We returned to Via 417 last night for dinner hoping to replicate the wonderful meal we had there before....and we did! It's great Jenkintown has a few spots close by that are little hidden gems. Of course, we HAD to get the Shirt Rib again, and it was so tender and delicious!! We complimented that dish with the pasta special of the night - Homemade Fettuccine with Shrimp and Crab Meat. It was in an exquisite red bell pepper sauce and the pasta was cooked perfectly! The large tender shrimps were the best! Cute little Italian neighborhood place. It looks like it could be your grandma's house. We were greeted as doon as we entered. The servers were attentive and friendly. There were 8 of us and they took the time to work with each person. We started with escargo which were buttery and had a strong garlic flavor. They were soft to the bite and well seasoned. We also had fried Calamari. It was fried perfectly and also seasoned nicely. The sausage and shrimp dish in Cajun cream sauce was delectable. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was delicious. The New York strip was cooked to the right temp and the shrimp and polenta put it over the top. The one dish that was disappointing was the Bronzino as the risotto had no flavor to it. There was no salt and pepper added during the cooking process. The desserts were the basic Italian cannoli and tiramusu. None of it blew us away. This is a wonderful spot in the heart of Jenkintown. It's small, cozy, and serves really delicious food. This was my first time and it didn't disappoint. This place is a well known goto for locals so make sure you have a reservation. It's also BYOB which I always like. We started with the beet salad, Caesar salad and escargot. The beets were perfectly cooked and served with a vinaigrette over greens and fresh ricotta. The Caesar was cold, crisp and fresh with flavorful croutons. The escargot was a delightful surprise as they were paired with mushrooms and garlic butter sauce. They were tender and the sauce was heaven with the bread. Our main dishes were the pappardelle pasta over short rib and the seafood risotto. Both were very good and ample servings. The seafood was fresh and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. Was in the area and decided to make a reservation and stop by for dinner. We were seated swiftly at ~6:20pm on a Sunday evening (the restaurant never got too busy - we were seated pretty close to another table despite the mostly empty restaurant which was strange, though I loved sitting by the window). Our server brought our water and complimentary bread in a timely manner and went over all the specials of the day. The bread was mediocre and nothing special. We decided to order fried calamari to start as well as the chicken parm and the pasta special (pappardelle with shrimp and spicy Italian sausage in a mushroom cream sauce). The fried calamari came with some pickled peppers and was pretty disappointing; I'd skip this. As for the entrees, the chicken parm was hefty and was pretty tasty (taste was on par/standard to other Italian restaurants in Philly/Philly area). The pasta special was delicious with perfectly al dente noodles in a scrumptious cream sauce. My only complaint was that it was $42 which felt pretty steep relative to other menu items (for example, seafood risotto with mussels, shrimp, and clams is only $30). As for dessert, we finished with the tiramisu which was yummy, though again pretty standard to other Italian restaurants (it is less coffee-forward / more cream heavy). Came here this evening with my husband for a celebration dinner. Quaint Italian restaurant nestled in the heart of Jenkintown. BYOB. We were served by the owner of the restaurant. He developed the menu himself. Everything we tried was very good and presentation was beautiful. Portion sizes were relatively small. The bread could've been better because it was seriously lacking in flavor. It was just plain white sandwich bread. It would've been nice if they served Parmesan cheese with the pasta. This place really put it's energy into bringing out the flavors by carefully selecting each ingredient to ensure it blends well. Ordered delivery for the pappardelle bolognese and added sausage (7 dollars extra for sausage) the amount of sausage for 7 bucks was laughable and I would definitely say adding a protein was not worth it. My wife got the ziti puttanesca which she said was decent but a bit overpriced. Was referred by the cashier at ACME. It's a new restaurant with very good food and great price points. We were seated right away without a reservation. The staff and service was above and beyond my expectations. The daily specials were excellent. Ordered the pesto past and seafood special. It was a 10 out of 10. The appetizers of calamari and mussels were good. The mussels came with hot peppers. The desserts were good. We got the cheesecake special which was good. It's a BYOB. This has been one of our go-to favorite place since it opened. Usually the food is excellent. Last night I ordered the chicken piccata. It was very disappointing. The chicken breasts were thick, dry, and flavorless. One of the things that makes chicken piccata "piccata" is the tenderness of the chicken, achieved in part by pounding the chicken breasts until they are very thin. Perhaps the chef didn't pound the chicken? You can also slice the breasts to help make them thinner. Overall, very disappointing. The creme brulee was excellent, as usual. read more

Dining companions had the salmon and ziti. All were pleased. The Caesar salad was delicious. The caprese was ok - hot house tomatoes were nothing to write home about. I normally love calamari, but these perfect rings were clearly from frozen, but I've had worse, and came with hot cherry peppers. Yikes! I ate a big pepper ring before I realized. The desserts were delightful, but I would've preferred at least some fresh berries served over the Panna Cotta. All in all a nice dinner spot. read more

I think that 3 stars is "a-ok." This was that. The restaurant itself is quite small and the tables are fairly close together, which kind of works given that it's fairly loud, although not overwhelmingly so. Service was great. No complaints. FOOD: - The bread. My God, the bread. It is nothing short of awful. Just lacking in any flavor whatsoever. I don't know how they found such flavorless bread. - Calamari. The rings were very large but the portion wasn't huge. A nice light breading. Marinara could have used a little kick. - Veal saltimbocca. Again, not an enormous portion but totally adequate. Broccoli on the side was very good. Potatoes were undercooked. - Papardelle with mushrooms and short ribs. A good pasta dish. Very rich. Could have used a bit more salt. We had tiramisu and panna cotta. I'm sure they weren't house-made. Both were fine. Neither were remarkable. $11 seemed to be a little steep. It's a totally competent neighborhood BYOB. I might return but I'm not terribly excited about the prospect. And man, the bread is terrible. read more

A solid 4.5 really (would have been a 5 if not for an opening week glitch). The service was terrific, the space was intimate and well appointed (beautiful decor, perfect plates/utensils/artwork, etc), and the food was AMAZING. My husband and I shared a mussels appetizer, a pappardelle bolognese (the miscommunication; we'd ordered a different pappardelle), and the Bronzino with risotto. The mussels were as good as we've had. The pasta and fish dishes were the best we've ever had. The pasta was homemade and the sauce was amazingly full bodied and flavorful. The fish was fresh with a very crispy skin served over risotto with peas and flakes of fish. The portions were large and perfectly seasoned. We'd told the super nice server that we were sharing everything in three courses and they split the two entrees beautifully for us without us asking. When the server realized we'd been brought the wrong pasta she brought us the one we'd originally ordered to take home free of charge. This is a new byob in Jenkintown and it's the most excited we've been about a new restaurant in a very long time, if ever. read more

I wanted to take my grandmother to a nice restaurant while visiting Jenkintown--she doesn't get to eat at nice restaurants much since she lives alone and doesn't drive. I saw nice reviews of Via 417 and we walked in. I got the sense immediately that it was a slightly younger (20s-50s), hip crowd, but the staff didn't bat an eye. They made great accommodations for us, and it was the high quality and hip dining experience she got to have. First time here for us and definitely won't be the last. Everything from beginning to end was fantastic. Let's start with appetizers, three dishes... octopus, calamari and tuna tartare. Each one excellent. I loved the almost non-existent breading on the calamari and the use of larger rings. Fantastic. Move to entrees, I had brazino with crab risotto, wife got pasta and shrimp. Perfect portions. Expertly prepared and presented. Desert was my favorite, creme brule. Not a complicated dish, but yet so many restuarans mess it up, there's rocked, spot on. The bread is worse than on my first visit. WTF! Two recommendations. 1- if you are serving an entree that start with the word shrimp then put some shrimp in it. 2- usually a marinara sauce has garlic in it. Via 417 had been on our list to check out for sometime and we finally made it! Wow was it a great choice. We were warmly created and seated, within in mins warm bread was brought to the table. You could instantly smell the fresh herbs and garlic the bread was seasoned with. Additionally there was herb infused olive oil on the table for dipping. Any Italian resturant that gives you butter packets with bread is an automatic mediocre restaurant. This was not even close. The bread was fresh and delicious and the olive oil was a slam dunk. We ordered all the specials as we wanted to take advance of end of dinner options as much as we could. We started out with the cream of spinach soup and peach caprese with a truffle balsamic. Out of this world. We ordered the halibut with a puréed broccoli reduction sauce and angel hair pasta, which was outstanding. We also ordered the homemade parpadelli pasta with shrimp, scallops, spicy sausage in a spicy cream sauce. I am already looking forward to my next meal here it was that good!! read more
