I have been stressing out over my 2018 taxes way before 2018 was even over. LOL.. It was my first…read moreyear of electing as an S-Corp. Majority of my income was coming in under my business with no taxes being deducted so I knew I had to pay. I was pretty sure i was going to owe like 10k :( .. I chose OG bc of the great reviews (thanks yelp!) Before going in I was actually nervous and a bit ashamed bc as an adult I have know idea about taxes yet I decided to elect as an S-Corp lol. Then I finally came in & was seen by Eli. Here are some highlights of my experience: Eli is very knowledgable and is able to explain everything easily so that people like me who feel like taxes are a foreign language can understand. I came in assuming I was going to owe so much bc I had no idea what I was doing or how taxes even worked.. but Eli answered all of my questions with patience even though I know I was probably asking the same question over & over lol. Now for 2019 I will not be stressed! Eli also shed some light on things I had no idea about like how putting money in an IRA can really help to save on how much I owe in taxes, and how I need to go ahead & pay estimated taxes twice a year, and other business related matters that as business owner i needed to know & did NOT beforehand. Before your appointment they give you this great "tax planner".. it pretty much lists out everything that you can & should be writing off on your taxes & allows you to put in the totals. This was so helpful.. it really helps you organize everything. I called with a question & was quickly directed to Eli which was nice bc I thought I was going to have to email or wait for a call back, etc.. Jane at the front desk is also very helpful, polite & accommodating. Overall, I highly recommend. Especially if you have no idea what you're doing bc I know I cant be the only one. I left feeling so much better & at ease after it was all over.

In New Jersey anyone can become a tax preparer with just a $20 IRS PTIN - no education, no test, no license needed. A true CPA must complete 150 college credits, pass a 16 hour exam, complete a year of supervised training, and pass an ethics course I mistakenly assumed Lou was a CPA based on the firm's name. Unfortunately that mistake cost me: * He made THREE major errors on my return (all later confirmed by an actual CPA). * It took nearly a month for them to even acknowledge my first email. * I had to research tax code myself and feed it back to them to prove their mistakes. * When I finally spoke to his daughter, Michelle (who was working on my return despite my appointment being with Lou), she became aggravated and hung up on me. * His office stalled me for five months and then refused to amend my return despite their mistakes. * Friends who referred me are also having problems with their return. Yes, his rates may be lower, but you truly "get what you pay for" - or worse, you pay more later to have a real CPA fix the errors. ***Check the NJ division of Consumer Affairs and CPAverify.org to confirm credentials. Don't make the same mistake that I did.

My experience with the Brass Taxes platform was great.  The user interface was simple,…read morestraightforward, and easy to interact with. I worked with a consultant named Ryan, who was fantastic. Ryan's advice was timely and comforting, and I've really enjoyed working with him.  The difference in my experience between using turbotax and working with Ryan is quite like the difference between going to a supercuts and going to a skilled barber at a nice barbershop.  Difficult to forget the difference once you've experienced it... I can't see myself bashing my way through turbotax again next year.  I can't recall the price difference, but know there's not a significant difference between paying turbotax to "review" your taxes, vs paying Brass Taxes for an actual consultation.  Like many people, tax code is largely over my head, and in either case I'm entrusting someone to get me through the process of filing, but being able to have a chat with a human being about it, especially a pleasant human being like Ryan, makes a significant contribution to the overall experience and my confidence in the process that is definitely worth it to me.   Cheers BT team, see ya next year!
