This place is fantastic. If you're looking for authentic and hand crafted Mexican food, don't look farther. I truly appreciate the simplicity, yet bold flavor that they've clearly strived to deliver. I ordered a medium spicy, beef burrito. The meat was incredible, seasoned and flavorful. Each bite you get a hefty mouthful of whatever meat you choose complimented with rice, beans, salsa, and cheese. I'd say if you're good with spicy, go spicy, medium spicy was light. With that said, the burrito filled with flavor and not just loaded with lettuce or other fillings like you'd find at other Mexican style restaurants. You can tell they take pride in their meats and how they're prepared and give you a great serving. Also - they did a fantastic job pressing the burrito. Probably the worst burrito bowl I've ever had. They don't make it front of you (like most places do) so you can't tell them to go light or add more of anything. Barely any rice in my bowl, way too much lettuce (which I would've had them not include if I saw them making it). And the carnitas is very mediocre. On top of it, it is the most expensive place in the area to grab a burrito by far, and they even charge extra for sour cream. $18 for a burrito bowl is absurd, and when the result is as bad as this, I would never recommend anyone go here when there are much better places very close by. read more

The owner Mrs. King is the nicest, and the food is impeccable. All ingredients taste so fresh and everything is packed with flavor. Still the best mole and black salsa around, bar none. From their days in the gas station, to us mail-ordering their black salsa during the pandemic closures, to coming full circle and ordering their mole poblano recently which was huge and filling and exceptionally delicious and worth every penny at $19.99 (yes, seriously, I know it's expensive but it's quality and you're supporting a wonderful local family)- they just can't be beat, for taste or quality or friendliness. They are back open again after being closed for a few months. Staffing seems to have improved after having difficulty hiring during the pandemic. They are still running at a slightly decreased level though so there isn't quite a full menu offered and it is a good idea to call in orders for more than a couple items well in advance. That said, the burritos and salsa are as good as they have ever been, which definitely still rank as the best that I have had in the Boston area. My favorite is the chorizo burrito, ordered spicy. You get three different layers of heat from the chorizo, the salsa, and the spicy crema. I ordered my chicken mole burrito spicy with all the fixin's (white rice, black beans, cheese) for $8.99. After getting wrapped, the burritos are grilled, so the tortillas are nice and toasty. Absolutely love this! Mole isn't a standard option at Mexican places in Boston, so huge props for this. It's easy enough to order here and while it's not the same assembly line that you might see at a certain other chain burrito place, it's more deliciouser. As a Mexican-American, this was an affront to my taste buds. I will give them that they are short-staffed during the pandemic, but there are no excuses for the food + experience we had here. 1. The owner yelled at my friend for not giving her cactus salad to her staff to add cheese. No one told us we had to do that and you don't berate customers for it. Already unacceptable behavior FROM THE OWNER 2. She told us that if it happens again, let her know so "she can yell loudly at her staff." UM, NO mujer--you should never yell at your staff for your clear lack of preparation (or even if they are just new), especially if you have your shit together. 3. The steak burrito I got was disgusting, tasteless, bland, and offensive to Mexican-American culture. SO GROSS NEVER AGAIN! 4. My bottled soda was flat even though the seal was intact. 5. My office got catering from here for our Holiday Party two years in a row. Consistently excellent. Did a fun and tasty taco bar and quesadillas. Everyone raved. Dry carnitas, bland rice, and mushy black beans. At $9.50, I really wasn't interested in paying more for sour cream or guacamole, which may have helped. Hate leaving bad reviews... food is edible but not good. I got a burrito and all that was in it was fry chicken, rice, beans, and cheese... pretty sure it said something about pico or lettuce on the menu. I tried ordering two tacos originally, but she told me it was extra $5 to order different meats... I said ok same meat and she told me two tacos was $15. She said prices changed. I asked how much a burrito was and I switched to that. Lady before me was upset because they told her the total was 58 but when she got there it was 74. I don't think they are doing anything with bad intentions but there's clearly miscommunication on pricing/how to ring things up correctly on register. In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, two friends and I went to Villa Mexico for lunch. It was my first time there. It was *awesome*. The staff, particularly Momma King's daughter, were feeling stressed; I imagine that this is a *particularly busy* day for them, and the daughter was snapping at the staff and customers. I just stayed out of the way and enjoyed the show. When I made eye contact with some of the cooks, we'd just grin. We arrived at about 11:45, beating most of the rush, although there were about eight people waiting for their orders. One friend ordered a burrito bowl w/o rice, the other a burrito, and I ordered two tacos - the Tinga (shredded chicken in a smokey red chile sauce) and the Campechano (a combination of meats, probably beef and pork). The burrito took the most time to prepare, so plan accordingly. The burrito bowl was up the quickest, followed by my tacos. We all enjoyed our meals. I thought the tacos were *excellent*. Full of fresh ingredients and flavor. I liked them even more because they are $3.99 each on Fridays, instead of $5.99 like every other day. Oh, and as the other reviewers have noted, Momma King is the best. She was warm and welcoming, joyful, genuine, and dear. Hands down the best Mexican food I've had in Boston. I can't remember the last time I was compelled to write a review but this stuff is just that good. I'm baffled by the low reviews. Everyone who works there is so nice, and it's obvious there's a great deal of pride and love in every dish they serve. I accidentally showed up after hours one afternoon and was served some incredible stuffed peppers and an "experimental sauce" made with grilled poblanos. They were working on the sauce to use for the special the following week, and let me tell you, it was divine. I still think about that meal sometimes... TRY THE SALSA! I waited beside a sweet lady who had a large order that she called ahead for and it wasn't even started when she showed up. I proceeded to watch in awe as large lunch rush of 20-30 people showed up, placed their orders, and received it before she did. Absolutely ridiculous!! I even noticed the employees were cursing her in Spanish and overcharging her for chips & guac. Her order was well over $100 and she was visibly upset. Ordered the "Burrito with the works" with "mole poblano chicken" and "spicy" heat level. Pretty good. I especially love the grilled tortilla! Thats pretty rare especially for a lunch burrito. I would go again, but would try a different protein; the chicken was finely shredded, and I don't like that. Additionally, the heat level was present but rather mild so keep that in mind. I'm also happy to say that I emerged without being scolded, which I was genuinely anxious about from reading the recent spate of reviews. Hopefully that experience continues. read more

Haven't written a review in a while, but wanted to share some praise for Villa Mexico. The owner was working the register and she was extremely warm and friendly to all patrons. They certainly gave off the impression that they appreciated everyone's business. Most places I go to, the employee behind the register is high on fentanyl, so this was a welcome surprise. The food itself was more authentic style than American style, so if that's your jam (and you work on State Street), Villa Mexico will be your home away from home. I tend to prefer the more Gringo style (tons of melted cheese, sour cream, and creamy guac), so Villa Mexico won't rank as my all-time favorite; but it's noteworthy none-the-less. Bonus points for being the only place I know of where you can get mole sauce on your burrito. Do note that there is a $10 minimum to use a credit card. Since they apparently don't teach math in public schools any more, I'll give you some pointers. First, if you go with another person, you can put your combined order on a single credit card. If you are going by yourself, you can buy a bag of chips, a bottled drink, or even request an additional topping for your burrito, which will put your order over $10. This works using an ancient Chinese arithmetic operation known as "addition". I do work on State Street and am vehemently opposed to Buloco, so I'll definitely be back. I saw this place on an article on best new restaurants of 2016 in Boston, and this one was one of the more affordable places and also walking distance from work. The place is small, so once you order, you might need to wait outside for a bit until they call your order since it's already pretty packed with people waiting in line to order. Even though it's a tiny place, it's very colorful and you get a homey Mexican vibe. We got a few tacos, a carnitas burrito and a beef tamale. The tamale was very okay, a little dry. they grilled the burritos so the tortilla is crispy which I loved, but the flavor in the burrito wasn't outstanding to me although it's a huge portion. This four-star review has three items on its agenda. Number 1 - The Food. I'd say generally adequate food quality. Portion sizes vary by menu item. A burrito here has the girth of young melon. You will be left comatose for the entire afternoon. The tacos, however, come in pairs and are hardly filling. I would recommend not getting the fish tacos, which are dry and could use more lime. Number 2 - The Service. Friendly, quick service here. Especially from "Mama King", the owner who commands the kitchen from her perch behind the register. As an A.R.M. It sure is a great time to be working in the Financial District of Boston area if you like Mexican food. Steadily, we've been getting more options for burritos and tacos and mexican lunch options, and Villa Mexico Cafe is one of the latest to join the fray, and is in my opinion the most authentic of the bunch. Owned by the very friendly "little mexican woman" with a long history of mexican restaurants, the food here is high quality and have good portion sizes. Its the only burrito place in Boston that i've been to that has a Mole Poblano burrito, a sweet and spicy chocolate tinged sauce with chicken, and it is delicious. A bit of a mess as a burrito though. Getting it in a burrito bowl is much neater and better imo. They also have breakfast options and mexican sweet bread. If you come during lunch hour, be prepared to wait, but worth it if you have a hankering for quality mexican food. read more

I've been searching for a good Mexican restaurant in Boston for a long time now...and all I can say is WOW, I finally found it. My trip to Anna's Taqueria was really disappointing so I was excited to try this place. Villa Mexico is extremely small--its basically a counter with a few window seats, but if you can take it to go or hunker up to a small seat, you're golden. The quality of the products are excellent--good spices, and flavorings--and they grill the tortillas, rather than steaming them like other restaurants do (yuk!). I had a burrito with carnitas and chorizo and it was fabulous! I'll try the quesadilla or mole next time. The only complaint I have is that they need a water station, especially when serving spicy food. All the food looks good. You'll love this place, try it! read more

I have long awaited the reopening of Villa Mexico, and made sure to get there for their opening day. Their new location in the Financial District means a lot of good competition, but I still feel like they stack up against the best of them. I know some friends haven't been thrilled with the chicken, but I've never gotten the chicken. In my mind, their Mole and Carnitas have always been some of the best of their kind. For the opening, I bought the Mole and was thrilled with the decision. Very rich flavors, moist and delicious. Their salsa is also some of the best I've ever had. If you think all salsa is 90% tomatoes and onions, you'd be wrong, there are many kinds, and I think the uniqueness of Villa Mexico's salsa is what keeps me coming back. Charred peppers with some great spices, it may not look great, but it tastes fantastic. I can't wait to go back again, especially as they get more into the swing of things, going from operating not a ton of business in a gas station on beacon hill, to a jam-packed restaurant in the extremely busy Financial District. read more

I'm very happy to see Villa Mexico is back in business after moving from their last location. Although they've only been open a week and are still getting the hang of things (including the busy Financial District lunch crowd), the staff remains as friendly and positive as ever. Julie and her team have put their heart and soul into opening this new location and it shows. The burritos are massive! Expect to skip dinner. They also offer occasional fun sides like golden flan and tres leches cake. I look forward to trying out some new things on their menu, as well as sticking to the old favorites like their famous charred salsa. Chicken burrito was big (5 stars) but expensive (3 stars) and tasted just ok....not any better than what you'll find at similar style restaurants (2 stars). Woman at the cash register wouldn't allow me to charge $9.62 for a burrito because it was below the $10 minimum. When I questioned not putting it through (we're talking 38 cents!!) she no problem I'll charge you $10. That was annoying. I understand the rational for minimums, but $10 is too high and their no exception policy is ridiculous. This place is way overrated. I had the chicken burrito was it was way below average. There is barely any cheese on there and the chicken is very dry and stringy. If you want good Mexican, try Sabroso Tacqueria which is just a few blocks away. Honestly, I prefer eating at Chipotle to Villa Mexico. I work directly across the street from this place so I go there, on average, once a week, so I know what my food is supposed to taste like. Instead of just accepting that they gave me the wrong burrito, the rude old lady started to argue with me that I don't know what I just took a bite out of. The bottom line is that I asked for mild mole, this was so spicy, my mouth is still burning 10 minutes later. The guy after me ordered one extra spicy and they mixed it up - it wouldn't have been a big deal, had they just taken ownership of the situation. Being "right" was more important to them, though, so I'll never go back. Also, their taquitos are so bland, they are practically cardboard. The only thing I've ever actually liked was their mole burrito (I've tried everything on the menu). My issue, primarily, is with the attitude though. I wanted my burrito yesterday but the owner's mother running the register was so nasty to the people in front of me in line that I walked out without ordering. I've given Villa Mexico it's fair share of chances but I've been disappointed every time. The first time I ordered a veggie burrito with guacamole (additional $1.25 even with a veggie order) for a total of about $11. The burrito was huge and I liked how the tortilla was grilled, but it was so flavorless and so wet and mushy that it barely held together. The little scoop of guacamole was only on one end so I ate all of it in my first bite, and the vegetables chosen were very odd - broccoli and carrots? I went back again to try the carnitas burrito but I had the opposite problem - it was incredibly dry. Further, the only discernible flavor was pork - nothing else, I couldn't taste the salsa or the beans. It got old after a few bites. I'm disappointed that I don't love it, but going forward I'll stick to several other nearby spots. read more
