    Glaucoma and cataract surgery
    Hailey F.

Dr. Sheahan and the staff here are absolutely wonderful. My foster dog needed surgery on both eyes for glaucoma and cataracts. Dr. Sheahan thoroughly explained the process and what to expect before and after surgery. I appreciate that she offered more glaucoma treatment options than other doctors. We drove all the way from Orange County which often took more than an hour each way. It was totally worth it. Post-surgery, the doctor kindly answered any urgent questions even at odd hours. My dog's prognosis was very good and he's able to see again - which helped immensely in helping him find a permanent home. Thank you, Dr. Sheahan and VEC.

What's up: Our senior dog suddenly developed a cloudy eye with discharge! We were recommended by our primary vet to get it checked out by an ophthalmologist. Parking: Parking was available in their front lot. The building is located right on the corner of Valley Blvd and Cabrillo Ave (right across from Aloha Food Factory). Environment: Appointments are required. We called early in the morning and they were able to squeeze us in for an afternoon appointment. The office is well lit and comfortable; they also have WiFi and jars of pet snacks at the waiting area. We checked in at the reception desk, got our dog weighed, and were then shown to the exam room. After a short wait, Jocelyn came in to ask some questions as well as perform some initial eye tests. Dr. Chang came by afterwards to do additional tests and based on those these, he was able to provide easy to understand explanations of the findings as well as the next steps to take. Payment is made at the end of the visit at the reception desk. What was ordered: - Eye examination - Medical eye drops Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. Dr. Chang, Dr. Jaggers, and the staff were awesome. They treated our doggo so nicely and were able to determine what was bothering him. We were also really appreciative of how well Dr. Chang explained things. He helped put us at ease since we were panicking about our dog's condition. They are also very responsive through text messages, yay! Credit cards and ApplePay are accepted.

Dr. Sheahan is amazing! My dog has a bad eye injury and my best friend who's in the vet industry referred me to her. It was an hour drive for me but it was so worth it!!! Dr. Sheahan explained everything in such detail, but in a way us normal folk can understand it. She showed me everything going on in his eye, all the images, had me take pics with my cell from books that had pictures and write-ups of what I needed to keep an eye out for in the future (no pun intended lol) and she played a video for me to watch while they ran tests in the back that taught me how to test my dog's vision tracking. I really can't say enough about her and the care she gave my sweet Teddy! He was already feeling so much better the very next day! If your fur baby needs an eye doctor, you could not choose a better doctor to take them too!

We had the best experience here for our senior husky. The staff went above and beyond to help him during a time-sensitive scary eye emergency. Special mention--Dr. Jaggers was amazing. You can tell she loves animals, wants the very best for them, and knows what she's doing. She guided us through a very scary process, and I'm happy to report that our dog is doing great!

I would like to give this clinic 100 stars instead of 5. My cat has been coming to this clinic for a long time. My cat is under constant eye monitoring. Dr. Chan is a very competent and honest doctor. He explains things very well and is very friendly. You can't find this doctor anywhere else, he's the only one you can trust. The front desk guys and nurses are very friendly.

Dr Sheehan and her team put me and my dog at such ease! after a follow up with our general vet they said we should try to see if we can get an appt with an ophthalmologist before our next follow up. I called their Alhambra office but their next available wasn't until 2 weeks. I called their Pomona office and they were able to get me in within the next 2 hrs. They also had an open slot where the doctor would be in and out with other patients and they'd be able to squeeze us in if we couldn't make the 12pm spot since we had an hour+ drive from LA. We got there 1230 and were seen within 15 mins. My dog isn't the most comfortable at the vet but they were patient with him. We were able to leave the room since he's a bit protective and watch from outside with a peep hole (never had the opportunity to do that) Dr Sheehan educated us on my dog's melting ulcer and how severe it was. She wanted to make sure there wasn't anything lodged inside so we had to sedate my dog but they did it very quickly. Her and her team were also conscious of the costs and sedating my dog for the 2nd time that week. Her front desk team was also so so so responsive before I got there. They upped our eye drop meds from our general vet. I'd send in photos to their team and they'd review it within that day and give me a call. They really put you at ease with how much care they provide for you and your dog. After sending another set of photos and videos to them, Dr Sheehan had called me directly after a long day at the clinic to reassure my dog's eye looks good/healing. Although it's a bit of a drive, I can rest easy knowing my dog is in good hands with Dr Sheehan and her team! I'm glad I was able to find them via yelp/google reviews too!

    After the procedure

Took my 13 year old pug Bruce here for a consult. He had been suffering from a severe dry eye on his right eye. My prior vet just said to keep giving him artificial tears to help with tear production. Fast forward a few months later he started to grow a mass on the dry eye. Lots of gunk kept building up, took him to my new vet and was referred to Dr Tracy. During the consult she spotted the problem and gave me 2 options. Surgically remove the mass and he would have to go under or doing a cryo surgery. We opted for the cryo surgery. She performed the procedure very quick and I was able to bring Bruce home after about an hour! They sent the mass for testing. She put him on a treatment that had some eye medication and eye drops as well as some anti inflammatory stuff. His eye was healing nicely and noticed his eye was very glossy. A few days later I got a call from Dr Tracy with the results of the mass and it was benign! A big relief Had our post procedure check up today and when they were doing the eye test, the strips were filled with tears I almost cried lol. I remember a month ago when we did the test there was no tears to be seen on the eye test for his right eye. Thank you Dr Tracy for the constant communication and transparency throughout the whole process. Also big thanks to all the techs that helped out as well

Half of the front reception were welcoming but not the kind of intro a new client would expect. Almost felt as if reception didn't want to greet or talk to us so that was disappointing but we checked in for our appointment anyway. Fortunately, the rest of the staff and vet techs that helped inside the room were kind, patient and gentle when performing the eye exams on our yorkie. Our yorkie was not happy with the process but the exams were not invasive. Dr. Chang then checked our yorkie's eyes and thoroughly explained the issue our old dog was having. He took his time to answer questions and we feel confident knowing our yorkie is doing great overall. He does have cataracts as a result of aging but is natural for a 17 year old furbaby. We are grateful for Dr. Chang and the techs professional and caring attitude toward our furbaby. Knowledgeable, honest and I'd definitely come back if any of my pets have specific eye/vision concerns. Thanks for your time and gentleness on our sweet, little ole' dog =)

Different stages of Indolent Ulcer and what exactly is happening physically

If you have a pet with eye issues, look no further than Dr. Jagger. My 17-year-old Shih Tzu, Kuko, has been her patient for 1.5 years for chronic dry eye. Before seeing her, Kuko was depressed, his eyes were painful and full of mucus, and he even stopped his favorite hobby: sticking his head out the car window. Dr. Jagger didn't just treat him; she explained exactly what was happening and gave him his quality of life back. Recently, Kuko developed an indolent ulcer. Kuko could not open his right eye. The eye lid was also inflamed. Being a senior dog owner, I'm used to 'sticker shock' at the vet, but Dr. Jagger is different. She offered me three different treatment paths with full cost breakdowns. She didn't pressure me into the $1,900 procedure; instead, she respected my budget and helped me try a more affordable middle-ground option. It was a gamble, but thanks to her amazing skill, Kuko healed perfectly! To find a specialist who is both an expert and understands the financial reality of pet owners is a blessing. It's a rare find. She is someone who truly cares, and that is PRICELESS! Kuko is happy and comfortable again, and I am so grateful.

Our Benjamin lost his vision on a Thursday night. We found Dr. Sheahan next day and she diagnosed him with the cataract on right eye and lens luxation on left eye. She recommended we take care of both eyes while being completely open about the possible outcomes, both negative and positive. She was able to assemble a team that Saturday for his surgeries. She also mentioned that she's going out of town the following week but her team of doctors and staffs will be able to help us and that she will be in touch herself via text. Benjamin came out of the surgeries with vision back immediately on his right eye. Dr. Sheahan stayed true to her words by making sure that we were able to keep track of the recovery process. Dr. Chang, Dr. Potnis and everyone at both Pomona and Alhambra locations helped us measuring his eye pressures and check on healing of his scars, even seeing us on 4th on July. They sent us home with a print out every visit with clear instructions on how to administer several eye drops and medications. Thanks to all of their help, Benjamin regained visions on both eyes about two weeks after the surgeries. We have worked with countless vets over 20 years as pet owners, but nobody comes close to Dr. Sheahan. We are so grateful we found her and highly recommend her to everyone.

Eye ulcer healing slowly, needed more antibiotics and serum.

Location: Pamona Dr. Sheahan was absolutely worth the vary long drive. She was incredibly thorough in evaluating my dog's eye ulcer, which has been slow to heal. Her expertise as a specialist is rock solid, and the clarity and confidence she brought to the diagnosis gave me such relief. I had read reviews about other ophthalmologist locally, and they were all relatively inconsistent, which didn't give me great confidence which is why I opted for the drive. Dr. Sheahans reviews are high and consistent for a reason. She is very confident, articulate, and has integrity. Rather than rushing to recommend another surgery, she carefully assessed my dog--who currently has no squinting, tearing, or discomfort--and suggested we continue with antibiotics and serum. Her approach is conservative yet thoughtful, focused on healing without unnecessary intervention. Of course, she explained if things worsen, surgery may be needed, but for now we are on the right track. What really stood out was her teaching style. She took time to explain everything and even provided a resource that visually walks you through the healing process. I left with peace of mind, clarity, and I am grateful for her time and care. Highly recommend. .

Schmidt before his surgery. As you can see, his left eye is cloudy.

He is very knowledgeable and takes his time to explain things to you. I don't feel rushed when I'm talking to him. Other vets I've talked to, I feel that they just want to give my pets treatment, and want me to leave asap so they can get to the next patient/$$$ in their pockets. I did not feel this at SGAH. My cat was in for surgery, and after I dropped her off at 8:00 AM, I didn't hear back all day, even past their closing time of 6:00 PM. I was worried that something may have gone wrong. I received a call a couple of hours after they closed, telling me that they decided to perform the surgery on my cat at the very end of the day, so Dr. K can make sure he is not rushed, and doesn't miss anything. Unfortunately, he said my cat's vitals were dropping during the surgery, and he had to close up my cat asap. He got a biopsy of the liver, which was the primary goal, but he also wanted to check out other things, like the gallbladder, while he was in there, but he didn't have enough time since my cat's vitals were dropping during surgery. I'm glad that my cat survived the surgery. I feel that if my other vet performed this surgery, my cat would not have made it out alive. Dr. K was at SGAH performing surgery on my cat a couple of hours past their closing time (even some of his staff were there until 8:30 PM! when I picked up my cat). This right here says that he cares about your pets as just as much as you do. If not, he would have either rushed surgery or postponed it until the next day, etc. This shows that Dr. K doesn't clock out when 6:00 PM hits. He is there until all of his obligations for that day are completed. I'm grateful for Dr. K and the staff. Dr. K is very knowledgeable, friendly, and compassionate. His staff is also knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming. SGAH's rates are very fair and reasonable, which is why they are always busy!

I strongly recommend avoiding Vet Villa. 1) Vet Villa prescribed Carprofen flavored tablets to our dog for a painful condition. We were not instructed to keep the bottle far out of reach. The dog found the pill bottle, chewed through the plastic, ate all the pills and suffered an accidental overdose. This led to 2 emergency vet visits, gastrointestinal toxicity that kept us up all night for 5 nights, and large out of pocket costs. But we are glad our dog is still alive. The emergency vet told us they always counsel pet parents to keep this medication bottle far away from the pet, and that they have seen multiple similar overdoses. Vet Villa did not acknowledge my feedback to change their counseling practices to prevent this from happening to others in the future. 2) A skin biopsy was performed in a completely inappropriate fashion by a veterinarian who acted as if she had never evaluated a skin lesion before. I can speak to this because I am a practicing dermatologist. The vet's approach as she examined reminded me of a first year medical student evaluating a condition for the first time. I did not contradict the vet's recommendation and gave it a chance. After all, I am a human doctor, what do I know about veterinary care. As expected, the results returned inconclusive due to the incorrect sampling method. The out of pocket cost was significant. 3) Bloodwork was lost and had to be re-drawn -- no explanation for why it was lost. 4) The practice's own pharmacy does not share prescription records with the office. I was asked in a very accusatory way to provide proof of a prescription that had been continuously refilled by Vet Villa using their own pharmacy for several years.

Reposting -I agree with many of the reviews here. Long post, but the ending is worth it…read more The pricing at this clinic is outrageous. The staff appear professional, but the entire experience felt like a slow, calculated attempt to upsell me on every possible test--most of which had nothing to do with the reason I came in. My regular vet referred me here because it was close to home, and my cat needed a partial ear amputation due to skin cancer. All I wanted was a quote. Instead, the doctor refused to give any estimate until I completed a list of "recommended" diagnostics. Stage 1: Bloodwork -- nearly $700. Then suddenly my cat "had a heart murmur," and I was told anesthesia could kill him unless I pursued more testing. Stage 2: Full-body X‑rays + EKG -- another $600. Results came back normal. Great. But then came the next push: a heart ultrasound, because "X‑rays can't show everything." At this point, I had to ask myself: Do I even have a real choice? If the ultrasound confirmed a murmur, I'd be stuck in a no‑win situation: risk anesthesia or let the cancer spread. It felt like a manufactured dilemma designed to pressure me into more procedures. The doctor even guilt‑tripped me with, "If it were my pet, I'd do the ultrasound." That was the moment I realized how manipulative this was becoming. By now I'd spent over $1,300, and the ultrasound alone was quoted at $450-$600. Finally, after all of this, I got the surgery estimate: $2,200-$2,700 for a small ear amputation (see pictures) The breakdown was absurd--nickel‑and‑diming for every tiny item imaginable. Friends urged me to get a second opinion. So I went to an animal hospital on Figueroa. That doctor listened to my cat's heart twice and confidently said there was no murmur at all. He immediately offered to perform the surgery and gave me the price on the spot. $500. Total. Including overnight stay, biopsy, and medication. I was stunned. And furious. After being told my cat had a heart murmur, after being pushed into unnecessary tests ($1,700), after being quoted thousands ($3,000 plus) for a basic procedure... another vet told me the exact opposite and charged a fraction of the price. Mind you this was the price 7 years ago. I walked away feeling completely misled. Fellow Yelpers, be forewarned: don't let friendly interactions fool you.

I booked a wellness exam for klaus because everything seemed fine except he was having diarrhea…read more Came late to my appointment because of issues but they still took klaus in. The vet tech asked questions about him and then dr. Niu came in to check on him. Dr. Niu recommended some procedures and food items to take home. But of course with a price. As of now, im just glad nothing too serious. Dr followed up the next day to check on klaus. So far he is getting alot better.
