I have been donating to this DAV location for over 40 years. Today I had a van full of misc. items including a swivel upholstered chair. I was told by one of the workers the chair had too much pet hair to accept. I stated I would take it home and vacuum it and bring it back. Less than an hour later, pull up, not a single piece of cat hair, the workers look confused and next thing I know I am assuming the person talking to me is their supervisor...we already told you we can not accept this chair because it is not resellable. Too old. There were no rips in the fabric, worn yes. I explained her worker said too much pet hair, nothing about the condition of the chair. She was very nice, said she would talk to the workers.....having said that, will not be going back. Lots of other charities to donate too. read more

Scheduling an initial pick up, modifying the date and items, and the day of pick up - everything was so pleasant and professional. The drivers were super nice people and very accommodating. It's rough in there but got some good finds, took some digging but found designer brands and interesting furniture.

Sometimes they have something you want, sometimes they don't. Sometimes you drop in for fun and sometimes you must find something only your grandparents would have. Sometimes you wonder why you came, sometimes you're happy you stopped in. Sometimes you just need something horrible to wear to an "Ugly Christmas Sweater Party" and sometimes you don't. Sometimes you go in for one thing and sometimes come out with several other things you didn't know you needed. Here's an example... I went in for a cheap set of crutches and came out with a steering wheel setup for my Xbox 360 video racing game. See? I didn't even know I needed that and now it's sitting in a box in the corner of my living room. More stuff. I need more stuff. I still have room to walk through my house so I need more stuff. The DAV is a great source for hunting down those spcific, not so gently used, items. Old clothes for halloween costume, hard to find thingamabobs that nobody uses anymore, and occasionally that steering wheel controller for your video game console. This location is kind of stealthy as you might blow by it, staring right at the big building and think, "where the hell is it?" It was right here last time. Here's a tip, if heading north on Coast Hwy it's on the right, if going south it's on the left. It's the building that you see but don't notice. Walking into DAV is a time warp. Do people still wear this stuff? Ohhh.... this stuff would make great stocking stuffers. Mom, thanks for the tape deck and umbrella book ends. Awww, I love you too. I needed a Cosby-f ugly (space intentional)-Christmas sweater. I had failed in previous exploits throughout the week in search of. I'm always fascinated by how one person's junk is another person's treasure. While in this case, I am not referring to anatomy, I took a detour and checked out the respectable electronics section that included displays of the following signs - Hey, just like new! It really works! Windows Vista Included! DVD is just as good as blu-ray! Really? I even found a soccer/AYSO trophy for an Andy Hwang in 2006. Yeah, I put that one down. After following some hot mamas around, I found a rack devoted to Christmas wear only. Mind you, as I was making my mental triage of what is and what isn't, I was suddenly stalked behind with laughter and giggling. Mom! This is adorable! I realized quickly that they were gathering my mental purchases from underneath my wallet (we're talking $3 sweaters!). I became a hunter and started grabbing stuff to stay 5 steps ahead of them. Who's gonna win: the hunter or gatherer? Gawd this is bad. Unlike the Titanic, I was trying to stay afloat and ahead of them and took anything that was remotely interesting. With my treasures to sort in a quiet corner, I found another soccer/AYSO trophy in 2003 for an SumTing Hwang - ok - I didn't remember his name. Are you brothers?! Awful. Thus, I ended up with the red sweater and Angel with Horn over the word, "Joy," that you saw me wear at the Yelp event. Albert even tried to Lewinsky me for it and stoke my fireplace; sadly I wasn't ready with my stocking, but that's another holiday story. I will back, they do accept credit, but given how much you spend, cash actually will be worth it. Unless you're buying wonderful white elephant gifts for your work holiday party - then you might want to put it all on that credit card of yours. Merry Christmas. read more

The "volunteers/employees" did not greet me. They were outside smoking and just looked at me. I walked into there, and my hopes to find a good deal on clothes were trampled to the ground . The clothes were a lot older than I thought they would be and were OVER PRICED. $4.95 for a sweat shirt that was stretched and had holes on it. No, I don't think so. I can find something nicer/newer for 5 dollars elsewhere. No deals here. Definite MISS. read more

I know thrift stores aren't exactly pictures of organization, but it was like watching rabid dogs brawl over bits of fetid meat in a dump. DAV's stock consisted mostly of racks upon racks of shabby clothes with this grimy, bottom-of-the-hamper-for-years feel and a musty stench pervading through the room. Outside of shoes, there isn't a thing here I would feel comfortable putting on. Knick-knacks and other odds and ends were littered throughout the store, topping racks, and taking up shelving along the walls. Absolutely nothing was worth picking up. You've got people standing over your shoulder and grabbing things from behind you as you are going through some section. No joke. It happened to me while looking at DVDs and VHS tapes in two different areas. While moving the first layer of debris out of the way, someone would reach around and snatch something from the next layer, brushing past my ear. They were like ninjas. You didn't even sense they were there, and you just don't expect people to be THAT competitive. If you think you're going to find anything particularly interesting, forget it, the secret's out. Half the people in there were skinny jeans-clad 20-somethings with unnatural hair colors. The line constantly had about a dozen people waiting to have their purchases rung up. And as others have mentioned, just who do they think they are fooling with these prices? $80 for a stained and tattered wedding dress? $15 for a pair of ankle-high zipper boots? And I thought Good Will had a high mark-up. I mean, hooray for charity, but these were donations, right? They weren't the spoils of a garage sale bonanza the volunteers managed to talk down the price of at a cat lady's fecal-scented house, were they? On a side note, why is it that no matter what books people are selling there's ALWAYS a copy of "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" in the mix? The next most common would either be "The Da Vinci Code" or Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation." read more

I don't know, maybe I'm just getting older. The"thrill" of going to the thrift store hunting down vintage treasures has lost it's fun. back in the day nothing beat searching for crazy cool t-shirts, jeans, sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets. It was the "absolute rush" of finding a funky "fresh" wardrobe that truly expressed how freaking cool I was! Plus, the "Indiana Jones" gratification and satisfaction one gets after an archaeological dig. I'm SCARED...it's just not there anymore!!!!!! I'm, I'm... growing up :O( cloths should be purchased in places that are not stinky or require you to have shots from your Doctor. Anyway, my GF and I were bopping around Saturday having a good ol' time and decided to swing on by the DAV to search for vintage clothing infused with the scent of month balls with a mild note of stinky attic. However, I found just a bunch of marked up crappy cloths that were very lame. I swear, E-bay has ruined the thrift store. Now, the DAV people mark the cool stuff WAY up. Sure, you may find something here or there, but for the most part you're looking through the stuff people really, REALLY want to dontate! I mean, don't get me wrong, just going there to look at weird stuff the Goodwill offers UP will NEVER "go outta style" (are you catching my play on words here Yelpers?) but the days of actually spending money here may be coming to a sad close. An end of an era if you ask me :O( What's ironic is my GF found something she liked (board shorts for Summer), I usually have to drag her here. I scanned the entire store and nothing spoke to me...well, a strange dude by the hats was kinda speaking to EVERYBODY, but none of the DAV offerings "spoke" to me. I guess therein lies the lesson for today, you never know who will find something precious at the stinky DAV store. However, when I was in the Men's section, I did find an entire row of cloths that smelled of "old man" and "poo"... needless to say, my wallet was on lock-down! Check please! The fabric at the D.A.V. is phenomenal, sometimes it's less then a dollar an yard. D.A.V. has reasonable prices for a thrift shop; cant stand the ones that always over mark the price. Also, a good place for yarn, and thread. make sure to ask for discounts. Good hard working nice crew. Glad there is a D.A.V in my neighborhood. read more

We had a donation pick-up a couple days ago. Ulysses & Phillip did an outstanding job reorganizing their truck load so as to accommodate all our items. We really appreciated their hard work, professionalism & friendliness. We will continue to donate to this organization. I remember when this place opened up in the late 70s. I used to find tons of great stuff here, but now it's pretty exclusively clothing, glassware and crappy VCRs. Huge store, you can dig and look for a long while, but usually don't come away with anything. EXCEPT if you're looking for used clothes. In that case, it's heaven; but if you're after any hard goods, the quality is nil. Oh, and any really interesting items are waaaaaaay behind the cashiers on shelving you can barely see. And since there are only two registers open (if you're lucky) and there's always a long line, you feel bad asking to see anything back there and holding up the line. OK, enough of my rant. Bottom line: I haven't found anything really good here in years. read more

I'm not exactly sure why the ratings are semi high for this place. the stench is horrible... I get it its old "Vintage" stuff. but it smells bad in here. Employees are not the best but what can you say its the D.A.V. Some items are broken and way to dirty to even have out for sale. If you like digging for items this might be for you. but with this filth, smell and dirtiness its not worth stepping into for me . read more

I found some good stuff here a few year ago, but this time I was disappointed. I sometimes look for random items for art projects and find it really irritating when a store like this charges prices for some things that are comparable to what you would pay new. Their prices seem to have gone up, and probably as the result the store is way overcrowded. It is hard to see straight because everything is piled up and packed in, and a lot of it cluttered or poorly organized. It reminded me of what I DON'T want my house to look like and I walked out empty handed. Come on DAV lower your prices and clean out some inventory! read more

I love this place. I have found some of my favorite old tee shirts in here. They are remarkably organized in this store. Most stuff is where it belongs (sizes, styles, etc.) There is a high turnover rate in this store, so it is wise to check back often if you are looking for something. I dropped some stuff off at Goodwill a few weeks ago and had some baby items (high seat, stroller, baby rocker, baby jumper, etc) and goodwill couldnt take it. They recommended I call DAV and check. I Called DAV today and they said they could accept those types of items as long as they were in good condition. I drove 45m to them to donate these baby items and the guys in the back said they couldnt take ANY baby items. The reason they said they could not was because some baby items end up getting recalled/red flagged for endangering babies and for them to know every item that is recalled or not recalled is impossible, so they can't leave themselves open to lawsuits. That makes a ton of sense to me. The reason for the 3 stars is for the person who told me they could take them, which wasted 1.5hrs of my time to drive out for nothing. read more

Typical thrift store. Big, dusty and a few hidden gems here and there. My boyfriend and I stopped by here for the first time today. Our thing that we like to look for is record albums. Surprisingly the record selection was huge and filled with artist we enjoy: Zeppelin, Beatles, Clapton, Petty, grateful dead etc. all $1 each ! 27 albums and 2 CDs later we were very pleased! read more

This place is so great just because it's so big and I go there a lot. Unfortunately they got smart recently and started charging more for "real vintage" things or stuff that just looks nice. It's the prime stop on the Oceanside thrift store routine a friend and I used to do. Everytime I'm done here I always want to wash my hands real bad. My new favorite thrift store. Lots of inventory which changes frequently. For the most part, very cheap... Minus one star because some of the pricing is irrational... the last time I went, I scored an awesome suede and shearling zip-up coat for $6.99, but then other leather jackets are $40-50?? I always find things to buy here: beach shorts, pants to make onto cutoffs, bdu pants, bats for hitting rocks, steel toe turnout boots,etc. Prices are a little low but there's a fair bit of hunting necessary to find what you're looking for. My kids like to get Fanta in 3 or 4 flavors from the pop machine. Staff is friendly and effective; long line moves quickly. Best place to try things on is at the mirror in the men's department. read more

I got a nicer looking VCR. I think it was Toshiba and it was $20. They assured me that it would work and we even went back and checked it together and it worked for the first 3 seconds. But sure enough, I took it home and it did not work on any of my tapes. They don't return on electronics. Shoes, toys and some clothes are a great deal. I love looking through all the junk here. This review is for the drop off point only and not for the actual store. I am not very happy that they only accept stuff from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday - Friday, and then 9 - 3 on Sunday I think. The point is, what about those of us that work. I know I can call and arrange a pick up, but I don't have time because I am moving and the next available pick up is after Thanksgiving. So I need to drop off stuff now. I went last night around 5:30 and of course they were closed. So I left everything in my truck over night and went this morning even though I would be late for work. I arrived at 7:55 to see someone waiting at the cones in front of me. No biggy. So that truck and I waited, and waited, and waited. 8 came and went, 8:05, 8:10 nothing. So the first truck got out and moved the cones and went in to drop it off with out their help. Of course I followed. Then the workers came out like they were suprised to see us. Fantastic bargains and friendly staff. There can be a long line checking out, but it is worth to get the deals.

When the store was closed for the virus shut down, they had a chance to get the store organized and cleaned up. Now that they have been open a while, the place has gone back to being a big mess. I also want to address a long standing problem they have. Other thrifts like the Assistance League have a standard book price. Hard backs a dollar and paperbacks 50 cents. Brother Benno also has the same pricing. The DAV has some random pricing structure that just creates a wall of old overpriced books that just sit. Same with record albums. Way too many junk albums all priced at 2 bucks . Both books and records should be cleared out every month and sad to say, recycled out. The store really needs regular daily straightening up. The clothing seems to be the only thing that is organized. Maybe they need to get more volunteers or REAL veterans to work there. I will Support the assistance league, Brother Bennos, Womens Resource Center, Bread of Life. Anything is better that the DAV. read more

Gotta say, I love this place. You never know what you'll find. We stay in a rental house here and I'm always in need of wine glasses or a platter, etc. and this place and their prices are perfect for that. And then of course, if I'm in the mood, I'll check out the racks. However, there is only one mirror in the place and no dressing rooms... I've also found some good shoes at good prices. Weekdays are far mellower than the busy weekend, but I go whenever I can. read more
