    Lobster tail with chocolate cream

A much-loved institution in the Rome area, the Franklin Hotel offers mostly terrific food and friendly but painfully slow service. The restaurant is large with many floors. It's a popular option for private parties, and indeed on the day we went there for a weekday lunch, there was a private party. My husband, who grew up in the area, recalls that the restaurant seems to be chronically understaffed. Though we arrived at peak lunch time, I noticed that there were at least two or three parties who arrived after us but who got served before us. Perhaps they were regulars who got VIP treatment. Normally, our being repeatedly overlooked wouldn't have really bothered me, except for the fact that we had two very antsy toddlers who were getting increasingly restless and I was getting increasingly wearisome of their antics and finding new ways to entertain them--even while there were two TV screens ahead. It was sort of odd that our server was often apologetic during the times when she would arrive with something, but totally forget us. At one point, I wasn't sure whether to get up and order a lobster tail pastry directly from the dessert display case or whether to order at the table. Shortly after I decided with the latter, I immediately regretted it, because we had to wait a long time, yet again. Service issues aside, the chicken riggies and Utica greens were fantastic. The turkey panini was standard and forgettable--it was also unnecessary since the portions of the other items were substantial. Fresh complimentary bread was a perk, though even that took a very long time to arrive (again, other parties who arrived after us even got their bread before we did!). The large lobster tail with chocolate cream was probably one of the best I've ever had, with copious fresh filling and a flaky exterior. The display cake had many other options that looked mouth-watering and inviting, including numerous cakes and cookies. Definitely worth another visit, but not at a peak meal time.

Franklin Hotel is one of those Staples for visiting Rome NY. It's always packed whether it's for dinner drinks or the dessert counter. And there is a reason it is, everything there is delicious. We were seated in under 5 minutes. Our server was attentive with drinks and bread. Our first course was out in under 10 minutes and maybe another 10 for our entrees so the timing was just right for everything. My gf enjoyed her salad, I like my soup but my only issue for the evening is it was a little clear and thin for being Manhattan clam chowder (it's known to be a thick red broth). The mushrooms and ravioli were so filling and tasty and my couldn't finish her gnocchi and had to take the rest to go. I've had the desserts and love them but was too full to get any. First world problem am I right?

My friend and I were nearby and she told me their homemade Lobster Tail Italian pastries were amazing. We stopped by and they had other items as well for sale. They had several choices of cakes and sfogliatella and Pasticciotti also. I came home and ate 1/2 of my lobster tail, it was huge. The pastry was crispy and light and the pastry cream filling was the best I've had. I'm going to say it weighed about 1/2 pound, it was filled full of the cream. Good news is I have more to eat. I also bought a slice of the fruit cake with marscapone. I tried a small taste this morning . The cake was just how I love it, dense and moist, the butter cream was smooth and not too sweet Inside was the marscapone and fruit. For me, this was substantial enough that I will have at least 2 servings from this one slice.

This is a no frills, great service, excellent food place! Homemade desserts and fresh bread and Ron, our very capable and personable waiter! Loved everything about it and brought home a loaf of Italian bread to enjoy. The lobster tail pastry was the best I've ever had!

Food was fresh and absolutely delicious! I felt like I ate a home cooked meal. Hands down only place where you must eat while in Rome.

Wasn't really put together well. Soup, shrimp and crab bisque, amazing, as previously enjoyed. Not salty at all. Salmon with mustard sauce special was excellent. The waitresses were still nice but clearly exhausted. It cost too much, frankly - for what we ate and the experience. We do enjoy the scenery there at the dam and nearby at Delta Lake. It's nice to see and hear the water in Spring.

Struggled with rating and review and want to try again during the week or on Saturday rather than on a Sunday. We placed our order and most of our party ordered sandwiches rather than a breakfast entree only to find out 40 minutes after our order was taken the chef was no longer going to offer lunch on Sundays. This should have been indicated by wait staff at a minimum and not 40 minutes after our order was taken. Menu that was given did not indicate that breakfast was only option on a Sunday. Additionally, they were out of several of the breakfast items so now our choices were limited. Had we known sooner we could have left and gone to several other restaurants for lunch. To top it off they ran out of creamer and we were given a carton from kitchen of half and half only to have wait staff grab container. Additionally, silverware that was wrapped in napkin was dirty and there was an added secret ingredient of a long strand of dark hair on syrup dispenser mind you none of us have long dark hair. I ordered an omelette which was OK and nothing special with home fries that had so much pepper I could not eat it. The toast was good but did not go there for bread. Just very disappointed after all the glowing comments on facebook

The Tavern on the Gorge boasted a friendly staff, good bar food and a welcoming atmosphere with a good assortment of beverage offerings. I happened to catch this place during a night whereby they had comedians from NYC. The comedians were very good and got plenty of laughs poking fun at the Afirondack lifestyles and values. The patrons appreciated this ribbing and a great night of unexpected fun was a much needed release for me and my wife. We will return on our next trip to the North Country to recapture this homespun experience.

Chalk it up to Upstate, NY doing what Upstate, NY does best: Cold Beer and Chicken Wings. And in…read morethis case, it should be Chicken Wings first and cold beer second. You can certainly pull up a bar stool and drop a Utica Club in a can or get a Saranac draft. No issue there. But what you really want to be doing is ordering wings. Seriously...get in car...drive to Prospect...order wings. Look, you can get caught up in wings from Buffalo, Rochester, New York City (not SF because there is not a good wing in this entire city...although at least Kezar makes an effort)...whatever. They all take a back seat to what you get in almost every establishment in Syracuse and Utica. Let's put it this way...it's HARD to be at the top or near the top (which Tavern on the Gorge is) in the wing category in Central NY. Just WAAAY too much competition and people in CNY like their wings. But Tavern on the Gorge...they get a high seat in the Top 5 category and my debate upon leaving the bar was whether or not they were number 1. Wing sauce is apparently a tough thing. I don't think it's a tough thing, but to most bars and restaurants it's essentially the toughest thing they must do. NOTHING varies more establishment to establishment than a chicken wing. Certainly there are some places trying to put their own spin on it (90% of these folks are just making a mistake btw). Not a good idea fyi. The wing sauce at TOTG is as close to perfect as your going to get. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get differing opinions on wing sauce. But in general, the diehards know the base recipe and an ingredient that can have a major impact is butter/margarine. So those wings sauces you see that have sort of a heavier texture (heavy being almost creamy)...they crank up the butter/margarine. Not a bad thing. The place in direct competition with TOTG does this and those wings are ridiculous as well. But TOTG does things a little differently and what you end up with is a sauce with slightly less creaminess and amazing tang. And they don't skimp on the heat...in fact, they dial it to perfection. Don;t worry about going in and having to order mild because you don't. If you don;t want to go hot...go medium...that's fine as well. But just know that Upstate does it's wings the right way...in a fryer, with ridiculously good sauce. TOTG has it nailed. Great place to grab a couple of UC's or a Saranac and eat wings. These are great wings. Period.
