The service at Village Diner was pretty good. We were assisted by two waitresses that were helpful. The food was decent. We had the California omelette, French toast, and the avocado salad (with grilled chicken). They do have a lot of options, so I may have not chosen what they excel in. The Diner is what you would expect from a typical small town cafe. Plenty of seats and table, but a little cramped. Overall, it was an ok experience. So yesterday, 2/5, my friend and I decided to have a burger at one of my favorite places. Unfortunately, it wasn't opening until 4. Set on having a burger and nothing else, we opted to dine at the Village Diner in South Orange, since the burger joint across the street didn't serve me a tasty burger the first time I visited, but I'll try them again some day. I was a bit put off by the fact that this diner is underneath the South Orange NJTransit Station. I was more put off that it looked a little bit like an old coffee shop more than a diner (sorry forgot to take photo). Dubious, we walked in thinking that our stomaches were going to pay the price later. We were told to pick a seat and the young waitress, with the Wednesday Adams smile (she did warm up a bit later on) brought out the menu. Friend and I bother ordered the Village burger, which was a combination of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onions, pickle and ranch dressing. I had fries and friend opted for onion rings. It also came with additional pickles and coleslaw (I didn't eat the coleslaw as I don't like it). I have to say that I was surprised at how good my burger was. I had read reviews and so I wasn't expecting much, but my burger tasted very good. I ordered a medium well burger and that's what received. It was fresh, the lettuce, onions and pickles were crisp and for those who love onions, it was much more than a few slices, so much that I had to remove some. I tasted my friend's onion rings and they were delish. The batter around them was seasoned well and crispy and the onions tasted fresh. All settled into my stomach without any issues. Service was good and the waitress, while not overly friendly, did try to crack a smile. She did her job well and did come around to ask if everything was ok. When not serving people, it was good to see that she was cleaning the tables. Would I return, sure, why not, for some eggs with extra crispy bacon. And, for the reviewer who gave one star because his bacon was crispy, there's no other way to have it. read more

Our food took a half hour to come out and it was wrong so we had to wait even longer for it to be fixed. How does that happen with two customers in the diner??? We ordered a tuna club, onion rings, and a side order of toast and two drinks. The girl who served us seemed really out of it. The kid who sat us was having a conversation on the phone with AirPods in. When we finished our food, the server didn't even clear our plates before giving us the check. She let the dirty plates sit there and asked me twice if I wanted a box even after I said "no thank you". Poor service really makes for a subpar dining experience. Our table was adjacent to Cold Stone so the smell of waffle cones kept wafting into my nostrils. Our server was nice though he was more scarce than he was available. No issues with take out, it was easy enough to order over the phone. I am a supporter of Village Diner's salads; you've got a spread to choose from, about 16! I've ordered the California Cobb salad ($11.50) and the Chef's salad ($11.50). They were fresh, huge, and filling. The Chef's salad contained deli meats like roast beef, ham, and turkey. I also tried the Athenian chicken wrap ($9.95) which was all right. Perhaps the Greek dressing was a tad on the bland side. But like the salads, the portion was more than generous, and the wraps all come with fries, cole slaw, and pickles. read more

Having preferred this diner's competitor across the street I gave Village diner a try as my friend and I only wanted cool drinks for a pleasant day. Compared to Chris's - the current competing diner - this one is spacious with more emphasis on tables vs. chris's booths. Village has the upperhand with outdoor seating on nice days which is cool. I wanted a shake and wanted to give this place a try over the other ice cream shops in town which could also get the job done. The shake took a real long time to get, I assume the girl doing it was new but there were a number of workers there and it was pretty dead, why not give her a hand? I patiently waited and finally got it and it wasn't too bad - my favorite cookies cream. It wasn't with too much cookie goodness though, but not bad. I'd consider another try here so I could see how the full service and meals are, and even better - perhaps eat outside. read more

I ordered a chocolate cake for desert. When it was delivered, I noticed some white spots in the frosting, so I asked to speak with a manager to express my concern. He assured me that it was nothing, but I wasn't convinced, so he gave me another slice. After eating some of it, I noticed that it, too, had some identical white spots in the frosting. Again, he insisted that the cake was fine; in fact, he said that he thought it was "condensed milk". Unconvinced, I asked him to remove the cake from my bill. Initially, he vociferously refused. After realizing that I wasn't going to pay for what appeared to be some kind of fungus on/in the frosting, he took the cake off of my bill. I had an occasion to come here for breakfast one day. It is homely and somewhat small. When I came on a Saturday at 10am, it wasn't busy but not empty either. The waiter was prompt and helpful. I noticed that there are complaints about the service, but I am happy I didn't experience that. The ambiance was underwhelming and not a typical diner, as I think of diners. However they did have the extensive menu, as is good custom diner fare. I enjoyed my meal of corn beef hash and eggs. Plenty food and no complaints at all. On 3/9 our waitress ruined what is usually a good experience at this diner. She came to take our order without giving us menus, didn't deliver one of the dinners and one of the sides,(we had to ask another waitress to track down the order because our waitress was no where to be found), never came to see that we were satisfied with our orders, never advised us that one of the items we ordered was unavailable, and then basically disappeared. We had to track down other employees to get drink refills, and the check. IF, we come here in the future, we will walk out if this woman is our waitress. A diamond on the corner. Occasionally, whenever I get my haircut, I diner at the Village. Always greeted and serviced up quickly. The diner is amongst a few small businesses in the area that I frequently patronize and this day was no exception. I had the classic cheese burger deluxe (fries, coleslaw and pickle). The name fits the place. It's a small diner right under the train station. Great for a quick bite to eat. I wouldn't recommend going their for a date type of night but it's def a good place to go for something quick and tasty. My cousins and I went there about 2 weeks ago. Food was good and quick. I had a very dry sandwich from this place. It was a grilled chicken sandwich and I recall the chicken was not very seasoned and the white bread was kind of stale and dry. Came here because my friend wanted to meet here for breakfast/brunch since it's close to her job. Parking is annoying because it's in a metered lot where you have to remember your parking lot space, walk over, input the space, and pay (I only wanted an hour but it went to three hours and wouldn't let me cancel and just took my money so I wasted $2 extra on parking than I wanted -which isn't much-but still annoying). Then you walk across to the diner. They seat you really quickly and the staff is super sweet and attentive. The décor is very rustic since it's under a train track which I actually really liked. But when it comes to food, it's subpar and pricier than any other diner. I got the hungry man where it comes with one waffle, 2 fried eggs, hashbrowns, and 4 bacon strips for $11 and then a strawberry smoothie for $6. Everything was medicore- could have made it at home LOL. Normally diners give big portions to the point where I can't finish but I finished everything and still felt a little hungry... Don't know if i'll be back since there are closer and better diners near me, but I guess if this is your closest diner, it's not bad. read more

ALLIE, the owner, is a terrible business woman.. we literally watched an elderly woman wait over 15 min for coffee and when she confronted Allie about it, Allie told her not to come on Sundays because it's too busy and she didn't have time.. when I confronted Allie about how she treated the woman she said "she's here every day, she's crazy"... I said "she's here every day and that's how you treat your regular customers?" Then Allie's husband came out and they tried to say that they're short staffed.. While I love where this diner is located, getting a parking spot turned out to be a bit of a challenge. Located under the South Orange NJ Transit station, the diner is located on the corner of the underpass. While it was constantly busy during the couple of hours we were there, it never seemed to have a line of people waiting. Upon entering, we were a bit confused because there is no one to greet customers and provide direction. Walking to the back where the register is located, we asked someone if we should seat ourselves, and they nodded. After choosing a table, the waitress came over pretty quickly, and we were soon presented with our food. We chose to have breakfast and my order of eggs over-easy with corned beef hash and rye toast came to the table still steaming. The coffee was good and hot but I wish there was more of it. I find their service to be lazy especially in recent events. I ordered a waffle for takeout and they gave me what was clearly a burnt waffle. I excused the matter after requesting another one. The next week I ordered the same thing...a waffle with ham. Instead, they gave me uncooked broken waffle pieces I'm convinced could've been picked up off the floor.
