My six-year-old granddaughter had a knot in her hair so severe that we were honestly prepared for the worst--we thought she might end up with a buzz cut in the back. Instead of taking the easy way out, the stylists treated her with such kindness and respect. They spent several hours patiently working through the tangles, even providing her with hot chocolate to keep her comfortable while they worked their magic. After a thorough treatment, steaming, and a careful trim, the results were absolutely fantastic. Most importantly, my granddaughter was thrilled with how she looked. They turned what could have been a traumatic experience into a wonderful afternoon of pampering. We are so grateful for their skill and their compassion. Highly recommended! read more

This will be the third time I've been to Versus and finally, Finally, FINALLY I'm walking away happy. The first time, I had my 3A/B curly hair straightened by an intern. She burned me multiple times and ended up needing advice about heat temp and technique by the manager. She also tried to post before and after results of my hair even though on the form I signed when I first came in I specifically noted that I didn't want to have my pictures on social media. Afterwards, I asked how I should upkeep it and she just said to wrap it. I asked how to do that and she said "I don't know." I looked like Kate Middleton with a bad blow out the next day. The next time I came to just get a trim. The stylist only asked one question about if I was allergic to rosemary (even though I already wrote that in the intake form). She also parted my hair directly in my face and left the store (like actually clocked out) while I was under the hair dryer and told someone in passing to ring me up in 15 min. Last but not least I got my hair finger coiled and to be honest I was for once extremely happy with the result. The stylist answered all my questions and I was left very satisfied despite taking three hours. The only reason I've come back is that I have a bday gift card I'm trying to use up. Otherwise I'd never walk in again. It shouldn't have taken me three different services by three different stylist to be happy. read more

Really disappointed--this is now the second time our favorite stylist has canceled on us the day before. We ended up booking with someone else for a 9am root touch (coffee was great, at least), but the color didn't even come close to covering the roots. We finished the peekaboo root touch by 10:30am... and then she was left sitting under the dryer until 2pm with no communication. I finally had to go up to the front desk to ask what was going on and share that I wasn't happy with the results. They did offer to redo it, but after already being there for 5 hours, we just couldn't stay any longer. We moved forward with the blowout, which turned out great, and still tipped--but overall, we left feeling really let down. This has been the only place we've trusted for our daughter's curls, but if we find somewhere more reliable, we'll likely move on. read more

I sent my daughter for a curly appointment. She came home with absolutely no curl definition and product sitting on top of her hair. With further inspection, her scalp wasn't even dry. That's a no no to send someone out with a wet head. She was so i shock she didn't even know what to say. I have pics and they are horrible. Wish I could give a better rating since my stylist was friendly, sweet and polite and the salon seems to be providing full service - for curly hair. I called ahead of time before I purchased a Groupon for partial highlights, cut and blow dry. I specifically asked if anyone is good at doing a butterfly haircut. They said my stylist (remains unnamed) is. When I got there, not only was my stylist asking how to cut my hair in layers, someone had to jump in and cut my hair momentarily to show her and watched her for a few minutes. It felt like I was a practice session at beauty school. My butterfly haircut wasn't it at all. Additionally, I asked for my partial highlights to be *darker* than my already brassy highlights. My highlights turned out to be even lighter (more blonde!) than my existing ones! They also tried to upsell by saying that the partial highlights didn't come with toner and that will be additional $60. I haven't heard of any salon that didn't put toner whenever they color your hair. They should have just disclosed it on their Groupon offering. read more

I was looking for an affordable salon locally that specializes in curly hair. A friend from church recommended Versus to me. This was my first time getting my hair done at Versus. I saw Alé for my Versus curly cut (level 3). She was very personable, communicative, knowledgeable, explained all the products she planned to use in my hair and why + application techniques, and didn't rush through any part of the service. I plan to go back to Versus in the future and see Alé again as my stylist. The shop was also very clean and all the other stylists and staff were very friendly. The receptionist Mackenzie was also very helpful with getting me checked-in for my appointment and checked out at the end of my appointment. Definitely recommend. read more

Introduced by Versus salon via a Yelp Elite Event, I was excited to book with them. Ale' gave me a great curl consultation at the event and encouraged me to use moisturizing products but otherwise acknowledged that my little TWA was growing nicely. We discussed an undercut and style for my future appointment. Fast forward, Versus had to close for repairs so my appointment was postponed, bummer I had an event coming up and was looking forward to a refreshed style. Fast Fast Forward, I received a phone call from the owner herself to rebook my appointment! Great! Over the phone was discussed my hair and she encouraged I receive a "Curl Transformation." On the website it's described as a wash and go tutorial, which I didn't read before hand (shame on me) I wish I'd been more informed. I would have opted for a curl treatment instead. Now to the appointment. I arrived at 9a, checked in with the receptionist. She was pleasant yet barely visible, the front desk is hella tall. Would be lovely to be able to see the person greeting you. I took a seat while I waited for Ale', I sipped my tea. The salon was definitely under-construction. It didn't have the sparkle it had at the event. Hmmm... Beyond the construction, the salon just wasn't very clean. There was hair on their Versus rug, and the station Ale escorted me to, seemed to be lathered in left over product. For me that's a star, I definitely love a salon for its good scents and cleanliness. After Ale' draped and toweled me, we moved to the wash bowl. She did an excellent job describing products and checking for possible allergies I may have to their ingredients. The wash was nice. A quick condition and some product to enhance my curls. Followed up by a super hot 10 minutes under the dryer. After those blistering 10 minutes, Ale discovered a not so defined fro so we moved back to the wash bowl to rehydrate and attempt a different set of products. Another 10 minute dry and she finished with the diffuser. While diffusing Ale' kept mentioning that I should do weekly deep treatments to moisturize my hair, she also mentioned some parts of my hair were dry, but later followed up that I in fact have multiple curl patterns so it in fact wasn't dry. (Something I mentioned in my original curl consultation) Hmmm... Overall the appointment was okay. I wouldn't say I left with TRANSFORMED curls. Just a regular wash and go which I'm pretty familiar with. Like I said I should have booked a treatment appointment instead. The curl transformation was $55 + $5 service fee and discounted 20% for booking at a yelp event. So $49 in total. In conclusion, I'm not sure who I'd recommend Versus to. Maybe strictly curlies with longer curls. I left feeling similar to how I walked in and for $50 I wouldn't rebook this service. read more

I did the devacut. Jasmine was wonderful. The salon requires masks for everyone and is very clean and organized even when it says it is under construction. The devacut leaves you with beautiful curls that lasted a few days(honestly probably would have lasted longer than that but I got a head cold so I needed to overhead shower). They cut your hair dry for the devacut which is unique. They also keep your hair wet to keep the curls. I got lots of compliments on my hair. I'm not sure if I prefer it straight or curly but it was fun to try something different. read more

Ari was very thorough and informative. She explained processes and informed me on the products she was using. She provided recommendations, and wrote down the names of the products she used. I told her I was extremely tender headed and she was very careful with my hair. I needed my hair to look like Dolores from Encanto and she did a beautiful job. She also colored my hair. I included a photo of me a week ago to reference the hair. If it wasn't for Jazmine making my hair adorable I wouldn't have been able to pass for Dolores. Ok maybe since my face resembles but still. Overall a good experience. I wish there were evening hours as not everyone can get a cut during 9-5 working hours. Went with my daughter to get a hair cut for me and a silk press for her. My daughter got her hair straightened first which took a couple hours. It turned out great! I've had a couple of services done so far at this salon. Shells has been my stylist both times and she is great! She's very knowledgeable about all things curly like cuts, products, style and etc. She's like a curl wizard!! So let's talk about my services: First service I got was a deva cut. However, the cut looked no different than any other cuts I get from my regular stylist. Meaning with my 3 hair patterns (curly, straight, wavy and it being fine) deva cut wasn't REALLY the best cut for my hair and did not resulted as such, but yet I was given the cut anyways and paid for what looked like a regular cut. Second service was Pintura Highlights. I was excited about this because it's been 3 years since I had color. And since this technique is designed for curly heads, it's supposed to be safe to not to damage the curl patterns but this service is expensive $$. I wasn't completely happy with the color but I'm giving it a week to see if it will grow on me. What I can say about this place is, that it feels like they want you to come in and get service, but they don't REALLY care about your overall experience. Everything is an up charge! If they use any Deva Curl products i.e shampoo or styling products and you did not get the Deva no poo transformation service, you will be charged for one. I strictly use Deva Curl products at home and its a bummer that even though I'm spending $$ they won't use these products in my hair. I think Matrix brand was used on my hair and I HATE that brand!! It makes my hair feel yuck. Also, both times I had to make a 50% deposit on the service when I called to make my Appts. They will give you 24 hours to come in to make the payment if you are not ready to make the payment over the phone, but believe me they will cancel your Appt ASAP! Shells is great and this is no way a mark on her service, it's the salon practice of doing business that makes me very disappointed in the overall service. read more

Pretty disappointed. I asked for volume and length as I had been growing out my hair for the past year and was really happy with it. My hair barely passes my shoulders after the stylist was done. I've had deva cuts done on my hair before Covid multiple times and I've never had anyone do my hair like he did. He raked and yanked through my hair before cutting. I have knots? That's fine. But why proceed to continue doing the same thing after asking me if I'm tenderheaded and I answer it really hurts. It felt like l was getting my scalp waxed as I just sat through this process. My stylist was a bit confrontational and hypocritical. He asked if I had devacuts before and I told him - many times before Covid but no one has ever cut my hair like this. His response was, "Oh, I'm not arguing with you". And proceeds to tell me that there's no one way to cut curly hair but the way he was doing it was the right way and the way they were taught. Sir, neither am I arguing- you asked me about my previous experience and that's what I was sharing with you. Another disappointment was the lack of professionalism. I have contact dermatitis and have allergies to certain chemicals often found in beauty/ hair products. I mentioned this when I first booked my appointment online. I also filled out their questionnaire in the salon that asked about allergies. When he proceeded to wash my hair, I stopped him as many shampoos have these ingredients and I felt the need to remind him that I have allergies. He wasn't prepared for this and didn't read the sheet I filled out before starting our appointment. It would've been catastrophic had I not literally said something to him before this step. What is the point in having these forms online and physically if the stylist isn't going to read them? When we were done, he said that my hair still touches my neck and my hair will be bigger and more voluminous the next day... so I will have an afro now instead of the length I've grown. My hair is about the same length it was LAST June. I am so disappointed and not looking forward to another year of growing out my hair to get it to where I'd like. I've been very fond of my natural hair but I'm so disappointed with this outcome I'll most likely have it up and even considering braids until it grows out. *also, please do not tell me that curls are two inches longer when they're wet. I'm not living my life with slopping wet hair 24/7. read more

My stylist Ale was so easy and fun to talk to and she was very informative, educating me on how to take care of my curls. Only a few days before the session I had a big chop done and had it donated. So I needed my hair to be shaped and evened out. Before the session we discussed the goals for my hair, afterwards she did a dry cut and then washed and put all the products needed for my hair while I was in the sink. We did an air dry and then trimmed a few pieces based on how my curls naturally wanted to fall. It was a great experience and my curls had so much bounce in the end. The thing that I really appreciated was that she gave a list of the products she used so that I could get them myself when I was ready Ale said that, once I straightened my hair, I could come back in to touch up the ends a little which I will most definitely do. Unfortunately, I could have done a better job with no formal training. I could tell by the blow dry that my silk press / flat iron wasn't going to be what I anticipated which is for it to be very sleek, shiny and flowy. Initially my hair was blow dried by hand but it wasn't flowy like I'm used to; I'm not sure what products were used but I do know at one point it seemed like a cream was used while blow drying instead of a spray heat protectant /leave in conditioner / serum because my hair was stiff. After the hand blow drying, I was put under the hooded dryer to "make sure everything is dry." I've never experienced being put under a hood dryer after having it hand blown. It didn't seem like the blow dryer or flat iron was hot enough. It was disappointing because it was on my birthday and I needed my hair done for a brand photoshoot I'm doing tomorrow. I think I would have preferred to take the drive to visit my salon in Maryland to ensure a satisfying end result. I was hoping to find a well serviced black owned salon in Virginia Beach but after coming here twice with two different stylists, I've left disappointed. However the first time was better than this most recent time. For the pricing, it's high only because this is what is charged / almost charged in the DC area where cost of living is much more expensive than here so I have not been happy paying the same / more for unfulfilling / lower quality results. GREAT salon for regular maintenance and care of ethnic and textured hair of all kinds! 4 stars though because I went to have highlights done for the first time and the outcome was absolutely horrible. My highlights are chunky, and stripy - not gradual or subtle at all. One of the more senior stylists attempted to correct it but the fix was only temporary (we attempted to even it out with toner). I'm now stuck with these skunk-like bleached chunks in my hair. I'll either have to wait for them to grow out, or just dye my hair all one color again. Despite the bad highlight job, the staff here is knowledgeable about hair are and maintenance. My appointment was for a devacut, I've never had one before and it was with Michelle. She was also very friendly and knowledgeable about the cut, my hair, and how to care for it. I booked an appointment for my daughter at this salon. We were first time clients and so I thought the salon would well prepared for us and present themselves in the utmost professional manner. I was terribly wrong! The moment I walked into the salon the lady at the counter greeted me and then offered to take our coats but when i turned around she got really snobby and said you can take them yourselves and hang them. I thought that was odd but I didn't say anything. Then the young man (stylist) came out and greeted us. He was very nice however he did not explain the differences in pricing nor did the lady on the phone who I had spoke with previously did either. I explained my daughter was a young child and she has curly hair. The lady on the phone said you could get the curl transformation which according to their site which is now available, funny how it wasn't available on the day prior to my daughter getting her hair styled. The price currently on the site states it is $55-85. The lady on the phone quoted me $65. So when I went into the salon and went through the process of getting my child's hair done, the young man said that you should change styles because that other style you picked would not last long. So I did per his advice. He didn't mention a change of price nor was their a price book listed at his booth. When I've gotten my daughter's hair done before for pigtails (4) that were twisted they did not cost $100.00. This was not an updo nor was it a fancy style nor was hair added (ie extensions). I literally gasped as a different lady at the counter told me this was the price for twisted hair on a child. The style itself took less than ten minutes and didn't require real work. I was absolutely appalled. I've been to upscale salons and this salon wasn't upscale to say the very least but to imagine simple ponytails on a three year old costing $100.00 is downright outrageous! To say the least we will not be returning but spending our money where it should be spent; preferably at a salon that is actually a reputable business with class and where professionalism is a must not an option. read more

I had been waiting to come to versus for about a year before I was actually able to book an appointment. I was really excited for their curly hair services, especially after seeing their work on IG! I went in for a Rezo Cut and a protein/steam treatment with Michelle. Pros: - I was seated quickly after arriving to the salon - My hair was mostly diffused by hand (with a Dyson hairdryer!) Cons: - Protein treatment was dripping down my face as I sat under the steamer. I only got a towel after waiting for 15 minutes and asking for a one myself (as other stylists stood around talking) - My stylist did not explain anything she was doing to my hair (what products she used, how to style my new bangs, etc.) so I had no idea how to recreate the look myself - I felt rushed out of the salon at the hair drying part of my appointment (after the salon was overbooked and rescheduled me to come in on Christmas Eve) Overall, I would not return to Versus for a curly hair service. My stylist kept commenting on how oily my hair was and how dry my scalp was, but never offered up any advice or insight on how to remedy this (or what she was doing to address it with her styling). Every other time I've had a curly cut at other salons, the stylist is much more engaging and I leave feeling as though I've learned something about how to better manage my hair. She explained what each product did and also made recommendations for methods to help with frizz. The other stylists and the receptionist were also friendly and welcoming.
