to me. She also said that someone had put into the computer that I had thyroid problems, even though I don't. Mystery to me. After my cleaning was done, the hygienist scheduled my appointment and than began cleaning up. She had then pulled out a notebook and started writing something down, completely ignoring me sitting in the chair right next to me. She could've at least mentioned that we were waiting on the doctor to come and take a look, but nothing and kept giggling to herself. Oh well. I would change dentists but I like the convenience of it being in Beverly and the late hours they have. read more

First of all, I would like to start this review by saying that I don't really ever write reviews but I felt like in this case it is a MUST. The office staff at Kowalski is very nice and professional, they were helpful with making/changing appointments and were very attentive. I had a good experience with the hygienist, he had a great sense of humor and gave me some great tips on brushing and flossing. That said-- when I was told I had a couple of cavities I needed to get filled, I let them know right from the start that I am a nervous patient when it comes to drilling. This was no secret. I had Dawna as my dentist for all the procedures and the first two were alright (nothing to write home about) but the last one was a disaster. Although she numbed me up pretty good I was still having sensitivity and she decided after the third attempt on drilling me to use a "block" as my anesthesia. When she went to inject me, she stabbed me in the lip with the needle and didn't say anything after I jumped from pain and just went ahead and gave me the injection. She then handed me a gauze and said "here, this is for your lip it's bleeding where I stabbed it" She didn't even have the decency to apologize for what she did! At this point I am frustrated and tearing up from the whole experience. She ignores the fact that I'm upset and just walks out of the room to let the novocaine take effect. She then comes back and brusquely finishes the work and has zero sympathy for a patient having a hard time on her chair. The lack of sensitivity on her part shows that she is only there to do her mediocre job and not a single care that there is a person sitting there that might require a little more attention. It took an hour to get one cavity filled. NEVER going back to this place, it was a horrible experience. I am a nurse and I would never leave a patient in pain and in tears after I injured them. Go somewhere else, there are plenty of other places around the area. Regarding the response below... Let me clarify that I am not contradicting myself--- it took an hour because she would numb me up, come back in 10 minutes, do something rushed, and then leave me again (x3). She spent very little face to face time with me and would just leave the room for extended periods of time to treat other patients. I couldn't wait to get out of there! read more

Terrible dental work. Put a crown on so poorly it cracked within days. When the crown for my front tooth was made wrong and was too big for the space, he just forced it in and cemented it. It screwed up the adjacent teeth and created a mess. Stay away. read more

I'd really like to give this office a better review, simply because I think the dentists, specifically Dr. Dietrich, are great and do good work, but unfortunately, my experience with the office in general was less than pleasant. I came to this office some time in 2009 when my husband and I moved to the North Shore. I read many reviews on the office that seemed positive and also went ahead and double checked that it was covered by our (federal) insurance plan. The first few years were great, we had our normal cleanings as often as necessary and I had some additional dental work done, such as fillings, root canals and crowns that came out great. However, over the last couple of years our customer service experience has definitely declined. I had to call at least 5-6 times over the course of a few months to have my husband's insurance information corrected (for the same exact problem), which should have been the exact same coverage that I had because we are under the same plan, but for some reason that concept was difficult for the receptionists to understand. It turns out, his insurance had not even been in their system since the beginning, and we had been paying for services that our dental insurance would have covered, at least in part, for years! Although the office did reimburse us a little over $150 at one point for the overpayments, I can't help but wonder how much more we overpaid because of this mixup that we tried to correct many a time. The last straw was just a few weeks ago when I called to reschedule my cleaning appointment only to be reprimanded rudely by the receptionist over the phone, who accused me of missing/breaking too many appointments and then proceeded to hang up the phone without letting me speak. I received a letter in the mail a few days after saying they would have to "terminate our professional relationship" because of my missed appointments. I have never experienced being "kicked out" of any medical practice, but it seems to me a very unprofessional practice at best. One of my best friend's in the Cambridge area, who is also a dental professional, agreed that it was not a practice that most dentists would approve of. Going to the dentist is not the most pleasant experience for most people to begin with and adding bad customer service to the mix only makes it worse. I have since switched dentists and am loving my new Dr, so this might have been a blessing in disguise! read more

I've been going here for a while and never had a bad experience (and trust me I hate the dentist). But the last two times I had Dawna (the daughter of the owner) and she was deplorable. Just her overall demeanor and egotistical approach made both myself and the assistant very uncomfortable. Extremely disappointing since the staff here has always been super friendly and welcoming. She wouldn't take any advice from the assistant and was ruthless with picking at my teeth. I know the picking is normal practice but I'm smart enough to know it was overboard. If you're looking for a mouth full of pain after simple cleaning and bunch of cocky attitude on the side then this is your place. Otherwise I'd say stay away. read more

I have been going to Dr. Kowalski for more than 30 years. On my first visit, he told me he does not believe in "recreational dentistry" and that sold me. Over the years, he has proven that true. I have had many different dental insurance plans, and he has taken them all - I've never had the hassle of finding a new dentist. I now drive 60 miles to go to Kowalski dental because I completely trust him and all his staff. I can't speak highly enough of this practice. read more

I googled Dr Kowalski to get his phone number and when I saw it listed that he had 3/5 stars instead of 5 I had to check it out! I have been to several dentists and I love Dr. Kowalski and the staff there. I had a Boston dentist who I loved and once he retired his replacement came in and told me that I needed a crown for $2700. I asked this new guy if he could try to fill it first and he said no, the tooth had too much damage and would not even consider it. I told him I was going to get a second opinion and so I booked an appointment with Dr. Kowalski based on a friend's recommendation. I have never been back to the Boston office. My first visit to Dr. Kowolski I had my teeth xrayed and he said he felt that the tooth could be filled and if it did not work we could get a crown in the future. That was 3 years ago and I still have that filling. I have had nothing but great experiences here (as great as you can have at a dentist's office!). Please know that people will complain before they compliment, so if you've had a good experience, Yelp* it! Also love how they responded to the negative Yelp*'s with their positive replies. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time and I feel confident that even if Dr. Kowalski's office made an error they would make it right! But I have confidence that the error wouldn't happen to begin with! read more

Avoid, had 4:30 appointment, so I left work early taking personal time ... Due to the weather and traffic I called and told them I was running about 10 minutes late ... They told me they wouldn't wait, and had to reschedule ... Very poor customer service ... Terrible way to treat someone that's being going there for years ... read more
