Vietnamese crispy pancake
Lizzy M.

Hidden away in one of the side streets seats this small place. Easy to get to directions from Yelp. We lucked out and got there right before the evening rush and were able to get a pick at our table. The hosts were very nice and attentive without being bothersome. I got the vermicelli with beef. Really large bowl ensured I left full. The vermicelli was cooked nicely and the beef was seasoned well. The meat felt soft and fresh but cooked to perfection without drying it out. We also ordered a traditional crispy pancake as an appetizer. It was pretty much a large crispy Vietnamese taco, lol. My husband ordered a pho bowl and a Vietnamese coffee. We left satisfied with the service and the flavors and presentations of the dishes. If I'm the area, I would come back here again.

A lovely surprise! A really pleasant experience, delicious food and great service. Suiving ambiance and good proportions. They don't sell alcohol tho. Would definitely go back.

Pho and Spring Rolls.

Delicious pho. It was the perfect broth to knock out a developing cold after a week long of fun in Edinburgh.

Fresh Spring Rolls.

An unexpected find in Edinburgh, and even better that it was just down the street from where we stayed. We ended up here a couple of times during our stay in Edinburgh, and the food quality was good both times, but there was a huge difference in service. It's more important to me that a place has great food, which is what my rating reflects. I would have given the service during our first visit a 3 or 4 stars and a 1 or 2 stars during the second visit. However, the staff was really trying, they are just short staffed. The place is small and they do take reservations, so I recommend making one. If you go earlier, the service will be better because they do struggle when they get busy. I'm a creature of habit when it comes to food and when I find something I like, I'll continue to order it, so while we went twice, we only sampled the Fried Spring Rolls, Fresh Spring Rolls, Pho w/ Beef and Fried Noodles w/ Seafood. All of it was delicious, which is why I had the same thing on the subsequent visit to the restaurant. This is definitely a place I will return to when I'm in Edinburgh again.

Spring rolls - recommended

Been there twice. First time I had the classic Pho - highly recommended. My boyfriend's drumsticks curry (sorry I forgot the exact name - see the attached pic) was equally good. Spring rolls and coffee were very impressive! However on my second visit, the curry that I ordered was just mediocre and wasn't worth the price.

A bit dark... Vietnamese Noodles with Seafood!
Sara C.

NOMNOMNOMNOM Well, this was delicious, and I must say that I commend the waitress for controlling our greedy guts. We are the type of office that has a 'birdtable' we all eat off of constantly, if we see food we will eat it. When we tried to order an extraordinary number of rolls for starters the waitress decided that she would bring them in smaller numbers and not allow any more be cooked until we had finished that batch. We needed this kind of control, we are weak, we would have eaten every single one if she had put them in front of us! I tried both the fresh and the fried spring rolls. Both were delicious, the fresh came with peanut sauce and was like eating the sea (I'm no poet, give me a break!) and the fried came with a spicy sauce that complimented the meaty contents really well. I had the Vietnemese Noodles with Seafood for my main and it was delicious. I enjoyed every bite. I was worried there would be too much aniseed but the taste was perfect, for me who has had Vietnamese food only a handful of times. The waitress is a gem, that's all I'll say.

Noodle Soup with Beef
Joey A.

Wow, I did not see that coming! An immediate new entry into Joey's Top 5 Edinburgh Eats, Pho Vietnam had been on my radar for a while, and the reason my workmates and I chose the venue was because we had pub quiz winnings of a bottle of vodka and a crate of beer to share. But I did not expect the sheer quality of the food on display here. The first positive sign was that as a BYoB, Pho Vietnam did not have any limits. Many BYoBs tend to apply that rule specifically to wine, but we rocked up with a litre of Smirnoff and they didn't bat an eyelid. No problemo. The menu is modestly small, offering only two starters, both of which a variation of Spring Roll; the Fresh veggie option served with Peanut Sauce, or the crispier Fried alternative, stuffed (and I do mean stuffed!) with meat and served with sweet chilli sauce. Both were fantastic, large in body and a generous 4 rolls per helping, but the winner (of course) was the meat option. Next I chose the Braised Pork in Caramel Sauce with boiled rice. A fantastically rich and sweet dish, supernova moreish and so so succulent, with ingredients such as star anise included in the thick sauce. But Joey being Joey didn't stop there, and I managed to attract a taster of several other dishes around the table. The winning dish of the night was Linda C's Catfish. Absolutely epic course and without doubt my next choice when I go back. Rachel's Chicken with Fried Rice was the best chicken fried rice I've ever had, and Sinead's Chicken Curry looked like a subtle korma, but delivered and amazing punch of heat. There was no loser in the food stakes. Everything was gorgeous. The venue is tiny, to the point you need to pass through the middle of the kitchen to get to the toilet. This only makes it a rarity and I hope they do enough business to expand in the same vein as Kampung Ah Lee, there's no reason why they shouldn't because the quality of food here is tough to beat. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality offered. I only hope they do expand so they can also enhance their menu (the limited space I think must contribute to the limited selection). In the meantime I am happy to go back again and again and work my way through that delectable menu. Winner winner, chicken dinner!

While I have had pho from Saigon to Hanoi, and am a therefore a little hard to please, I'm more comparing this to other asian food I've had in the UK and US. Even by those standards it is pretty weak. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue - a fabulously rich and spicy beef soup from Hue in central Vietnam. The noodles were tough and bland, and the soup, while well spiced, seemed to lack the depth of flavor that I've come to expect from Pho. Would maybe go again to try the bahn mi or other options.

The flavor is drastically off and the ingredients used to make their pho are totally different. However, IF you are into a fusion form of Pho, take a chance and try this place out. I, clearly, wasn't a fan of the pho here. The noodles had this weird earthy taste while the broth lacked the flavor of beef. The broth was on the sweet side and clearly made to suit western tastes. Coming from Los Angeles, I was really surprised how the dish I had was called pho. However, the ONE thing I did like about the pho was that the beef they used was high quality and tasted amazing. The beef was juicy and tender, as if it would melt in your mouth! Service is dodgy. The servers here offer you service based on what you look like and how you dress. When my friend tried to order her dish while I was in the restroom, the waiter apparently told her "Not now I'm busy". However, when I called him over after returning from the restroom, it seemed as if the gold chain on my neck turned me into a "vip" client. He quickly took my order and apologized to my friend for his error. My personal experience with the service is good, but others might have it differently. On a side note, it seems like my friends really like their stir fried rice noodles. I have yet to try that--but from what I heard they are DELICIOUS.

If you have eaten PHO in more authentic places like Little Vietnam in Los Angeles, San Francisco,…read moreToronto, and Orange County (I have)...then don't eat here. The Pho is not authentic. It is picture pretty but that is about it. This place was recommended by our friend's 25 year old kid (whose palette is still young). The decor is beautiful and the inside is cozy and intimate. I ordered the seafood pho. It had no depth to it. It was missing that umami flavor. The broth was watery. It was missing the mint and the Thai basil. I ordered it #2 spicy and it was not spicy at all. We asked for some Fish sauce and they had no idea what we were talking about (which should have been a red flag) so then we asked for Hoisin sauce and they didn't have that either, they offered us soy sauce and we accepted that. Anything to bring some flavor to our pho. They ran out of chicken and (the night was still young) so my friend had to order the beef pho. He said his was okay- this was his first time having pho so he had nothing to compare it to. The service was mediocre. We had to ask them to bring us utensils. We had to ask them again to bring us napkins. It took them forever to ask us what we wanted to drink after they sat us down. To be honest, it was overpriced for the quality of food that was served. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic pho in Glasgow. This is a very instagram/influencer spot for pretty food pics/decor and that's about it. I would not go back.

All where delicious. I also really enjoyed the Pho. Ratings can be hysterical - because everyone likes different types of Pho. One woman said the Pho is SO salty. And another guys claims its bland. (people are strange). Yet, I found it delicious. I ate downstairs on all of my trips and enjoyed that for lunch. Will def visit this for lunch again on my next visit.

The prices are pretty crazy. This is about as prime real estate as you can get in Edinburgh, I'd imagine: less than a block from the Our Dynamic Earth attraction, barely a block from the Scottish Parliament buiding, just a block or two from the Royal Mile (and Holyrood Palace), and so on. Chicken pesto panini was great--plenty of marinated chicken and mozzarella, fine basil pesto, terrific bread. Only quibble is that the whole production was somewhat dry. There were something like 15 panini choices, so just about everybody ought to find something to their liking. No seating in the little shop, but you wouldn't want to eat here anyway. It was infernally hot inside (felt like 90 degrees F, Christ), and I don't know how the staff makes it through an entire shift. But the gardens at the parliament building are only a couple of minutes' walk away, and Holyrood Park just beyond that. In good weather, that's where you want to go. It was perfect lunch break for a massive urban walk that included the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill, and on back to the other side of Dean Village where we were staying.
