Maybe it was just because I went with awesome people, but I really enjoyed dinner there. I was a little disappointed at first when we couldn't get outdoors seating (it's pretty dim inside), but it really is no bother after your eyes adjust. I do really like the ambiance near the entrance, where you can see the food and shellfish being freshly prepared, and the bread getting sliced. feels good to watch your chickens getting slaughtered. just playin.
I love the never-ending bread and their delicious oil with minced olives. The oil is delicious and the olives are a great addition without being salty. The bread seriously just goes with everything that hits the table.
Moules with chorizo. It was little smaller than I was hoping for moules, but maybe still 20-25 or so in there? The mussels and the chorizo were both very yummy. The broth is cream and tomato and some other stuff in there. And it's freaking delicious as well. Good for dipping bread. Not so good for dipping the pommes frites because it's not very viscous. The fries were somewhat bland but well crisped. They aren't big and meaty fries, but not shoestrings either.
Bouillabaisse. This was delicious as well. Mussels, clams, shrimp, a few pieces of what seem to be tuna, etc. It has an interesting, almost soapy, taste to it, which I thought might have been from some herb (i.e. basil), but my friend thought it was from gruyere. In any case, still very yummy, and GREAT FOR DIPPING BREAD. It comes in a large dish, but mostly just shellfish taking up space.
Other bits and pieces I had:
Strip Steak: medium rare, was DELICIOUS. the seasoning and texture were perfect.
Salade Nicoise: the seared tuna was good, but the myosepta were unchewable and basically felt like tearing flesh from a grapefruit.
Duck Confit: duck was yummy but salty at times. i normally don't like duck anyways.
Desserts:
White Chocolate Apple Bread Pudding: delicious heap of bread pudding in a plate with (somewhat burnt) caramel sauce. this was my fave.
Lemon torte: second fave. creamy but tart, also with a very brittle top-shell of caramel like the creme brulee =D
Vanilla Creme Brulee: third fave. creme brulee with a very brittle coating of caramel. yummy but it was just kinda...boring. i think i just prefer desserts that involve flour or crusts.
Chocolate Mousse: sorry if this offends you mousse lovers, but to my (uncultured) tongue, this tasted just like chocolate ice cream.
Chocolate torte: this was not very sweet. i think it was dark chocolate? but still.
(I normally don't crave chocolate desserts.)
The service was exceptional. wait staff kept our bread and waters filled constantly and we never wondered "when can we get more bread/water?" our main waiter (Louis) was awesome: very friendly, kept us laughing, and was never MIA.
I'm sad I'd never been here before up until now. I'll definitely hope to go again in the near future, before I leave Durham. It is kind of pricey, but I totally think it's worth it. Gotta get more of their seafood!! Unfortunately I didn't try this controversial mac&cheese, but I will next time! Also, maybe it's because I haven't had Rue Cler recently, but I think I'd prefer Vin Rouge over Rue Cler.
I had been planning on cancelling my reservation for graduation weekend ($55 prix fixe...which the person on the phone called pree-fee -__-), but I might consider keeping it now. read more
