This is now my 3rd time at Cactus Grill and they don't disappoint! I went for the first time in the summer and went back the same day because it was delish. It's a very homey vibe right when you enter and you order first and then pay. For food, we ordered the steak burrito, pupusas, beef stew, and chicken stew. The burrito was GINORMOUS it was literally heavy. The pupusas were super fresh and cheesy but a bit greasy. The beef stew is my favorite. The meat is so tender and I love the stew broth with rice. Unfortunately, the chicken stew wasn't as good but the meat is still tender and more on the tomato side. Everyone here is so kind and there's a great community of people! Ok, I only tried the cow tongue taco - topped will all they had to offer, but that one taco was the best I've ever had in the area (to date). Tongue isn't the easiest protein to get right, it can be tough, but they made it perfectly and it had a nice char. Eat here. Try it out. Other things that were good: pupusas, deep fried burrito, rice, beans. It's a small space, maybe a table or two, but I'd recommend it for take-out. They have a couple of TVs playing sports. There are some chairs along the side and one larger table in the back that you may be lucky enough to get a seat at depending on what time you go. Stopped by for a quick bite. Found some street parking in the area a block away from the restaurant. Establishment has a pretty short menu, and some indoor seats. Tacos were pretty standard but I do think they give you a nice portion of protein with each serving. Service was also very quick. They have all sorts of meat and other dishes displayed in a buffet style and I ordered a beef stew rice platter. This is definitely a central and south American neighborhood spot with menus in English and Spanish, a television tuned to one of the Spanish language news channels and a menu with all sorts of south-of-the-border styled foods. My tortillas did come from a packet and then grilled but the toppings were fresh. I had them all the way, one chicken, one beef and one pork. Loaded up with salsa and guac and sour cream and onions and tomatoes and then cilantro, they were awesomely tasty. Loaded to the max. Yum! The restaurant is definitely NOT fancy. When someone doesn't charge extra for guacamole in a burrito, you know they have a good heart. The food here is good, the portions are huge, the prices are very fair, and the people are friendly. However, I have found that the food tends to give me indigestion and heartburn after eating, to the point that I go here far less often than I would otherwise. (It would be a thrice-a-week place for me otherwise.) If you've been eating here and don't have that problem, then great, consider this a five star review. But if you've eaten here, had indigestion but not put 2 and 2 together, consider this a piece of evidence. But certainly do give it a try. The price and flavor are definitely worth it. read more

Was staying in the airport hotel with a couple of friends and we were looking for a place to eat within walking distance. Cactus was bustling with people even at the late hour we came in, and we waited in line for a few minutes before our order was taken very quickly at the counter. The cashier was very sweet and personally brought each of our orders to us once they were complete. The food itself was made to order and quite sizable; I got the enchiladas so I had to wait a bit longer, but my friend who got a salad received hers right away. My one complaint would be the lack of seating inside the restaurant, as we had to stand awkwardly around while we waited. Our food was delicious even after the chilly walk back to the hotel - no issues with any of the orders, and everyone in my party loved the taste. My enchiladas were great but were covered in a thick layer of cheese that had solidified by the time we got back to our hotel... oops. Nothing a quick microwave couldn't fix. Do not eat here restaurant is dirty order a bowl of food today and when I was done eating I noticed there was a dead cockroach . I feel sick and unwell and it's disgusting to me that the cooks didn't check before handing the food out . I've never had a good vegetarian burrito. Most places just stuff a regular burrito with school cafeteria veggies (carrots, broccoli) and call it a day. Cactus Grill does that too, but it tastes freaking amazing. I have no idea how; maybe they grill their veggies or something. This place is a joke! The menu scanner outside the business has a set of prices and the inside another. The server brought chips that were completely stale. They had to be from the previous day. It was only 11:30 AM, so they should have been freshly made. The chilaquiles were supposed to be red, but the were more like yellow with some sort of salsa that tasted canned. Are you really hungry but not willing to spend more than $10 on food? This place may have your answer. Located in one of the biggest Hispanic neighborhoods in the somewhat decent city of Boston, I went here with a group of friends after doing some exploring of the East Boston area, and I thought I found another great deal that can definitely get your stomach really full. For an unbelievable price of $10, I got a large steak "chimichanga", with rice, guacamole, and beans, along with a chicken taco. After eating all of that, I was really full and my stomach was fairly happy. The tacos are really good and probably one of the tastiest tacos I have eaten so far in Boston. I liked the texture of the tortilla used. It had a nice chewiness. The chicken, onions, combined with the guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo made the taco tastier than the tacos you probably would get at a Mexican restaurant in Boston. The tacos are definitely 5 times better and tastier than Taco Bell's tacos, and they definitely do NOT use those really hard, and overly crunchy pre-made U-shaped taco shells that you see in "Americanized tacos". These tacos are fairly inexpensive, about $2 per taco, and I think 3 of them should be enough to feed a hungry person. Chimichangas are these deep fried burritos. What I like is that they really fill up the Chimichanga with a lot of beef and cheese. I thought I had the tastiest Chimichanga so far. I liked the crisp and chewy texture on the outside, and the warm chewy beef along with the gooey cheese on the inside. Rice and beans were decently good. The guacamole provided made the chimichanga and the rice tastier, and the good part is that this place does not charge extra for guacamole, unlike other Mexican food take away places. The pico de gallo is also tasty as well. This place is at a really good location. It is near the Maverick stop off the MBTA Blue Line, which is probably the best subway line Boston can offer. It is also one stop away from the airport, in case you need to escape from this city and go to better places, like San Francisco, Paris, London, Rome, or even Toronto. I think it is authentic, I heard a good amount of Spanish spoken by not just the staff but also the clientele. Overall, I think I have found the some of the tastiest Mexican food in the somewhat decent city of Boston, and $10 should be enough to get your stomach really full at this place. I just started venturing around Eastie and I'm so glad I did. I stumbled upon Cactus Grill because of its proximity to Maverick T station and was skeptical at first because of the amount of Mexican restaurants surrounding the area. That skepticism went clear out the roof once I stepped inside the restaurant. The vibes are amazing. Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and chatty; it was experience within itself to just order. I love practicing my Spanish and felt completely comfortable to do so there. Now onto the most important part; the food! I got myself a ensalada con pollo y todo (see, I'm even practicing now!). The shell to the salad was crispy and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend got a burrito and he said it was one of the most delicious burritos he's ever had. Not to mention the price of this place is absolutely unbeatable. Long story short: Just moved to East Boston, been poking around the neighborhood, discovering my affinity for Anna's in Brookline represented just a drop in the bucket of my possible love of Eastie cuisine. Having stuck my head in a few establishments roughly the size of a Buick, I was this close to deciding those were the best spots for wonderful cheap spicy food... and then I gave Cactus Grill a chance, after having avoided it for fear that the sleekest signage in Maverick Square would mean less authentically delicious food. Oh, MAN, I had it all wrong. The spread they have set up behind the counter basically functions like a salad bar full of meat and carbs: a big heap of yellow rice and beans, maybe some fried yucca, one of those incredibly juicy roast chicken breasts (which is actually more like half the damn bird), a bit of spicy, vinegary slaw, a few tortillas, oh, and throw in one of those green things, I'm still figuring out what everything is. There's also steaks and grilled shrimp and fried chicken and chicarrón and lengua and all sorts of things to test your Maverick mettle. Granted, they may be out of certain items depending on what time of day you're there, but they'll gladly compensate by slingin' you a few extra pieces of other things you ordered (and by that I mean once again as many as you'd otherwise get) to make up for it. Of course, if you're intimidated by the massive selection at the line, they've got a menu board, but I'm really not quite sure what the point of it is, since the prices seem to fluctuate every time I'm there. The same massive steak-centered plate cost me ten dollars one day and six the next. The best thing to do is remember who you ordered from on a previous visit and make a bee-line for them when you get in the door.
