It's annoying but I'm not going there for the cultural experience. Unfortunately today a song came on with a gay slur: "fa___ts" used as an insult (the song is Roman's Revenge by Nikki Minaj, and the lyrics are "All you lil' fa__ots can suck it"). The song ended and after giving it some thought I decided to approach management. My words were "I do not want to hear the word fa__ot in a song played when I'm working out, do you understand?". I was asked to speak up and repeated those words exactly a second time, slightly louder. The first response from the man I spoke with was to "check my attitude" - for my tone I guess? My tone was firm and my words chosen carefully. I did not ask them to change the music, or turn it off. I said what I didn't like and asked for confirmation that they understood where I was coming from. I don't think the Rock, or ANY of its employees are homophobic. I am not publicly cancelling the Rock. I am a big boy and don't need retribution or a pile on of voices calling for heads. I DID cancel my membership though, because if the first response to what was ABSOLUTELY A REASONABLE PIECE OF FEEDBACK (albeit said in a firm way) is to ask the person to moderate their tone, then readers, you know what kind of people you are dealing with at The Rock. It sucks because I live a very short walk from The Rock, but I would be compromising my self respect by continuing to patronize this business.

Two levels and pretty decent square footage of strength and cardio options! Overall my experience there has been good and no real glaring issues that I'm noticing. The locker rooms are alright and can be cramped at times especially when many of them have a reserved sign on them. Sauna is a bit tiny and can really only fit maybe 2 people at a time. It's also awkwardly placed so your view is of everyone coming in and out of the room. Overall, glad I didn't let negative reviews sway me in another direction as I'm happy to be a member here

They work muscles you didn't even realize needed strengthening. Each session is full-body focused and constantly reminds you to engage your core. When I first started, I could feel how weak my abs were, and now I can feel just how much stronger they've become. My legs are always on fire in that amazing burn-you-love kind of way! I've also noticed real changes in my body, not only in strength but in looking and feeling slimmer. There are only 11 spots/megaformers per class, and reservations open two weeks in advance. Staff basically acted like this is normal -- like it's happened to other people too. The way it was described to me sounded coordinated (someone checking if the locker room is empty while another person targets lockers). I can't prove who did it, but the pattern is scary. And the security setup? A joke. Yes, you can't put cameras inside locker rooms -- nobody's asking for that. But there should be cameras outside the locker room exits, in the hallway, near the elevators/stairs, anywhere that tracks who walks out. From what I saw, there's basically front desk coverage only, which is useless once someone leaves the locker area. Management's response was weak. No urgency. No real investigation energy. No "we're fixing this now." It felt like they care more about collecting membership money than protecting members. Also the place is nasty: dirty, people litter, and basic gym manners don't exist. The whole vibe is chaotic and poorly managed. If you're in Astoria, pick literally another gym.

It is a horrible approach to business to ignore known equipment issues and stay silent while a new member joins for those specific machines. There were no "out of order" signs and zero transparency. Save your money and go to a gym that actually maintains its equipment and communicates honestly.
