My experience with the Brass Taxes platform was great.  The user interface was simple, straightforward, and easy to interact with. I worked with a consultant named Ryan, who was fantastic. Ryan's advice was timely and comforting, and I've really enjoyed working with him.  The difference in my experience between using turbotax and working with Ryan is quite like the difference between going to a supercuts and going to a skilled barber at a nice barbershop.  Difficult to forget the difference once you've experienced it... I can't see myself bashing my way through turbotax again next year.  I can't recall the price difference, but know there's not a significant difference between paying turbotax to "review" your taxes, vs paying Brass Taxes for an actual consultation.  Like many people, tax code is largely over my head, and in either case I'm entrusting someone to get me through the process of filing, but being able to have a chat with a human being about it, especially a pleasant human being like Ryan, makes a significant contribution to the overall experience and my confidence in the process that is definitely worth it to me.   Cheers BT team, see ya next year! read more

The BEST tax services for anyone in film/tv. They know exactly how to handle perma-lance workers 1099s and W2s. I've been using them for years since a 2nd AD friend of mine referred me to them and can't go back to doing them myself. It's SO worth the cost and they make it SO easy on you as well - you upload all your documents beforehand, write down your expenses, bills, etc, and they do all the heavy lifting. I personally prefer the video call over the phone, but either way you'll know you're in good hands as they go over each step with you. Highly recommend using them early in the year (when they're less expensive) or having them file a free and easy extension for you and using them after the tax deadline (also less expensive). People have unrealistic expectations of accountants. By the time I hired Russ, he'd been traumatized by people's unrealistic demands for refunds. I did not put pressure on Russ to manipulate my tax liability because I can live without IRS scrutiny or audits, but he made errors on both my returns. He miscalculated a credit on my Federal and did not input a tax I owed on my State. I have not been back because Russ told me his audit fee and I decided to be responsible for my tax fate from that date forward. Pros: Expedient; Russ was able to complete my taxes quickly. Third year of going to them and I think this past year was our last. This time around it was our responsibility to send out//finish everything and just a few weeks ago we got a form from IRS noting that what we sent to both federal and state was incorrect and we still owe hundreds more than the thousands we sent. So if you want to pay them but still do some of the work and then still get it wrong then I would recommend it, but for us I think we will just go somewhere lame that includes a guarantee. Added a star because the people who work there are very nice, I always prefer to go to a small business, and they encourage civil engagement, but again not really sure what I was paying for this year. read more

I'm a freelance Assistant Director. i typically have 20-30 w2s, 1099 income, file in several states and like to really expense my spendings appropriately. For a portion of what many of my colleagues pay, I've found brass taxes to offer an easier system and a smoother filing process. My whole system is more organized because of what I've learned through using brass taxes. You upload everything, complete a clear questionnaire regarding expenses and then go in for your appointment to file. Doing your taxes is annoying regardless, but it's really not a big deal anymore when someone can do it for you correctly and for a great price. Earlier today my husband and I went to the Brass Taxes offices, after a very warm recommendation from a friend. That friend's credibility points went way up after our meeting. We met with Rus, a great guy that totally spoke my "freelance language" and had tons of knowledge and patience to answer my questions (English isn't my first language, and I don't really speak Taxes at all). We were not sure what to expect, but after today Brass Taxes have earned our business for life. Rus made the entire process totally easy to understand, and completely painless. For the first time ever we're not completely dreading this time of year. We usually do our taxes with H&R Block, mostly because they're on our block and we don't know any better. I really like how their website is set up, basically you send all your tax info to them before the appointment so once you are there all you have to do is go through it to verify that everything is correct. Last year, after a not-so-great experience with another tax preparer, I was trying to find a new person to help with my taxes and almost as if an answer from the Universe, I came across a flyer for Brass Taxes in Brooklyn. I checked out the website, made an appointment, and really loved how easy it was to work with Rus and what an awesome tax guy he is! He played some cool music, asked me some questions and in no time had my taxes done and I was on my way! After that great experience, I also went to Rus to get help with some LLC questions I had, and in general always seem to have some random, ridiculous questions (I sometimes feel like an annoying 5-year old with all of my "what about this, what about that" questions), but Rus either digs in and finds the answer, or points me in the direction of someone who would be able to better answer non-tax related questions. These folks are the best! I had a terrible experience with getting my 2012 taxes prepared by a firm in Manhattan and having everything done by Brass Taxes for 2013 was like a breath of fresh air. I met with Erin at their new office on Dean St and everything was very fast and streamlined, but I didn't feel like she was trying to rush me out of the door. She took the time to go over some specific questions I had for the next year and even did a little research and got back to me via email about some stuff that she wasn't able to immediately answer. Had these guys do my taxes when I went full self-employed thinking they'd be able to offer more guidance than Turbotax. Unfortunately, my session with them amounted to very little in the way of actual information exchange. There had been a mix-up in communication and the data entry people basically threw a fit and tried to cancel. Treated me like I was somehow the enemy, and gave me the cold shoulder when I came in. After all that, I thought they'd saved me some money on taxes, though. Until I got a bill from NY and the fed for the amount they saved me plus 3 years of daily compounded interest. Cool place and friendly people but I stopped going after having them do my 2015 tax return. I owed more money than ever before my last visit plus the fee is high. When I inquired on why I'm suddenly paying more than in the past or trying to understanding the differences, I didn't get clear information and was left confused. I want my tax accountant to do more than just punch in the information onto a form. I could do that on TurboTax myself. I also was told by my new accountant that BrassTaxes indicated in my last filing that I'd be filing quarterly which I never do.. luckily the IRS hasn't come after me for not doing this as I was unaware. read more
