Stopped here for a quick meal for lunch around 3:30pm, and there weren't many people inside. We sat by the bar, which was the only option in this small pizzeria, and we had one traditional pizza with mozzarella, ham, tomato, arugula, and mushroom. It was served hot, and the price was not bad (~7-8euros for one entire pizza), but I did not like the mushrooms at all. I hate marinated shitake mushrooms, and having them on a pizza does not make it any better. The smell is pungent, and so is the taste. While other kinds of mushrooms have a milder flavor that brings out the meat flavor in a pizza, shitake mushrooms overpower the rest of the flavor of the pizza. Even when removed, I can still taste the residual mushroom on the pizza. The rest of the toppings were average, but the crust/dough was nice and crispy and hot. A super small place, popular where you can find any type of people. For sure they do not cook a pizza. It is thin and ingredients are average. Do not expect a gourmet experience but mostly a dive into the people. The personnel is nice and used to tourist. It was nice more for the atmosphere that the food. If you're visiting Madrid, you will undoubtedly need a tapas break. For as good as it is, it's super rich, and you just want something different after a few days. For moments like this, Vesuvio hits the spot with some solid pizza that's part Neapolitan, part New York, but all Spain. It's small inside, but if you come early (1:00 PM), you should be able to grab a spot on the wall or "bar." There aren't any tables inside, but there are plenty of stools. The pizza itself is pretty good! It's no Da Michele (Naples) or Juliana's (NY), but it's pretty decent! We had the tomato/cheese/onion and the four cheese, and they both hit the spot after way too much tapas. They don't use a wood-fired oven here, so don't expect the burnt goodness that comes with that, but hey, you're eating pizza in Spain. The service is friendly, and I love the character of the place. They don't have WiFi because they'd rather have people talk to each other, and they have a phrase of the day that they write something profound on. If you're a high roller, they'd highly prefer if you didn't use bills over 500 Euro, but what place wouldn't? They don't have slices, but the individual pies only run about 7-8 Euro. You'll be ok. When you need your tapas break, and you will, Vesuvio can make it happen with pizza without making you have to turn in your cool traveler card. read more

Do not go here. this pizza is one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. I thought that it was going to be amazing as we waited a huge line and saw many reviews about it but it wasn't. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I ordered a salami pizza and the salami was PURPLE. I don't think ive ever seen that. It was very weird. the only good thing about it was the garlic bread. It definitely has much room to improve. read more

Yes! Just what was needed on our final day in Madrid. We made it in early (around 7:30 pm) for dinner, and they were not serving pasta until after 8. Since Madrileños eat pretty late, we had plenty of room. Note that the pizzas are personal size, so each person in party can get their own. They don't have jalapeños to add on pizza (notice a theme in my Madrid reviews? ) but did have the traditional pepper flakes that are ground up more than usual. Good pies! read more

Our last night in Madrid and my brother and I stumbled upon this Italian place that had people lined up for it. After 9 days of Spanish food, it was a nice change of pace and the pizza guy tossing the dough in the window looked like an expert. This is a small place with maybe about 25 seats at two long bars. We waited in line for perhaps 25 minutes before we were able to snag two seats together right next to the door, but the food was definitely worth it. If you just want pizza to go, you can order from the pizza-tossing guy at the window, which people were doing the whole time. This place was packed and busy! I love gnocchi so we ordered that with Bolognese sauce as well as the #9 pizza with tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms, jamon, and olives. Both were AMAZING! The pizza is on the smaller side, but enough for two people if you also get a pasta. Italian food made authentically since the Italians who opened up this business in 1979 is a definite must if you're in the mood while in Madrid. read more

The pizza is very warm and you can tell its so fresh. It is a great place if you want an amazing dish.

I've been waiting 17 years to return to this place, and it was every bit as good as I remembered! My 14 year-old daughter was not convinced that a pizza place would be worth the hike from the Mercado San Miguel. She later admitted that she was wrong.. that's saying a lot! Incredibly delicious pizza- little bit of char on top, crispy on the bottom, and not skimpy on toppings. A regular customer encouraged me to try his tiramisu, which convinced us to order our own. Whenever I make it back to Madrid, this will be one of my first meals. read more

Very happy with what we ordered here. Very tasty, quick, and great service. Server spoke english and provided english menus and was helpful in ordering. Food arrived quickly and was delicious. My husband ordered two panzerottis and i had a calzone and panna cotta. Both of us were haply with our meals. The server also suggested two wines for us from Italy and we had a glass of each. This establishment is also listed as Pizzeria Vesuvio. This place is one to consider a hole in the wall: Very small!!!! Capacity of only 20 people at a time. The establishment is narrow and long. There are no tables but only the main counter/bar to the right and a one-foot wide shelving that serves as an eating place. Consider it a pizza bar. The pizza is Ok. Not the best. Not the worst. Payments are in cash only!! No credit or debit cards accepted. I have to admit I was a bit skeeved when the pizza maker handled money from a customer and then went back to making the pizza dough disks without washing his hands. While there are innumerable things to love about Madrid, an abundance of great pizza spots is not one of them. Vesuvio, however, is one of the few that breaks this rule- quick, delicious, piping hot personal pizzas that would be good even in New York. The ingredients are undoubedly fresh (the cheese being a gooey highlight), and the ambiance cozy and casual. Definitely need to come back here to try the pasta! read more

It turned out to be excellent... mozzarella, mushrooms, pepperoni and topped off with fresh basil! Less than ten minutes from order to payment (very unusual in Spain). Best pizza in Madrid- on most pizza you get in Spain the mozzarella is a little off. Not here. It's chewy, stringy, and tastes right. Plus, the restaurant setup really adds to its success- the street window makes it always a great option. Oh, and inside seating is a crowded bar, but people are always coming and going so you never wait long. You can drink beer (and smoke when I was there), ie. adults are welcome, not the way American pizza joints market to children. I ate here once, sometimes twice a week when I lived in Madrid, the ravioli and lasagna are killer choices as well. I started calling in my order so it'd be ready sooner, and I never knew if they'd understand me right. It got so they knew it was me, and my revolving list of favorites- if you're ordering pasta, don't skip the bocconchini, either. There's also a nice dining room in the back where you can sit down and order from their Italian menu, I don't think they serve the pizza there, of course that was ten years ago. I have many wonderful memories of bringing my friends here, always leaving well satisfied. I lived just a block away on Hortaleza, and I was so grateful to have this place right nearby, it was really my kind of place.
