THE HANGOUT (4.5 stars)…read more Couple years ago they put in place the dog parks - finally. North Park is such a dog friendly neighborhood - it makes sense to have a dog park. It's located at North Park Community Park - the north east corner (closest corner to the water tower). There is a big and small dog park section. I've seen these dog parks grow thru the years. The big dog park use to have grass and now and for the past several year it's just DIRT. The small dog park also use to have grass but now it's those weird dry grass stuff and dirt. The small dog park isn't as used as the big dog park. And if the big dog park is closed off for cleaning everyone moves their big dogs into the small dog park (which is tiny) and there isn't room for small dogs to play safely. A lot of regulars and same faces. My previous Pom enjoyed the normal community park as she was well behaved without a leash. Yes, outside of the dog areas dogs are to be leashed but many dogs that are well behaved out playing in the grass area. There are MANY respectful owners watching their dogs. Wednesdays some of the neighbor peeps meet up in the grass area. I bring my new dog there to socialize her and she refuses to leave. She will lay on the grass and won't get up when it's time to leave. I have a soft spot for this park as I've seen it transform from it being just a dump to what it is now. We heart North Park.

A hidden gem for littles, parents and dog owners in North Park…read more Decent size playground with a huge grassy field. I believe there are bathrooms too. The only thing this park is missing is shade and more parking. Other than that, it's great! There are two play structures, one for big kids and another for little ones. It's walking distance to a lot of restaurants and coffee shops which is a plus!

Kudos to the caretaker of this park because there's always overflowing trash bins for him to deal with. And it just wouldn't be North Park without the homeless. It used to be an encampment but the police have done a good job of shuffling them along - well that and all the puppies you'll see. The dog walkers have also done a good job of making them feel uncomfortable. There's also a dog park on the other side near the water tower.

There is tons of free street parking on the parks perimeter. The green space has a couple of picnic tables to sit, but it was basically an area that dog owners were using to play fetch with their dogs. It could be suitable for picnics, playing football, playing soccer or playing catch. The dog park is just a dirt area with a fence around it. It was packed. The playground area is on a bed of sand with rubber surfaced walkways. There is a bank of traditional swings, a bank of toddler swings, a large jungle gym with a bridge and some slides, a smaller jungle gym with some slides. and some things to slide and climb on. I am not sure if it is part of the park or not, but their is an ball field, that is in OK condition there. But it was locked up tight with a huge fence and no one can get onto the field. The bathroom facility was locked up too for some reason. You will find a desolate recreation center. I would assume that it is no longer operational or functional by the way it looks. The roof is in despair and the building is falling apart. This park has lots of potential, but has a long way to go. It seems to be neglected by the city. As it stands now, I would probably pass this park up and find a another spot to hang out.

It's super accessible with ample parking, and I love that there are multiple entry points and routes you can take depending on how long of a walk you're in the mood for. This park truly has something for everyone. There's a splash pad, basketball courts, a great playground for kids, and even a giant chess game, which is such a fun and unique touch. It's also an amazing place to walk your dog--I bring mine here all the time, and he absolutely loves all the open grass and the variety of paths we can explore. One of my favorite features is the set of stairs that lead up toward the residential areas and the dog park. If you take them all the way up, you're rewarded with really pretty views at the top, which makes the little climb totally worth it. Overall, Civita Park is clean, well-designed, and perfect whether you're looking to be active or just enjoy a relaxing afternoon outdoors. Definitely a Mission Valley gem!

There's also a row of small fountains for kids to play, run through and splash in. Cons: It's a really nice park ON A COOL DAY. Lately, with temperatures 10 to 19° above "normal average" - or maybe it's just the new normal - it's hard to recall the last time we got to experience a cool day. But here, the way the gazebos, tables, and benches are set up reflects a pretty severe case of denial that this is Southern California, and not quite within walking distance from the beach. It WILL get hot whenever it damn pleases, with or without notice. It did so in February already, in case you missed it. We came a few times for the farmers market. Both days were unfortunately " 80°F" her weather report, which in reality feels like 92°F, and we had to scramble to find a little bit of shade, so that we could eat our street food without passing out from heat stroke. We huddled awkwardly on the curb under a small tree. Other people passing by with food in their hands looked at us with envy. NOT A SINGLE PERSON sat on the readily available benches with tables, because they were in the blazing sun, yet lacked any shade. Never mind an umbrella, not even holes to put one in!! Denial much?? It's really sad, because it's a beautiful place. It just DESPERATELY needs more shade for the visitors to feel comfortable without clinging to trees or the bathroom walls.
