The past few years with my aging sheltie have shown me the delicate balance of veterinary care as both a business and as a partnership: I appreciate the up-front estimates and range of services or treatments for my dog, and I appreciate that they were willing to have meaningful conversations about quality of life, cost of care and cost-benefit analyses of each path. In the end, they were supportive of palliative care for pain, and were so kind, patient and supportive through the hardest day of my life with Neville: making the decision to end his pain and confusion even as he continued to wag his sweet tail and support me in my grief. I'll continue to bring my other shelties here, and I'll continue to work within our family budget and I know that QAAC will work with me to find the best path for caring for my beloved pets.

Just to preface, I understand that it is difficult to run a business and that people are truly…read moreinvested in the care of our pets. That being said I strongly believe that if you work with pets, you should have customer service practices and protocols in place. I was recommended to have my cats teeth cleaned and saved up for the procedure which ultimately ended up costing $1,478.29 for one of my cats that needed two teeth removed. On the day of my cat who needed teeth removed (this was her first experience with anesthesia and her first surgery) had surgery performed at 3:42PM (the office closes at 6PM). They additionally administered ketamine and buprenorphine at 5PM and had me pick her up at 5:30PM (the office closes at 6PM). She initially meowed at me at the clinic, and as soon as I got her home, she completely crashed. I tried calling the clinic multiple times and they were at that point closed. She was completely unresponsive to sound and touch, so unconscious that she urinated herself, and was shallow breathing with eyes open and tongue out. The discharge instructions I was given had one line about monitoring for vomiting, diarrhea or labored breathing, but this was not discussed with me during the discharge, and could be enhanced with a more detailed handout about things to look for during recover. I was in shock, traumatized and spent the entire night crying because I thought my cat was dying. And luckily I had a vet friend who let me know to look for a heart rate of 140-160 beats per minute and for open mouth ragged breathing. These things could easily have been in their own handout and reviewed before discharge so it would have been clearer to me what to look for and when to go to the emergency vet. They then left a generic message the next day asking how she was, and I had left messages about her state the night before that felt like they had not been listened to. So I returned their call and shared about my experience, so they were aware that I was deeply upset and traumatized by the situation. When I went in for a follow up visit, it felt like the vet tech knew that I was upset and yet they kept me in the public waiting area instead of bringing me into a room to ask me how I was feeling. So I started crying in the public waiting area, and was left there while they went back to get Dr. Dittrich. I want to uplift that Missy (front desk) was kind enough to see me crying and offer me tissues and a waiting room to sit in, but that was not offered to me by anyone else on staff that I interacted with. I then told Dr. Dittrich that I was not happy with the service, and she said she would connect with her business partner to discuss options. Two days later Dr. Dittrich called me and let me know they reviewed the chart and felt like there was nothing wrong, even though they had said to me they would not send animals home in that condition. And when I said "I did think you were going to bring back options from your conversation with your business partner", she became very hostile and yelled at me "What do you want? What are you asking for? You want the whole thing for free?" At which point, I replied "I truly thought the whole point of you checking with your business partner and reaching out to me would be to offer me a list of options, as discussed, of customer grievance plans." It could be the next annual visit for free, it could be 25% off of the services, it could be so many things, but to have no customer grievance protocol in place, and to not have a budget to accommodates for grievances, even something nice like a standard practice of a urn for people whose pets pass, or a small percentage off of a future visit, seems easy and standard. I will also acknowledge that they now have a practice manager Emily, who I felt like listened to my feedback. But when it comes to running a business, it seems simple and standard to have handouts to send families home with about when to reach out to emergency services, it seems straightforward to have customer grievance policies in place, it seems easy to train staff on when you see someone crying to offer them a room if one is available, and when I called Jason answered and asked me with a bit of hostility where I was calling from, and I was like "my house?" It just feels like the customer service has a lot of room for improvement, and I am hopeful for future customers that Emily has the support needed to create systems and protocols to make sure other clients are not treated with the same level of hostility that I encountered. And totally minor, they no longer offer nail clipping or sanitary trims as a part of wellness checks which is a bummer.

The staff was very nice, and I never felt rushed during the appointment, which I appreciated because my cat was already acting like I had personally betrayed him by putting him in a carrier lol They took their time answering questions and made the whole experience feel pretty low-stress. One thing I especially appreciated was how understanding they were about cost. They made it clear that taking care of yourself financially matters too, even when you're trying to do the best possible thing for your pet. That felt compassionate and realistic, especially since vet bills have a way of becoming big very quickly. The main downside was pricing. The price I was quoted over the phone for the senior package was different from the price I was given in person. I did call prior to make sure I knew what to expect (I called this one and a mobile vet to see what made the most sense financially.) I paid $400 for a senior package and I was also quoted around $1,100-$2,400 for a dental cleaning with possible extractions. I'm new to Washington, so I honestly don't know whether that's especially high or pretty standard here, but I wanted to include it because I had a hard time finding local pricing estimates online when I was researching. Overall, the staff and experience were very good, but I'd recommend confirming prices before the appointment over email! We got lucky and found a parking spot up front (kind of a tight spot), but if you're not as lucky, street parking is available. When we first walked in, what we noticed most was that it was quiet and peaceful. Our cat who is a nervous kitty out of the house seemed calm and just took in her surroundings. We sat in the waiting area with the clinic cat who was so open to belly rubs :) The exam room was small, but has a bench for sitting that can only fit 1-2 people comfortably. Our kitty immediately took to hiding, but the staff were very gentle with scooping her out from under for the exam. She received two vaccines and Dr. Aimee was quick and our cat seemed very comfortable hanging out in her lap during the exam. She answered all of our questions and we were happy with the care our cat received :)

I needed to pick up levitiracetum and apoquel for her regularly. (1) this vet has an online clinic they probably have a deal with, for many drugs it's excruciatingly overpriced. Meaning I pay 1/5th of the price of the seizure medication at my local pharmacy. When I told this vet to call in my dogs rx they said by law they could not. This is false. You as a client are allowed to pick up your rx anywhere you want to. I actually reported this and a few weeks later I was called back by LUV indicating they could all of sudden call in my dogs rx. While I lost trust in them, I appreciated that they pivoted and admitted it. But the pain continues. My dog needs her bordatella updated. She had surgery about 6 months ago from the same vet, And her wellness is only a week past one year , we visit the vet regularly. The annual wellness law is to ensure the vet has seen the dog in the last year to ensure they are prescribing medications on an animal they've seen.....LUV examined my dog pre-surgery but they say none of the visits count to establish vet-client relationship and won't do the bordatella without an annual wellness exam. We were there 6 months ago for her pre surgery work. We are there regularly. Last year when I updated my dogs vaccinations I paid more than $700 they added on a bunch of stuff we didn't need. They code things their way and read the law their way to add as many things to your tab as possible.

The professional ineptitude and desultory attitude of Dr. Stuart Spencer was nothing short of remarkable. (1) He took a five-second look--I am unable to use the word "analysis"--of my cat's nose and then laconically--I detected a yawn of complacency mixed with boredom--and solemnly declared that "he [not Dr. Spencer] has a precancerous lesion.*" Without missing a beat, he turned what had been a rather less than enlightening medical examination to the subject of surgery [removal of the supposed lesion] and how it, in terms of logistics and cost, would proceed. (2) I will not go into the ethical implications of a veterinarian refusing to see the dying cat of a client. [Whatever reservations we had had about his clinic had, all along, been kept to ourselves]. Nor recount the particulars of his soft-shoe sell of a highly improbable "dental package" for a 19-year-old cat in renal failure. He has been instrumental in the care and health planning for Chuny and Matisse by offering competent, well-researched, and practical advice in a collaborative way which has made us feel part of the solution, no matter how tough the situation. Doctor Spencer, the outstanding technicians and humans extraordinaire Katie and Kay, and the always cordial and efficient Jamesy, Melissa and Brandon at the front desk work well together and obviously like each other, and their patients benefit from that ease of communication and sharing of knowledge a great deal. We recently lost our Siamese 'child', age nineteen and a half. Over the course of the six months leading up to the final outcome, the QAAC team took turns to call on us and offer practical support by refilling prescriptions proactively and juggling appointments with specialists (Thank you, Jemesy and Melissa!). Kay took several hours to teach us to administer fluids and detect signs of breathing distress in the middle of the night, while Katie coordinated emergency care with the Greenlake Hospital quickly and efficiently ensuring, in the end, that Chuny got all the life saving measures that he'd benefit from. And when the life-saving options were exhausted, final arrangements were made with so much emotional support and warmth that I almost wish they could help us humans plan for the final exit, too.
