However, the instructors there assured me that this wouldn't be a problem, and if I needed any help or had any questions, they would be there to assist. It was very informal, very informative, and I had a great time there. Not only did the instructors make an effort to see if I was following along or understood what they were saying, the students in attendance also were very helpful as well. I basically felt at ease while doing this course. As one student said, "Food is an international language!", and "See, it's not rocket science?", even if I couldn't understand all the German spoken there, it was very easily to follow along and figure out, just by listening and watching what they were doing. It is also a good idea to be active and help out with the cooking to get some hands-on experience, which everyone did of course as part of the instruction. There was plenty of wine and other drinks there, and we got to eat our project during the course. Basically it was like a 4-course meal with dessert and drinks, but we prepared our meals for everyone like in a fancy restaurant. The most difficult part of the course was not my fears of being able to understand, but during the middle when we cooked and prepared the meats, because they smelled so good! One of the students joked with me in saying, "Hey Jerry, just sliced the meat, don't taste it now!" Hahah... If you enjoy cooking and want to learn something new, I highly recommend attending Das Kockwerk sometime. As a matter of fact, when the time comes, I may take another one of their courses, perhaps the Thai/Asian course, or one of the other many classes they offer that are informative and interesting as well. They have a very friendly and helpful staff, so don't worry, you won't be on Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen!

The moment we clarified we weren't together and I brought in my Brown boyfriend, the host seemed visibly perplexed, and the tone shifted. Throughout the evening, we were denied a simple wine tasting, then largely ignored, which left us with a strong impression of biased, discriminatory treatment. To make matters worse, staff repeatedly emphasized the price of everything, which came off as patronizing and inappropriate regardless of anyone's background or perceived status. This experience felt xenophobic and racist, and it was frankly vile--there are far too many restaurants in Austria to support one that treats guests this way. As two physicians who take care of people in their darkest hours, it felt incredibly degrading to be treated this way when we were simply trying to enjoy an evening away from the stress of our daily careers. I would hope that the owners of this establishment would take a hard look at the standards set for their employees and management practices going forward to create a safe atmosphere where all connoisseurs can gather and vibe even in just a moment of peace from the day-to-day hardships we can all certainly relate to. Shameful behavior indeed. Pity, as the ambience and wine selection was delicious but tainted by the ugly reminder of bigotry.

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.
