Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon, I could see that there was definitely value for money, based on the presentation of the store. They had a holiday sale on before Christmas and I was able to browse their selection. There's a little bit of everything here and I never knew it was so large! I absolutely love this Ace store - the staff here are super friendly, welcoming, and are readily available to assist/answer any questions! It may seem small from the outside, but it has a great selection as well as super competitively priced! I was able to get locate a specific seasoning blend here, and also was able to check out some of their Yeti tumblers. They had a few racks of greeting cards, and I love that they carry independent card designers, so I picked up a few of those, too! You can find street parking in the front or around the block, and it's usually best to go in the morning. I like to give my business to smaller, neighborhood businesses such as this even though I pay a bit more. Bryant is a true lead in customer care here. A few of the others could take some notes from him on how to handle customer concerns. I was 30 steps away from giving my money to Bezos when he asked if he could help and saved the sale. He also took steps to prevent future shoppers to running in to the same concern I had right then and there. Grateful to have this close by and grateful to be assisted by Bryant today. read more

DO NOT USE THEIR WEBSITE FOR ORDERS! Placed an order, only to have it cancelled. Then refund never occurred. Took the money in seconds, now they say it takes a "few days" to get any refund. Nothing on the order being cancelled in an email, or giving me a phonecall (THEY HAD MY NUMBER!) Seemed odd to me, but they said it was still being processed, but it got cancelled. No emails, no looking at other locations for it to get it sent over. Lost time and money for my efforts. Also their point system is a joke. Someone hacked their system and took over my cellphone number for the customer points - now I have less of a reason to go back to their online services. My advice, go into the store, ignore their help, get what you need, and get out. Their salespeople don't know what they are doing half the time, and a couple of them are probably hungover, too busy playing on their cellphones, or otherwise unable to keep regular jobs. No wonder stores like these are going out of business, and good riddance. Had I bought this by Amazon, it would have been here already. read more

Nice to have a local hardware store. Too bad they cannot find managers to care for the store and customers. Reading other reviews it looks like poor customer service, particularly when trying to return products is a big problem. Tried to make a simple exchange of one can of spray paint which I purchased the day before and never used for another of the exact same manufacturer, size and type. I picked up semi gloss instead of flat. However I did not use my Ace phone number. I showed the manager a receipt but he chastised me for not using my rewards number and suggested that if I was unhappy that I shouldn't come back to Ace. Wow. Maybe he's a closet millionaire and just manages Ace as a hobby. read more

I've lived in Old Town for about 18 years, and have frequented this hardware store a lot. In the past, my experiences have been very good. Recently, not so much. Today I went to look for a product. No one was around to help me, and when I asked someone for help, he said that he was busy, but I could go upstairs and try to find somebody. Alas, not a soul around. I came back down and another employee somewhat begrudgingly agreed ( as opposed to offer) to help. I sensed I was bothering him. And, ultimately, he was not able to find what I was looking for. I had a similar experience several months ago. When I compare this with the stellar customer service of the McLean Ace Hardware, there is NO comparison. Service reps. ask if they may help you as soon as you enter the store, and they are usually successful. Is in person customer service a dying art at this store? I surely hope not. But, I will not visit the Alexandria Washington Street location again any time soon. read more

I placed a curbside pick up order an hour ago; 1 gallon of ceiling paint (they grab it off the shelf), and 1 gallon of another (the machine actually mixes it after they grab the paint from the shelf. The place I usually get my paint from is closed on Sunday's and I want to finish today. I received a call to collect my payment 40 min ago and was told it would be done in 15 min "give it take"... so 20 min, right? Nope, got here and have been waiting. Saw a guy go in and leave with 2 boxes of paint and I'm still waiting. I just don't get why this is so hard. My payment was ran immediately and $137.78 for 2 gallons of paint. Payment shouldn't be ran until the items are ready. My amazing luck, It probably won't match. Btw... still waiting. Why is this so difficult? I remember when ACE was the place... We have a new bed set that my boyfriend built and we went to our new local Ace to pick out our paint color. We got a sample with Jeff who was extremely helpful! He helped us pick our color and discussed pricing options. We went home and tested the color and loved it so we went back a few days later to buy a quart of it and noticed a sign that the samples had been free. I asked about it and was told that my previous $7 sample was included in that special for the date purchased but because I didn't notice the sign, they couldn't refund anything. Pretty disappointed as we have a ton of upcoming projects and will be driving a little further to another hardware store to make sure we're taken care of. read more

This review is based on my last visit to this store on 12/27/23. I like this store. It has a varied and an extensive amount of goods. On my last visit, the service was mediocre. Someone greeted me at the door and asked me if I needed help. He told me which aisles to look in. I told him I would need further help with a particular product I was buying, and he was not very attentive. I had to keep asking him for what I needed. Very disappointing service. read more

I want to like this place, but man do they make it tough. Today I went in to return two submersible pumps I had recently purchased but had never opened or used. The woman who tried to process the return was nice and courteous (which is why they get two stars from me rather than one). The computer wouldn't let her process the return so she went to talk with her manager. After a few minutes she came back and said that the pumps they sell are not returnable even if they had remained sealed in the box in perfect condition as mine were. I asked for a store credit and was told they don't do that. When I originally purchased the pumps, two different employees helped me find them and pay for them. Neither of them ever told me they were not returnable even if they were unopened and unused. Had I known this I would never have purchased them in the first place. This seems like a dishonest business practice as I think in 2019 it's a general norm that you can return unused/unopened things you buy from a store. But apparently that doesn't apply to submersible pumps from Old Town Ace. I've been a customer here many times in the past but am now uncertain if I will ever go back. read more

The customer service at Old Town Ace Hardware is sorely lacking. My experiences with obtaining assistance at this store are on the same level with that of Home Depot or Lowes: Lots of staff available on the floor, all walk right by without offering assistance. The absence of proactive and friendly customer service at Old Town Ace Hardware is quite evident compared to Cherrydale Hardware in Arlington, or Logan Hardware in DC. At those stores, you are immediately greeted upon entering and asked how you can be helped. Old Town Ace Hardware staff seemingly can't be bothered. On a positive note, the checkout staff are quite friendly and happy to take your money. I can get that same experience at Home Depot and Lowes while saving significant money. I am all for supporting local businesses, and that, combined with convenience, have been my primary motivators for shopping at Old Town Ace Hardware. The poor customer service has me rethinking my rationale. This store needs to step up its customer service and engagement game significantly to differentiate itself from the big box guys. Check out previous Yelp reviews. Complaints about poor customer service are a trend with Old Town Ace Hardware, despite responses from the company indicating that the complaints are merely exceptions. Bad customer experiences cannot be remedied by carefully worded Yelp responses. Systemic problems such as this require real solutions and work. read more

This hardware store is ok, but it still can't match the Village Hardware in Fort Hunt Rd..Still, it is nice to support a local business. I came in here to obtain some bolts to secure a headboard, and picked up a few more items. When I got home, I realized that the bolts had not been placed in my shopping bag. I was distressed doing a DIY job and went to Ace Hardware in Alexandria, VA. They understood my problem and spent nearly an hour solving the problem - sliding shower door sweep into drip rail, educated me that to lubricate, I should use a silicon lubricant. I use Ace a lot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and I love this store. Very, very helpful and courteous. We spend lots of money there to maintain our B&B. The employees at this store need a refresher course in customer service. The last three times I was there was very disappointing. One time I almost walked out. The person had no interest in helping me solve my fix on a repair I was working on. I will only go there unless I absolutely have to. read more

I came in here looking for a few tank bolts and I encountered some of the worst customer service in my life. If you go upstairs and to and get help - good luck. The man was going ro make a key for me while I was there and he just walked over to someone else and asked what they needed help with. Eh so they old fella has ADD - I get it. Oh no. Same thing when I was checking out. The check out guy was talking to me about policy and some of my purchase and he just stopped mid sentence and started talking to someone that just walked into the store. Incredibly rude. I recently visited Old Town Ace Hardware and was asked by no fewer than five employees if they could help me find something. The cashier asked if I had an Ace account to which I replied that I had one about five years ago when we last lived in the area. He looked me up and found my account. This kind of service has become extremely rare. Moreover, the store is well equipped with a wide variety of useful items. Since we were last there, it has expanded its physical space significantly so it has even more hardware and other items. After I found the level I went there for and was preparing to check out, another employee who was pushing a large cart with boxes stacked on it asked if I had any questions. I explained a project I had coming up that would require a long handle to hold a paint roller. "Follow me." I did and he showed me what they had, demonstrated its use and answered all my questions. I will definitely buy those items and others at the Ace store. Bye bye Lowe's. read more

I love that places like this still exist. Small hardware stores where you can get anything from a handful of nails to a pine bough wreath to a section of pvc pipe. My dentist is in the same block so I've popped in here a few times when I've been visiting this part of Old Town recently. I'm still exploring the place but each time I discover something new and wander home with some new acquisition. Most recently I discovered they carry these cute little sock slipper things that are supposed to make it easier to go through airport screening. I've become mildly obsessed with them as they're convenient for a number of other situations. Was pleasantly surprised to find them here - and at a lower price than I'd seen them anywhere else including online. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the 2-level store divided into logical sections covering most household needs. Currently there's a large selection of seasonal items on the first level along with some general hardware sections. Kitchen, pets, plumbing, and a few other sections are found upstairs. read more

Purchased an ACE lawn sprinkler this spring to get ready for warm weather at this store and after a week of warm weather, it started leaking. I read the ACE guarantee on the back that said if not satisfied bring it back for a replacement item, which I did. The manager told me that ACES are independently owned and their guarantees are only for 30 days regardless of the ACE guarantees on the back. Two lessons.....do not purchase ACE products and do not purchase anything at this store. I've used ACE stores in the past but here is a tip for a good hardware store that's close, better, and on a major league level compared to this Old Town trap......Hollin Hall Hardware on fort hunt road. If customer service is important to you, I recommend you shop elsewhere. This is my local hardware store, and I used to go here for everything I need, but I will never shop here again. Last week, I purchased a tube of sealant from this store for a small household project. The container was labeled "clear." A week later, when I went to use it, it seems the product was mislabeled and it was actually white sealant, which is not suitable for my project. I went back to the store and asked if I could exchange it for the correct item, but I explained that I did not have the receipt. The clerk basically called me a liar, when he asked how could he know that I didn't buy the product from another store. Offended at his insinuation that I was lying, I asked to speak to another clerk. Another clerk then explained that they could not exchange the item without a receipt, so I left. Had the initial clerk simply stated that he could not exchange the item without a receipt, I would have been disappointed, but would have understood. However, after being insulted by the initial clerk, I will now take my business elsewhere. read more

Customer service is non-existent at this Ace Hardware in old town Alexandria. Very disappointing experience compared to all the Ace hardware stores I've been to in Washington DC and in other cities. Despite the store not being busy, not one employee bothered to ask if I needed any assistance and appeared totally indifferent which was so odd and unlike other Ace hardware stores around the country. On top of that, everyone working at this Ace was unmasked with the exception of the cashier. This is very concerning from a public health and safety standpoint. This Ace misses the mark for many reasons mainly lack of interest toward their customers. Who needs that when there are other options?. I don't recommend this Ace and would go the extra mile to the Ace in Arlington or better yet, to Columbia Heights in DC where staff are attentive, knowledgeable and go out of their way to assist customers. Hope the management reads this and similar feedback. We wanted to patronize this hardware store since we live in the area and don't like to see everything taken over by big box stores. However, we will not be back. We went in to get two gallons of paint for accent walls. We could have color matched at Home Depot, but opted to go to a Benjamin Moore dealer. The paint counter representative looked somewhat annoyed that we were there. We asked for recommendations on paint finish and he threw a card at us and said he doesn't make recommendations, it's a personal preference. Really? I'm fairly certain, there are ranges of recommendations he could have made based on usage. While he couldn't recommend a finish, apparently he could recommend paint quality, because when we went to the register to ring out, we realized he mixed the more expensive primer + paint blend (which we did not ask for). So the sticker shock added insult to injury. read more

Love the Ace Hardware in Old Town! My husband can go run around shopping for tape measures and air filters while I peruse the fun and quirky selection of chotchkes and home decor. There seems to always be plenty of staff on hand and they were very friendly and helpful. Although the guy who was helping us was faking a Fargo accent for no apparent reason. Whatever gets you through the day, buddy! Why bother fighting the hoi polloi at Lowe's or Home Depot when this friendly hardware shop is right around the corner? read more
