About three years ago I had the pleasure of meeting a kind gentleman who worked in the downstairs grilling area of the store. We chatted a bit and I eventually purchased a grill. One of my first jobs as a youth was working at a local hardware store. So seeing all of the familiar odds and ends made me feel a bit nostalgic. I always have supported local business and took it as a sense of local pride that my phone number is among those listed as a frequent customer. So if you want to support local business that supports it's local community, this is the place to go. So.... why not 5 stars then? (Warning: Reading and Feelings Involved. They are a great shop with great staff in the following has no bearing on how I feel about their services, competency, or policies) Well, as someone who has worked retail, and works in the business world, I am a fan of communication and the appearance of customer service, even if you're telling the customer something that they do not like. I was in the market for some fire starters as I am taking my younger kids on a camping trip. I happened to arrive at 5:59. The store closes at 6:00. As I approached, I noticed that the door inside was being unlocked to let out two people, then the door was locked behind them. The store closes at 6:00. I attempted to make eye contact with the individual locking the door but failed at that. Another gentleman from inside walked past the front door and I said "Oh, I was late, sorry." and he made no eye contact, or didn't hear me, or knew they were closed.... something. But that interaction, or lack thereof made me feel as though I was encroaching on their time. Which I might have been. But from a customer service standpoint, and from my perspective, I would have appreciated a "Sorry, we are closed" verbally. They didn't have to do that, but it would have been nice. I think I've seen maybe one too many movie where someone goes to a place for assistance, and the townsfolk obviously lock the door. They don't know if I was going to say I left my car keys there or whatever. It just didn't feel right at the time. Long story short. Great store. I found what I needed at the grocery store, but I wanted to spend my money with them. Oh well. No love lost. read more

Been coming to this store for just short of a decade. Very helpful and knowledgeable folks that will help you find what you are looking for and/or talk through your do-it-yourself weekend projects. A great store for our community. As some have mentioned it did change ownership a year or so ago, but that is the cycle of things and the new ownership team works to keep the store's traditions. Recently we bought a Weber 26 inch grill for the best price ever (on sale, lower than box stores and military exchanges in Norfolk, Alexandria, Guam and lower than direct from Weber). We got a discount for our next purchase too. The seasonings for grilling are fantastic (so are the recommendations and you can sample some of the seasonings before you buy)! Surprisingly poor customer service from a small neighborhood store. I chose to purchase a grill from Village rather than online or from a large chain store. I was told the grill could be delivered in a couple of days and made plans for it for Memorial Day. However, no call and no show, still, as of today; It has been over a week. The point of frustration is we couldn't leave the area over the holiday weekend while anticipating a delivery that never came. I just purchased a Toro SnowMaster Snow Blower from Village Hardware and I could not be happier with the experience! Village Hardware is a traditional neighborhood hardware store, with a knowledgeable staff and just about anything you could possibly need for a home project. It's a bit of a drive from our home, but worth the extra time. When we realized that the snow blower wouldn't fit in my Ford Explorer, the salesman shrugged and said, "not a problem, we'll drop it off at your house!" I was shocked. The very next day, I got a call from someone saying that they were delivering the snow blower, and then another call to let me know where I could find it when I got home. I thought I was in Mayberry (Millennials can "Google" Mayberry). Anyway, shop here. It's much easier than going to a big box store and you can trust the advice you get from these folks. That's important...less stressful, which I guess makes it a healthy alternative to big box hardware stores. read more

Village Hardware is the throwback hardware store, a throwback to an earlier time - when the neighborhood hardware store is where one went for any tool or part. I made the trip out to visit - as they were the only place in the entire Washington, DC/MD/VA area that carries a specific product - the Rapid Reels - 2-Wheel Cart - Garden Hose Reel. How many of you have been to Lowe's, The Home Depot, or elsewhere, and bought a hose reel sold at these places? How many of you have had the product last one or two seasons (or less) and then break? Every brand of hose reel I looked at looked like cheap crap. Then I found Rapid Reel online. I wanted to see one. And Village Hardware has one on display! Place has gone extremely downgill since being sold. This is NOT the family business of 2 years ago. They used to have tons of kids who all knew where everything was and the place was always packed with people shooting the breeze and being helpful. No one in there much. I live in Groveton war Lowe's and Home Depot. Those are useful stores, but this is an amazing hardware store. They've figured out their competitive advantage. They have specialized products that I couldn't find in the big box hardware stores. They're authorized Yeti and Traeger dealers have an an AMAZING "grill room" which is essentially the basement that's only dedicated to grilling supplies. I will strive to shop at this store for anything I need. Great customer service and feels like a real local hardware store that is hard to find these days. read more

This hardware store is definitely unique, however I would say that they are not really competitive. I went in there today for some Benjamin Moore paint and was disappointed that they do not offer competitive prices. At $63.09 per gallon I decided to make the drive from here to Springfield where the price is $50.00 per gallon. I would probably only purchase paint from here if I was in a tight situation regarding time, where I would have no other option. The younger Employee asked the older gentleman in the back, who didn't even bother to get up out of his chair to greet me. Since I only needed two gallons, I figured it was worth the drive. I know that the big box hardware store has received a lot of flack for putting smaller hardware stores out of business, and I would agree that these smaller hardware stores do bring some value to the community. However, their prices do appear to be somewhat higher. read more

Could not have had a better experience here! I bought a new Weber gas grill. The guy in the store was very knowledgeable and spent a good amount of time with me. Turns out he was the store owner. After figuring out my best options to consider, he gave me his card and said I could just call back to order it. I did some online comparison shopping and realized that, although their price was higher, it included free assembly and delivery, plus they hauled away the old grill. They also transferred the propane tank and shined up the grill when it was in place. For my money, all that service more than made up for the slightly higher price. All that, plus an old fashioned hardware store with helpful, knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend you check them out! read more

Nestled in a historic 1940's building, the inside is deceivingly large. We were immediately met by several cheerful employees who directed us down to the grill area in the basement. Not knowing exactly what we wanted or needed, the owner of Village Hardware happily took the time to explain everything we didn't know and guided us in the right direction. All prices were competitive with the big box stores, and ended up coming in at slightly less when all extras were factored in. Free set-up, next-day delivery, and old grill haul-away left us happy and grilling without a breaking back the following day. It's a good old-fashion hardware store, with the ability to actually touch and purchase the screws/bolts you need (rather than having them in sealed package like big box). Smart people. Only don't trust their hours of operation. They put lots of merchandise out on the sidewalk for display during the day. At night, this is all brought inside in placed in the aisles. If you arrive within a half hour or so before closing, you only be able to get down the aisles by climbing over stuff -- basically completely blocked. Good luck trying to find something on the shelf! But the rest of the time it is great. read more

Employees are standing 1 foot away from each other, standing 1 to 2 feet away from customers, no masks no gloves. They usually have what I need, and it's much better quality. The service is top notch. My most recent purchase was a grill and I can't be happier. They assembled it, delivered it (same day), and demonstrated how to use it. Plus they have a huge area downstairs dedicated to grills, parts, accessories and grilling supplies. I buy all my lawn care supplies and hardware items there. Admittedly it is pricey, but the stuff is high quality. Village Hardware is a well-run neighborhood store with lots of tools and gadgets and an intriguing room full of grills and smokers. We've bought gardening supplies there, as well as tools and items for repairing things around the house. Items are of high quality, and it's easy to find an employee to answer questions. My favorite recent acquisition is 14-inch pruning saw that folds up like a pocket knife. All of a sudden I could do something about ancient overgrown shrubs without damaging new growth. This store has the best home delivery I've found in the area for mulch, gravel, etc. The price is very reasonable, the delivery folks arrive when expected, and put things where you specify. read more

Yeah, its crowded in there with tools and supplies in every corner but that is part of its charm. However, as crowded and Hodge-podged as it is, Village Hardware far surpasses the Megastores in the area of service. I stopped in today to pickup some frog tape and hadn't walked five feet before a friendly employee asked, "May I help you find something?" I really didn't think I had much of a chance with something as obscure as frog tape in such small store, but I was wrong. Within less than 3 minutes, I had said frog tape in hand and out the door. I seriously doubt the Megastores could match that level of service. It would take me 15 minutes to just walk the store floor. Sure, I might have saved a few pennies by going to the Megastores, but there is something nice about supporting the 'little guy'. This store has never let me down and should be the first place you think of when you think of hardware. OOO, I think I see the construction of a man-cave in the future ;) read more

They stock everything that you could possibly need for around the house and have a decent selection for the size of their store. Located in the Fort Hunt area, they are a little off the beaten path for me, but I would go back for their service and to pick up a new grill based on another positive review. Honestly, these stores are few and far between so I would rather spend my money at a local shop then a big chain. This is an excellent and well stocked independent hardware store. Beyond anything else though, this hardware store has many excellent knowledgeable and friendly staff on hand to help you out. They have a great stock of grills and grilling accessories as well as all of the typical things you find at the hardware store, with the exception of lumber. I purchased a Weber grill from Village Hardware in 2007 after finding an unsatisfactory selection at Home Depot and Lowe's. I'm glad I did. The service at the official Weber dealer was excellent. The staff was friendly, willing to answer questions and explain the difference between models. So when I needed to purchase a new mower today, I was pleased to find out from the Toro website that that Village Hardware was an official dealer. I first visited Home Depot, which was running a special on Toro products, and then Village Hardware. I was concerned I couldn't get the same low price that Home Depot was offering. But when I asked if Village Hardware would match Home Depot's price, the salesman said he would. Then he offered to assemble the mower, fill it with oil and gas, and even send in the warranty card. Another employee tested it to make sure it was working properly and then loaded it in my car. Not only was the selection of mowers comparable, but the service far exceeded my expectations. And to think I almost bought the same model at Home Depot without these extra perks! I would strongly recommend Village Hardware for Weber grills and Toro mowers as well as other hardware needs. This is the kind of hardware store that smells of roofing nails and testosterone. Which is a good thing. Even if you're a female like me. There are no blindingly bright lights. No wide aisles. And, best of all, no waiting and searching for someone to help you, because they are right there asking if you need help before you even realize you have questions. It's just you and an intimate relationship with the hard goods around you. This is an old-school hardware store. When I first moved into my home, I needed some nails. Now, this will excite anyone who is into this kind of thing--they have a nail room. A tight little room filled with nails of every kind. Like a typical neophyte female DIY person, I grabbed the 6 nails I needed, along with a few other things, and headed for the register. The guy at the register looked at my nails and kind of chuckled. Who knew people bought nails by the pound? I certainly didn't. So the guy just gave me the nails on top of everything else I bought. And that, right there, is why I spend more time at Village Hardware than any Lowes and Home Depot. They care about the customer relationship. But it's more than a gift of nails. There's always someone ready to help you. And you know you're giving your money to a family operation who puts quality above all else. Are you going to find the cheapest mower here? No. But you'll find one you can count on to be good quality and a good value. And they probably have one of the best grill selections in the area. I have never found anything I've bought there--from painting supplies to tarps to duplicate keys--to be anything but first-rate quality. Since I'm not terribly handy, I mostly go there to buy pots and soil, firewood and the like. And guess what? There's a strapping young man at the ready to carry everything out to my car for me. So while Lowes and Home Depot may have a lot of things this relatively small pace doesn't, Village Hardware has things those places could never have--soul, service and grit. And, not for nothing, you're in and out of that place in a snap...no long lines or searching through miles of aisles for what you need.
