I've walked past this restaurant numerous times walking down Victoria Avenue in Chatswood and I've…read morewondered if its any good. We've been here about 3 times and every time it's been great. They have a unique treat called 'Onigiri', which is a traditional type of Sushi thats in a triangle - the thing about it is that the way it is wrapped, the seaweed wrapper never touches the rice/filling, which results in a very fresh and crispy wrapper. They come in various flavours, and if you want to try some I would advise getting there before 7pm (as there is limited stock). The Ramen is great. Beware their 'Volcano' hot ramens as they are very spicy. The 'Volcano' was too much for my gf who prides herself on being able to eat hot foods... and I have no idea how someone can have the 'Super Volcano' variant. I really enjoy their Waygu Beef Curry Udon, which is really tasty. Their other dishes are good too; the Agadashi tofu is great, crispy and soft with delicious sauce. Gyoza was tasty. I would recommend trying it if you are looking for Japanese in Chatswood.

Maybe throw in a few of those preserved eggs, they've gotta be good for your skin, right? I've eaten here maybe three times and each time I've had company, but I'm saving one particular menu item for when I come here alone: the Volcano Ramen, a super spicy extra hot-to-trot bowl of glowing vesuvian goodness. Cannot. Wait.

There's a self serve kiosk to order and pay, then you scan a number barcode and sit down. It was all a really simple procedure and I like the concept. Once I sat down and got situated, the food came out almost instantaneously and looked glamorous. All the rice soaked up the juices of the fatty, succulent pieces of pork; and it was absolutely delectable. Never a boring bite!

Every time I walk down Victoria Ave in Chatty I eye off Bao Dao like a pretty girl in nightclub. I…read moresidle past and give her the sideways-glance, the one I hope is coy but probably just looks creepy. She sees me looking, too. She pulses and glows, and sends wafts of pungent perfume drifting down the street to envelop me in her heady musk. Finally ate there last night. Was fresh from the gym, cricket training and no lunch, and was so famished I coulda eaten the eyes out of a dead camel. I was barely coherent by this point. I just needed food, tasty food, and a table full of it. Bao Dao delivered. In spades. Big ones. Cheap ones. Hot, steaming, spicy, delicious ones. You order off a big plastic picture menu, there's a ton of small-sized dishes at ridiculous prices - most everything is between $4 and $7, with sides around $3. So you just point at about a thousand things that look good and 5 minutes later you're heffing in like John Goodman at a buffet. I don't like to blow my own horn (unless I'm alone and something with Mandy Moore is on TV), but I ordered the $hit out of that place. Everything that came was epic, from the pulled pork with sweet peanut rolls to the oily lamb broth to the fried coriander chicken to the suuuuper spicy dumplings with pickled cucumber to the pork sauce rice with century egg. Guh. Getting giddy just thinking about it. So go. Try. The Taiwanese girl is waiting. She wants you inside her.

Grape Garden is the definition of a hidden gem. Tucked away at the back of the food court on the…read moreground floor of Lemon Grove shopping centre, it's the kind of place you'd have to have a recommendation for to find out about. The menu is written entirely in Chinese, but the super friendly owner advised my friend and I what he thought would be best for us to order. For just $14 in total, we dined on handmade pork soup dumplings (13 of them in total, the owner kept reminding us) served in a giant bowl of broth, salty and scattered with spring onions. There was also a serving of shallot pancake, which was kind of like a savoury, thin-but-cakey, fried flat bread with a spicy chilli oil on the side. Old mate also threw in a little dish of shredded steamed chicken with cucumber ribbons in a rich sesame sauce. Plonking yourself down at a laminate table with a cafeteria tray for lunch isn't exactly glamorous, but it's hard to complain when the food is so good and so cheap.

I always knew…read moreit was there but just put it off thinking "next time... next time...", thinking somewhere else would be better, but there has not been anywhere better than this in Chatswood!! The fish dumplings were divine, and I could not praise them enough. Exactly how I like my dumplings and just sad that I could probably finish off two servings by myself and still crave more. Dumpling craving has been unleashed and cannot be satiated nooo! Not only were the dumplings amazing, you're not going to regret the noodles either. I think the noodles themselves have been salted so the broth doesn't have to do all the work, but honestly speaking the soup pulls its own weight and more. With vinegar in the mix, it's so refreshing and delicious, there'll be nothing left in the bowl once you're done with it. To top this all off, service is spot on! There's an awesome guy working there who not only has a great sense of humour but is also incredibly switched on. When I was ordering the vegetable noodles he made sure to ask if chicken stock was okay. And they do have another stock available for vegetarians. Also, we were spending a bit of time oohing and aahing over the sides but were short a couple of dollars. He picked up on it and asked which one we were looking at, and gave us a plate to try for free! Definitely going back!!
