I never write reviews because I don't like to damage people's businesses, and it's not my intention in this case either, but after reading the other 1 star reviews I could relate to the pain of that people and finally decided to do it... A summary of my experience: * Mistakes: A year after filing with Choice Tax, we found a considerable discrepancy in my favor from the reports that they prepared, that my new accountant could fortunately amend (It took me 1+ years to get a refund). I initially thought it was due to the complexity of my case, but some mistakes were part of the standard process and could have been perfectly avoided. * Bad customer service: No customer friendly. She sounds arrogant and not very tolerant with questions from someone not well versed in US tax stuff (as I was). Now, If she makes one mistake she'll probably blame you. She also charged me an extra hour for something that I thought was just part of my standard return (I had already payed $720, so I ended up paying more than 1K). Not big deal, but I wasn't expecting that and would have preferred to know upfront. * International assets: I didn't find her knowledgeable enough on things like stocks and/or foreign assets (especially if you have a cross-border or cross-state situation). Most of the time I was on my own on figuring things out or asking questions to my company's HR department, and potentially making mistakes because of lack of guidance. If she had worked on a single case of a person perceiving salary in part in stock and relocating internationally or across states, I wouldn't have to do that or incurred in over-reporting. I thought that my case was quite complex or unique, but after working with other professionals I found out that it wasn't uncommon at all (especially in NYC which is a common relocation destination for employees of big corporations). I see a lot of 5 star reviews, so, as another reviewer said: maybe she's good for US returns but not so much for international and complicated company returns, like mine. I give the benefit of the doubt, but that doesn't take away how bad my experience was. read more

I've already reviewed the horrible experience I had with Abby. It gets better though. She was so injured by my negative review, that she refuses to provide copies of my returns. To be clear, she did provide me a downloadable document last month, but I did not have access to a printer. She locked me out of her system and refuses to provide copies for 3 returns she finished last month. I just want to be done with this office and would be if they sent me my 3 returns, but instead they have chosen to be spiteful. I have literally paid them $2500 and am walking away with 2 returns. I explained that I don't want to take this further and just want my returns that I paid for, but her office wrote: Your request has been reviewed.  Since all the paperwork (returns, etc.) and status have already been provided to you, and as you have been terminated as a client, your request is denied. Not having a printer does not mean you did not receive the tax returns.  Apparently you lost or deleted them in error, especially since you confirmed receipt of them and advised Abby that you were reviewing them. As your case has been closed with this office, there is no further obligation to be involved in your case. Your subsequent tax person(s) will be responsible for assisting you. It's almost TAX time of year and I look forward to meeting my Tax consultant Abby Eisenkraft who I first met when another account messed up my taxes and the IRS came asking me for money I did not really owe. Also, I should note that she works very well "virtually" and can accommodate your questions//requests easily via phone or email. I've made two mistakes when moving to the US; buying an underpowered AC unit and using Abby Eisenkraft as my (professional) accountant. Rude, abrasive, and also to be honest not entirely on planet earth I've had everything from accusations that I insinuated she should commit tax evasion for me (really?) to her informing me the day before a final deadline that a form needed to be filed or I'd get a $2500 US fine (a 'tag, you're it' approach. Whenever it was her fault in correspondence, well actually, it was mine apparently. Rather than solving problems together, she'd get flustered and accusative. When my UK accountant had no idea about some of the US accounting terms she was using rather than explaining them, she just moved onto the next point with a 'his problem... not mine...' attitude in correspondence. Seeing a mix of one star and five star reviews for choice taxes it makes me think; either she treats some people differently, or she's good for US returns but beyond awful for international and complicated company returns (mine being a case in point). The big question is; do you really want to leave your tax returns up to the whims of which side of the fence you end up on with Abby? I fully expect a counter-reply from Abby to try and duck and weave out of what I've written, because let's not mince words, she's built a professional business from it. My new accountant in contrast is professional, courteous and a joy. Choice Taxes is a distant memory. Goodbye Abby (I feel happy saying that). read more

Thank God for Abby! The IRS sent me a notice that I owed $118K in taxes, interest and penalties. Abby re-did my taxes, and got me a $1500 tax **REFUND**. It doesn't get any better than that. She amended my returns promptly so that we were able to respond to the IRS within the deadline that it set for me to pay the $118K. You cannot imagine how terrifying it was to get a letter from the IRS that I owed so much money. Abby is a really caring person and did so much to calm my fears from the moment I first spoke to her. Are you KIDDING?!? SHE IS THE BEST!!! I have been going to her for three years now, she is professional, efficient and has a great personality (uncommon for a tax professional). I often have unique and honestly pretty demanding questions throughout the year for her. All I have to do is send her an email and she is back to me before the end of the day with an answer. She has amazing customer service, is very reliable, honest, and knows how to work hard for her clients. Her rates are pretty reasonable $60-90 per tax preparation for non standard filings. I believe the few extra dollars is well spent knowing you have a person who knows their stuff advising you. If everyone involved in our tax system worked the way she does, we wouldn't have a soaring national debt, fiscal cliff and rampant tax fraud. This is several years late. We worked with abby maybe 6 years ago. I found her through all these reviews on yelp. It was a one time deal. IN retrospect now, being more educated, I realized that she didn't even know how to file a backdoor Roth and then blamed us for giving her the wrong paperwork. We were both in our 30s at the time. When we caught the mistake on our review of the taxes (bad on us for not realizing that this should have been a screening question for us), she charged us extra to fix it and was super abrasive. I'm also going to add for we paid for an hour of her time for "tax preparation" advice. That was a huge waste of time. We met in her office, she was dressed professionally but It was a meandering conversation, non-focused. I'm not even sure she reviewed our information before we got there b/c she was so vague and non specific. In regard to Ms. Eisencraft's January 18, 2015 response to an unflattering review in connection with a case we have become familiar with, she exhibits what can best be described as an extraordinarily flexible relationship with facts that are fully documented. It is not at all fictional, as Ms. Eisencraft claims, that each of the following took place: 1. Months after signing a retainer agreement with this client, Ms. Eisenkraft tried to intimidate the client into signing a second retainer that included, buried in the paperwork, a $50 increase in her hourly rate, to which she didn't bother calling attention. She then abandoned this client for refusing to accede to this type of "bait and switch." 2. After the client had paid Ms. Eisencraft close to $1,000 in hourly charges beyond her original estimate, and was then asked to pay hundreds of dollars more, Ms. Eisencraft refused to provide the client with any records, not even a written summary, of the work she claimed to have done on the client's behalf during this time. 3. In support of the client's attempt to obtain these records, their credit card issuer advised Ms. Eisencraft that some prior payments made to her were being contested, but that the client wanted only documentation, such as a log or summary, of the work she had done for them. Ms. Eisencraft never provided this. The card issuer responded by refunding the payments in question. As credit card users realize, other than for negligible amounts of money, card issuers only take this step when they are convinced that their clients have been the victims of dishonest or fraudulent practices. 4. Although Ms. Eisencraft had told her client that IRS officers normally wrap up tax payer audits within a week or less of meeting with her, and rarely or never in her experience take more than four to six weeks, this client waited more than a year for a determination. Despite the client's repeated requests, Ms. Eisencraft refused to escalate the case beyond the level of the auditor's supervisor, who later acknowledged to the client that she was powerless to move things along. The client had been requesting their records from Ms. Eisencraft in support of their own efforts to get their case resolved. 5. Working without the benefit of records, the client himself, with no prior involvement with IRS audits and procedures, reached an IRS official with enough seniority to get the audit finalized within three business days, without involving Ms. Eisencraft. As per her reaction to the other unflattering reviews on this website, Ms. Eisencraft will likely do her best to attack and discredit this client once again by resorting to false generalities while hiding behind her supposed regard for the client's privacy. read more

It is disappointing but not not surprising that Ms. Eisencroft would dismiss the 1/18/2015 review as an "incoherent rant" in which "every word" after the lauditory paragraph is "untrue." Readers can judge the coherence of the review for themselves. They can likewise judge for themselves whether someone out to produce a "rant" would begin by describing Ms. Eisencroft as "extremely knowledgeable ... about federal and state tax codes." I can attest that every word and sentence in the review is truthful. I still have the email exchanges, through our last contact with Ms. Eisencroft, that document this. Based on their investigation of this matter, our credit card issuer refunded our payments for work that Ms. Eisencroft claimed to have done but wouldn't or couldn't document. read more

To say that Abby is a great tax expert, consultant and advisor does not begin to describe her and the expertise she offers. Like others, my husband and I found Abby on the Internet: divine intervention, indeed. Self-employed, I was facing TWO years of tax audits with stiff penalties I simply would not be able to pay: I was more than a little freaking out and losing sleep. I cannot understand the reviews where Ms Eisenkraft is lauded for her helpfulness or sorting out a mess. In my experience Ms Eisenkraft was unhelpful and abrasive. I wanted to find a new tax accountant as the one I had worked with for a few years made a number of errors that I could easily spot, which made me uncomfortable with what errors I was unable to spot. I first chose Choice Tax because she has such good reviews. I find these questionable and they did not match up with my experience. My first warning sign was her manner -- not customer service friendly at all. If I look back now I can say that she was honest with me when she told me that she was not going to do all the work, I had to organize everything, fill out all the forms and then she would file. She was abrasive from the start, so I should have left before I got myself in any deeper. I am accustomed to adding up the expenses, categorizing them and providing them to an accountant. I do not want to wade through sets of forms -- this is what I want to pay someone to do for me, otherwise I would just do it myself. Ms EisenKraft delayed and delayed filing my taxes until she told me that she was filing an extension. After the extension I repeatedly asked what I should do to complete my taxes (other than doing it myself) -- she then decided she was not going to complete my taxes, but demanded that I pay her anyway!! I found a tax accountant who was pleasant, customer-service oriented, helpful and completed my taxes without causing stress or unpleasantness. read more

There are not enough words to explain how Abby helped me with my tax problems. I found her through a friend and that was 6 years ago (more or less.) I walked into her office scared, taxes in a mess from years of freelancing, and the IRS down my back, it was a very scary time. Abby made me feel so much better!
