We typically do "laps" around the park to make sure the pups get their energy out. I always say, "A good basenji is a tired basenji." I like going in the mornings because it's less busy. The best part is that if the dogs aren't feeling the dog park, it's in the beautiful Balboa Park which is always a perfect walk with my fur babies!

We brought Stitch and Tink to play with old friends and meet new ones. This a group hosted specifically for rescue Bulldogs. Pups were so cute and played nice together. I was annoyed that a dog owner not part of our group for not watching her dog who was incessantly harassing one of the rescue pups. I finally told her to get her dog or he'll get bitten to which she replied, "maybe he needs to." She picked him up for a few minutes. The second she pup him down he headed right over to the same dog and was right at it again. Some one else asked her if she was ok when her dog getting bitten. I was here volunteering for the dog rescue. She is the reason why I don't bring my own dog to dog parks are beaches. I can't trust other dog owners to supervise their pets. There are plenty of trash receptacles and at least two bathrooms and water fountains that I saw. Abundant parking as well.

And on the outside there are other openly wide u gated grass areas. 1) there are (open using) homeless around so I don't know how I feel about my dog here as there may be drugs on the ground. Be vigilant. 2) there can be some careless dog owners here. I've heard of dog-on-dog attacks here from time to time - unsure if it's in the gated area or th surrounding. What I do like: - the dog park has some grass - mostly clean (of course some leave their mess) - limited seats - parking What I don't like: - landscape is weird, uneven and hard for dogs to play without sometimes stumbling - kind of close to very busy streets, in the event a dog escapes the areas or from owners, it can be very dangerous for them - homeless with their unleashed dogs roaming the areas (sometimes)

This will definitely require you to give your pooch a good rub down with a wet cloth afterward, something that I don't really mind doing so long as my girl gets to run around and explore. It should be noted that this park is *NOT enclosed*, making it's proximity to Florida Dr. a perilous one. So, if your dog is prone to wandering off, this is probably not the best park for you. I can get over the lack of grass, fence, seating, clogged doggie water fountains and open ditches because there are plenty of poop bags and shade here and there. Plus, the surrounding trails nearby make for an enjoyable stroll. And my girl definitely loves to walk rather than socialize with her kind because she's a grumpy old woman who enjoys the company of her owner. No complaints there. I'll still stop in here and there, although Balboa Park and Grape Street are definitely better options.

THE HANGOUT (4.5 stars)…read more Couple years ago they put in place the dog parks - finally. North Park is such a dog friendly neighborhood - it makes sense to have a dog park. It's located at North Park Community Park - the north east corner (closest corner to the water tower). There is a big and small dog park section. I've seen these dog parks grow thru the years. The big dog park use to have grass and now and for the past several year it's just DIRT. The small dog park also use to have grass but now it's those weird dry grass stuff and dirt. The small dog park isn't as used as the big dog park. And if the big dog park is closed off for cleaning everyone moves their big dogs into the small dog park (which is tiny) and there isn't room for small dogs to play safely. A lot of regulars and same faces. My previous Pom enjoyed the normal community park as she was well behaved without a leash. Yes, outside of the dog areas dogs are to be leashed but many dogs that are well behaved out playing in the grass area. There are MANY respectful owners watching their dogs. Wednesdays some of the neighbor peeps meet up in the grass area. I bring my new dog there to socialize her and she refuses to leave. She will lay on the grass and won't get up when it's time to leave. I have a soft spot for this park as I've seen it transform from it being just a dump to what it is now. We heart North Park.

The only thing this park is missing is shade and more parking. Other than that, it's great! There are two play structures, one for big kids and another for little ones. It's walking distance to a lot of restaurants and coffee shops which is a plus!

There's a group of locals that go every day and think that the park is theirs . Follow their unspoken rules or they'll tell you about it .

I live next door to this dog park and used to go every day after dinner with my two dogs…read more The biggest change is that a partial fence between the dog area and the children's playground was installed after some run in between an off-leash dog and a little kid in the playground. The dogs used to run around and through the playground, and the new fence helps distance the dogs from the playground. The off-leash area is not completely fenced so if you're dog is a runner, this is not the park for you. I had a big rescue mastiff who would randomly get in fights with other dogs, even after I muzzled him so I stopped going. My other dog died a year ago, and the mastiff recently succumbed to cancer. :( I now have a 10-pound toy fox terrier, and I just don't feel safe taking her to the park with all the big dogs. It just takes a second for her to get trampled or attacked by a bigger dog, and I don't want to risk it. I will sometimes take her late in the day when there are only 1 or 2 dogs about. We have a big yard though, so she has the opportunity to run around off-leash at home. The dogs and owners here are very friendly for the most part. Although someone commented that the dogs don't necessarily interact that much, if you go regularly your dog will make doggie friends and you will probably make friends with other owners. People are very chatty, so you do need to not get distracted and miss seeing your dog pooping so you can clean it up. I think most owners pick up after their dogs, although you will sometimes find abandoned poop on the periphery near the canyon. There is a poop bag dispenser available. There are not any tables or chairs within the fenced off-leash area so people will often have their dogs off-leash on the wrong side of the fence (by the playground) so they can sit down. There is disappointedly no water source for doggy drinking water, although I know of at least one regular who has a key to the water and fills up a bucket during the after work bust time. Some people take their dogs onto the fully fenced baseball fields when they're not being used for a game/practice. I'm sure this is prohibited, but I've never seen or heard of anyone getting in trouble for this. There are restrooms, but I'm not sure when they're open. I've never needed to use them since I literally live next door to the park. There is a parking lot and on street parking, but parking can get very crowded during Little League games.

I got a little confused about where the dog park was because there's no fenced area. I asked one of the ladies sitting at the bench and she pointed at the picnic tables further in the park and said that's the dog park. There were only two dogs there but Gibbs had a blast playing with them in the unfenced area. The grass was in relatively good shape and the area was pretty clean. The only down side was there's no water fountain for the dogs. There was a bucket of water probably provided by some nice dog owner. I brought my own water bottle for Gibbs but the other dog owner didn't have water for her dog so we shared the one I had. Overall it's pretty nice for the dogs and for me because the view there was nice too.

PLAY FIELD TO DOG PARK (4.5 stars)…read more Sometime during the pandemic, this field turned into a cute neighborhood dog park. I would take my small Pomeranian here nearly everyday the last few years of her life and she loves it so much. We would see the same neighborhood faces over and over and we just became regulars. Dogs are suppose to be leashed but well behaved dogs (line my dog) could roam without. It's gated BUT has an open entrance. HOWEVER, there are times an enforcer would come by and ticket people if their dogs were not leashed (they barely came and of the years we were there I've only seen in like three times). And occasionally there will be people playing soccer on the field and so the dogs would just be playing in a smaller section. The field so it's very clean and the grass is maintained. It has a track around the field and I would do my laps as my dog either played on the grass area and or followed me as I do my laps and got exercise in too. It's changed a little bit. Sometimes I'd see the front entrance locked. They are adding a garden to one side. And that I remember, I think there may be construction going on because the field looked half its size. Love this neighborhood field.
