They are not like other growers that will sell you just anything. His plants are all Native to our area. I value him and his knowledge so much he always takes time with me. Beautiful gardens, the two same friendly dogs still in residence, lots of herbs & native plants for sale, & informed owners more than willing to share their knowledge. Came away with a lovely native aster & a culinary sage this time. Last year's purchased native aster morphed from a one-footer when planted last fall into a 3-foot tall x 4-foot spread gorgeous cloud of tiny lavender blossoms a couple of weeks ago (& still going strong!), so am looking forward to planting another slightly different variety next to it for an additional show next fall. And the six different columbines I purchased last year also put on a glorious show this past spring, & their reseeded seedlings are popping up everywhere, which I love to see. All in all, a lovely little spot to pick up nice native or culturally-positive-to-the-area plants, as well as enthusiasm from the owners.

We will definitely make this part of our regular grocery shopping. This is the beginning of the season, which means that many food items are just now becoming available. In spite of this, we were impressed by the selection of herbs and vegetables as we strolled through the modern and well-maintained greenhouses. I picked up some fresh-off-the-vine kale/mustard leaves/radishes. The kale is one of three varieties this season, the mustard leaves are very spicy and I have yet to try the radishes. I am looking forward to some of the other plants I saw growing, like purple carrots (not the ubiquitous, man-made orange variety in grocery stores), onions, tomatoes, etc. Beyond the vegetables, the main building has fresh eggs (chicken and duck), humanely raised meats and plenty of other things we will be trying. The meat and egg prices seem a bit higher than grocery stores, but I think the quality is probably superior and the money stays local, which I prefer. You also get a small discount for bringing back egg cartons, whether they are from the Broad Run or not. The farm itself is just a beautiful, relaxing setting. There is a pond as well as many flowers and animals to admire.

So, let me tell you about Merrifield Garden centers. I have been to many many landscape and garden…read morecenters over the years. I know quite a few that have been put out of business because of the chain home improvement stores. When you go to Merrifield, you will be bathed in the amazing living variety that can be brought to your home, for indoors and outdoors. The selection is beyond anything I've ever seen, and the staff clearly loves the business. You can browse hundreds of plant and flower options indoors And they also have an amazing selection of patio adornments. The best was my experience today. I needed a garden hose adapter. Sounds simple enough, but this is so uncommon that all of the local chains didn't have anything, and one young man in an orange apron Ron suggested I just get it on Amazon. I stopped here at Merrifield, and they also did not have it in stock. But the gentleman at the counter Suggested that he'd be happy to make one for me if I wouldn't mind waiting for a few minutes. And he jumped into action, grabbing the hose and fittings that he needed and manufactured what I needed for me on the spot. That his old-fashioned service deserves a lot more than just five stars. Please bring them your business!

I've heard great things about Merrifield and though I've visited before, I hadn't bought anything. I took some pics of my lawn, some of the current grass/weeds/plants growing and went to their help desk. It was mid-week, so not too busy. Craig was working the desk and so I don't bury the lead... he was AMAZING. I explained what I was trying to do, that I really knew nothing, and though I had done a little research, I didn't want to trust everything I had read/watched. He walked me through my options. I don't care much about what is growing, just that we have good coverage. Clover was something I was interested in. He explained the clover options as well as some low-maintenance grass options. He even spent a lot of time helping me understand about aerating since it was something I wanted to know more about. I decided to go with grass and clover, hoping a mix might balance between lawn and something for the pollinators. As the spots were relatively small, he said I could just hand spread, especially with the clover seeds being so tiny. While prices are a little higher than the big box stores, looking into this, the products seem to be of a higher quality. Luckily my issue was sort of small to start with so I felt it was a good investment.
