At Cafeteria La Reina, I sampled three pupusas, which have various types of fillings encased in a fried corn patty. The pupusas were made to order and arrived after a ten-minute wait. First impressions upon seeing the 7" patties were that three was definitely too much for lunch and I should have went with one or two at most. I tried the cheese with loroco, with zucchini, and with pork. Being a meat-loving gal, the chicharron (pork) was my favorite while the queso made for a good breakfast the following day. The pupusas come with curtido (vinegar-based slaw) and salsa roja. Both were very flavorful and added much to the dish. The salsa cut through the fattiness of the pork and fried pupusa nicely while the curtido provided some needed crunch in addition to the acidity. I had gotten my meal to go and so the sides were packaged in two plastic bags that were tied in a knot at the top. While this was fine for the curtido, it made it pretty difficult to pour the watery salsa in a controlled manner and I ended up spilling half all over the pupusas. All put together, one to two pupusas would be more than enough for lunch making this great cheap eats at ~$3/pupusa. read more

This place was such a pleasant experience. We went for valentines because we wanted pupusas and didn't want something pretentious and also hadn't made reservations. This is one of the best dining experiences I've had in Boston though, and I drive out to east Boston just to go here sometimes. read more

Very good Salvadorian food although a bit overshadowed by the fact that it is in a square next door to quite a few comparably great places. A lot of takeout coming in and out of here as well, although I've never seen La Reina very crowded with seated patrons. I've only had the pupusas, which are excellent, although service is pretty slow and can take a while even when the restaurant is empty. A bit of a language barrier, and most of the menus are in Spainish as well, but there are ample pictures and staff is pretty good at the point and nod. Loud music combined with constant, loud television running in the background makes for a bit of a headache. The restaurant has a jukebox as well which is a fun touch. Definitely recommend for the pupusas, but there are better options for a full dinner / meal in the area. read more

This small restaurant located on Bennington St. is really a hidden gem! I was in the area and craving pupusas and gave it a try and it was the best I've had! There is many Salvadorian/Mexican restaurants in the area which I have given a chance and tried but by far this is the best! I went ahead and ordered "antojitos la reina" which brings a pupusa of your choice, taco of your choice as well as a tamal of your choice! I have often fought with my Texan friends that indeed we do have delicious and authentic Latin food up in Boston, which I argue is at times better than I have found in Texas. No joke. If anyone questions it, I take them to La Reina, a small, simple restaurant tucked away in East Boston just outside the airport. This place is as authentic as it gets. It is a mix of Mexican and Salvadoran food, and the menu includes things like Carne Asada (grilled steak), pupusas (tortillas with cheese or meat stuffing), plantains, soups, tamales, grilled chicken, and empanadas. Everything is fresh and very well made. The portions are massive and the prices are much lower than you would expect to pay. Breakfast at La Reina is one of my favorites. Dishes include eggs, steak, plantains, cream, beans, chicharrones, and tortillas. Also, no matter what meal you're there for, ask for a licuado (smoothie), the strawberry is exquisite. Many of the staff there speak only Spanish (hey you wanted authentic). Don't speak Spanish? Not a problem. There are many English-only patrons and each item on the menu is accompanied by a picture and a translation. It won't be difficult to navigate. This place is by far my favorite Latin American restaurant in the area. Here, you get the real deal. None of that "Mexican" food covered in melted cheese and refried beans. INCREDIBLE. Incredible everything. First of all, the food was out of this world. If you're looking for the best pupusas and tacos ever, you should probably come here. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and the flavors worked so well together. The service was, like the food, incredible. They took COVID-19 guidelines seriously and were more than happy to accommodate us and bring our takeout order outside. This restaurant made us feel at ease during a pandemic which is a pretty hard thing to do! I can't wait to come back to this amazing restaurant :) read more

Great food. The authenticity of the restaurant really makes the experience worthwhile. The Pupusas are by far the best in the Boston area, hand made from scratch every morning, and I happened to watch the process one morning while grabbing breakfast. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant and I went with a friend and her child, first of all not apropriate for kids, too many drunk, lound rude guys, they were swearing and we felt so unconfurtable. over the top prices i almost fell of my chair when they gave us the bill. we had been to other spanish restaurants ordered the same amount of food and we never had to pay so much. I ordered soup it was call mondongo, I've try this soup in other restaurants and here in LA Reina restaurant the soup had a funky stinky smell, I could tell that the tripe was not clean corectly, i could smell the tripe in other restaurant you don't smell the tripe because they clean it good, here it was stinky could not drink it, it grossed me out, money wasted, my friend ordered fried cheese sticks with other stuff can't remember, but everything was overcooked almost burned. gross. If you don't want to over pay for your food, and likes to go to restaurant with your kids I DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant. so sorry LA Reina. read more
