I experienced Dr. Porter as the anesthesiologist for an outpatient procedure I had at IU Health…read moreWest, a full-service hospital located in Avon, Indiana. Per the IU website, Dr. Porter is a hospital-based provider only who serves IU Methodist, IU University, IU North, and IU West. He's an osteopathic physician whose specialty is anesthesiology. Anesthesiology is one of those weird specialties and I'm not even sure it's completely fair to review it. The actual encounter time is always limited. I met Dr. Porter a few minutes before the procedure (actually a few minutes later than the procedure was actually scheduled). He explained his process and listened when I expressed some concerns considering he was planning to approach it differently than I had told the surgery would be handled. He explained in a very fundamental way (too fundamental) why this was his preference and I agreed to go with it. I was impressed that when I informed him of my trauma background that he offered to let me place the mask on myself and he then followed up with that once I was in the OR. So, that was a huge and appreciated plus. Obviously, once I was knocked out I have no idea what happened. However, one way to assess urology is by the recovery room journey and I awakened with very little difficulty and was actually in pretty good shape in post-op. I was able to eat and drink fairly quickly. My procedure started around 3:45 or so and I was pretty close to out the door by 6pm. Dr. Porter checked in with me, of course, by surgery's end. He had a pretty casual air about him. He was definitely confident, but not in a conceited way. I was probably most bothered by the conflicting plans for anesthetic and do wish that had been resolved prior to my being in the operating room. It's awkward by that point to have discussions about it, but it unnecessarily increased my anxiety. Overall, however, this was a good experience and I especially appreciated the trauma-informed care that aided my comfort. As a hospitalist, he tends to be one of those docs where you don't necessarily get a "choice" but in this case all worked out well and I found him to be a friendly, professional, and knowledgeable practitioner.

This woman is a quack. She does not listen to you, the patient, at all…read more I had a severe sinus infection which was causing severe pain and pressure and nerve damage to my eyelid and making it droop. It had never done this before. First, an assistant came in, examined me, wrote a bunch of stuff on a chart and then left me sitting for about 20 minutes. (Assistants like this are an easy way to make money, you can charge for their time as well but they don't do anything useful since this Dr. basically doesn't pay attention to what they write down.) Then Ball comes in, asks me the EXACT same questions, does the same examination. I tried to explain what I was going through, how intense the pain and pressure were and was there something she could give me for pain. I explained that my eye was a big concern as it looked odd and droopy. She ignored me and basically said that I had an asymmetrical face! I think I'd know what my face used to look like, I see it every day. People who know me kept asking what was wrong with my eye! Well, nope, I was normal according to Ball. My first clue that she's a quack. After telling her I had a mild heart attack 2 years previously and high blood pressure, she gave me samples of Clariten D. Almost every doctor in the U.S. knows that's a big no-no. You don't give Claritin D to a heart patient. Well, throughout the next week, I kept having angina all the time and finally read the package and it said not to take if you have heart problems. She would not prescribe anything stronger than Tylenol for pain, even though I had told her that Tylenol was not helping at all and I was worried about taking so much of it. So much for compassion. I got a friend to give me some Vicodin which finally took the pain away and let me go to work and do my job the next few days. She scheduled me for a CAT scan of my sinuses and when the films came back 3 days later, she said there was no problems, everything looked normal. (Which BTW, she could have easily handled on the phone, but no, I had to come in again. More $ for the good Dr.) She wanted to run a series of tests which were going to cost me out of pocket almost 1000 dollars. I finally figured out that she was a quack and was trying to soak me for money and tests are where she makes her money. I got out of there and never went back. I took the films to another Dr. and he told me that not only was there obvious abnormalities on the right side of my head, that I barely had sinuses in some areas. He also prescribed antibiotics to clear up the infection so I could get some relief and he prescribed a very good pain reliever. Wow, a doctor who cares. I still have permanent nerve damage in my right eye and a drooping eyelid which my new doctor said could have been avoided had I undergone antibiotics in the first week. He was puzzled as to why Ball had not prescribed an antibiotic to get the infection down to a reasonable point. I was too. Anyway, Ball didn't listen to me, didn't read the films right, gave me samples which almost gave me a heart attack (again, not listening to the patient about their own health) and in general seemed annoyed that I was even in the office. To be honest, it really felt like she didn't believe a word I was telling her, even though the other doctor I went to said I was running a fever, had a bad infection and he basically cured me within 2 weeks. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS SUPPOSED DOCTOR!!!

Dr. Ibrahim Abu Romeh, with the Indiana University Cardiologist Group, was the physician I was…read morereferred to after some heart issues. The scheduling was effortless and the appointment was made 2 days after the referral was requested. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease with hospital privileges at IU Health Methodist, IU Health University and IU Health West. Dr. Abu is also licensed to provide online care in Indiana. He accepts several different insurance plans so check with your insurance company first if you need his services. IU Health West Hospital is located at the corner of Ronald Regan Parkway and West 10th Street. The hospital has free parking and a patient drop-off area but valet parking isn't currently available. The office is just inside the main entrance and masks plus use of hand sanitizer (they provide) is required to enter. The entrance to the hospital and his office is wheelchair accessible. The office staff has always been friendly, professional and helpful. Chairs have been removed in the waiting area in order to practice social distancing. Again, masks are required in all areas of the hospital. Dr. Romeh is very professional and confident with years of experience. Whether at his office or in the hospital he listens carefully to me and repeats back what he heard. He doesn't dillydally but spends enough time to discuss everything necessary and I never feel rushed. Procedures and medication along with his treatment plan are clearly explained. Dr. Romeh allows for and always ask if I have any questions. I feel very lucky he has proceeded as he has with my treatment plan. My quality of life has improved since my procedures. Now, to tackle rehab!
