Our room was clean and well maintained. The beds were comfortable, and housekeeping serviced the room twice daily. Most of the staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The reception team and bellhop were fantastic, and front office staff provided great restaurant recommendations that helped make our trip even more enjoyable. One of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast. The spread was impressive, with freshly baked bread, pastries, scrambled eggs, fruit, and plenty of other options. Everything was fresh, tasted good and the presentation was amazing! It was a great way to start each day. There were a few minor issues that kept this from being a 5-star stay. One housekeeper seemed frustrated when we returned to the room around noon while she was beginning to clean. We asked if she could come back in about 15 minutes, and she didn't seem pleased with the request, especially when we were still in the room when she returned. Additionally, although the room was cleaned regularly, our bed sheets were not changed during our 4-night stay. The biggest issue was the shower drain, which backed up and flooded the bathroom. We were told the water pressure was stronger than the drain could handle, but it was still inconvenient and I believe it's something that shouldn't happen. The staff was so kind to offer a change in rooms if the problem still persisted but it was more of a hassle to change rooms so we just stayed. Also, there was street construction during our visit, which I learned only started the week before we arrived. It's not their fault but it was another inconvenience because our taxi couldn't get to the hotel directly and we had to drag our luggage over the cobblestone streets which wasn't fun at all. Despite those issues, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying here again on a future trip to Florence.

The hotel was centrally located, and it's one of the more modern, elegant hotels we've stayed at during our trip. The Duomo and Piazza Santa Maria Novella were steps away from the hotel, and it's a less than 10 minute taxi to the train station. Their complimentary breakfast was amazing. They offered a huge variety of items including hot food, tortes, cereals, fruit, cheeses, parfaits, quiches, etc. I enjoyed a latte every morning with them. Our room at Hotel Spadai was excellent. Very spacious with tall ceilings and had plenty of room for us to lay out 2 large pieces of luggage and 2 small carry-ons. The bathroom was big as well, but the shower was disproportionate to it. The shower felt so much smaller, and what's weird was its two double doors. The doors met at the corner of the shower and didn't close all the way, so water could easily escape to the floor. Other than that, I would 1000% stay at this hotel again next time I'm in Florence.

The stairs are a few steps away from our door and I forgot they were there and tripped down the stairs. Miraculously landed on my feet. The rooms weren't updated but had a nice Italian charm to them. They refill the complimentary mini bar everyday and it came with snacks and a variety of drinks, which we enjoyed. The rooms were also a very decent size. The beds are extremely firm and not in a good way. We looked it up and that's how Italians like it. The buffet breakfast had a good variety and was very busy. If you are lucky, you get to sit by the window with a view of the duomo. I noticed the staff ask a few people if they wanted a cappuccino or another drink that wasn't being served at the buffet but we were never asked and it was hard to flag them down.

With the security measures in the hotel, it is undoubtedly an inside job. The attitude from the front desk showed that this was not the first occurrence. This is our worst travel experience.

We've stayed at many fabulous properties and the service at this boutique hotel ranks at the top with the best of them. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us in every way - the front desk staff was warm and friendly from the first moment, allowed early check in, researched various options for our day trip and arranged the rental car that was brought to the hotel and picked up at the end of our use (a huge convenience when unfamiliar and uncomfortable about driving in the middle of the chaotic Italian city driving). Because of the location of the hotel, we simply drove over the bridge to the other side of the river and we were off to the small towns of Tuscany. When we asked about their recommendation on our first day for a quick lunch, the doorman walked us to the restaurant. The breakfast was visually appealing and tasty, in the chic and warm library. Perfectly flaky croissants and a wide variety of interesting warm and cold breakfast choices, including honey presented in the honeycomb. The breakfast staff was professional and exceptionally attentive - for instance, when one of my daughters went up to the room not feeling well, the staff assembled an assortment of breakfast items beautifully and offered to take it to her in the room. Loved the quality materials, finishings and details in the hotel. The heated towel rack, fluffy towels and robes, the great closet and sleek armoire with all the organized space made our stay even more enjoyable. The only suggestion I have for the hotel is that the cleaning staff communicate to the management if something needs repair. In our two rooms (310 & 311), the tub drains didn't work properly and took forever to drain. In the triple room, it was less of a big deal since there was a separate shower, but in the twin room that had the combination shower tub, it wasn't pleasant standing in the dirty soapy water waiting. We didn't complain because we were there for three nights and didn't want to be inconvenienced with repair work or moving to a different room. Overall, I still rate it 5 stars because everything else was outstanding and we would stay here again. We checked out their other two sister properties and although they were beautiful, we like this hotel better. The Hotel Continental across the courtyard has a rooftop bar overlooking the Arno River and the Lungarno Hotel has a beautiful patio restaurant with gorgeous views of the Arno River, but we liked the modern style of this hotel better. Guests can choose to eat breakfast at the Lungarno Hotel instead (for a nominal supplemental charge). We chose to skip that option bc our hotel offered plenty of options in their breakfast and the convenience factor. Perhaps if our stay was longer, we would have tried it for variety and to eat outside next to the river. The other two hotels were beautiful but a little stuffier and more traditional in my opinion based upon a quick visit of those two hotels.

While preparing for a night out in Florence, I needed an iron to smooth out my trousers from two…read moredays in a suitcase. As none was in our room, we called the front desk at Hotel Degli Orafi to request one. Instead of the typical, "we'll send it right up," we were told they couldn't provide one for "security reasons." Bewildered at how lending a guest an iron could present a security issue, and knowing that even most mid-level hotels routinely provide irons in guest rooms, I decided I needed to speak face to face with front desk personnel to understand what this meant. Because as best I could surmise, the only "security" issues that could possibly arise from use of an iron are 1) that I might use it to bash or burn my girlfriend (she's far too lovely for that), or 2) I might steal it. Neither of which I had any plan to do, nor gave hotel staff any reason to suspect. When I presented these two scenarios to the front desk attendant, and asked what other security issue might be of concern, she said a guest might burn themself. Seriously?!? In other words, the security risk they sought to minimize was not that toward third parties I might attack with their iron, nor to the hotel itself, were I to steal it, but rather it was the risk to myself they were concerned about. Of all the lame excuses she could have contrived, that one deserved a double take! In 40 years of travels, having stayed in dozens of hotels on five continents, never have I heard an innkeeper express concern for a guest burning themself with an iron! While her explanation was the lowest point of my Hotel Degli Orafi experience, it wasn't the only low point. See photos.
