I am old, male, on Medicare, have a good Medicare Supplement Plan and am a cancer and heart attack survivor. I have a number of specialists I have to see at least once every year. Yes, I have to pay an annual fee to him for his services which is not covered by Medicare or my Supplement Plan. The benefit for me is I have a built in 2nd opinion from an excellent Doctor regarding all my blood tests, vaccines, and recommended treatments. He also has referred me to qualified specialists (when needed) that he personally knows as he is from Reno and has worked here as a Doctor for many years. These referrals have always worked out well for me. Another benefit is I have his personal cell number. I can call him directly if I have a medical issue or need a refill on a prescription. He handles my physicals and annual wellness reviews. I never have to wait in a line of patients at his office. I am able to see him usually on the same day I call him. I still travel extensively and though I have not needed him while traveling yet, he is available to coordinate my care if something happens or get my prescriptions replaced if I run out, or otherwise lose them. The peace of mind I have with having someone I trust to guide me through the complicated medical system I am experiencing as I grow old and more infirm is well worth my annual fee.

    I went to see Dr. Mathis because I am new to the area, and needed to find a primary care physician…read morestat. The first thing he tells me when he walks in is that he is a sports doctor. That is fine with me, my primary reason for going is the need for a referral to a specialist. He asks why I need to go to a specialist, and why I cannot just take pills for my issue. I inform him that I have been hospitalized for over a week twice in the past and have to get life-saving medications from the specialist 2-3 times a year. (If I could take a pill I would, it would save me over $3000. a year!) I told him my symptoms, which is affected by high altitude. He literally walked out of the office, and he didn't bother to order blood tests. Blood tests that would indicate very easily if I need immediate treatment. His office did send a referral. The office should inform potential patients that he specializes in sports medicine. It would save time and money.

    8/16/2023 First time…read moreestablishing appointment for the hubby. His last primary relocated to Colorado, and so he had to find another provider. Conveniently located less than a mile from house. Unfortunately, he had to fill out all the paperwork before even being seen by the provider..and he couldn't access his medications. To me ( the minus one star) because with my provider, the technology of Epic (My Chart).. makes me a loyal patient.. and all the info would be right there.. I ran over to Safeway to get a list of his meds. Ran back, and the staff let me back in to barge in on his appt.. Dr. Has good bedside manners, and seemed to be attentive to the conversation. She was even proactive on sending a referral for a specialist for his vericose veins.. Glad he has resources available and nearby.

Gave myself ample time knowing full well with traffic construction etc. Unfortunately I was still ten minutes late. I was not greeted friendly.I was greeted with.I can help you over here because I had expressed that I was ten minutes late. The receptionist we're so unfriendly and cold. Asked my name proceeded to tell me.I was over forty minutes late because I was supposed to be there.A half an hour early to fill out paperwork.Because I was a new patient. I responded with I was never told that. She responded we called you yesterday. I responded, I did not get a call. I did not know this. She looked into her computer and said, oh, wow, you're right.We did not call you. Then, she proceeded to say, however, you are still ten minutes late, so we'll have to reschedule.You the first available appointment is in june. My mouth dropped, I felt overwhelmed.I had taken the whole day off of work. I had also had some medical issues.I was dealing with that.I was putting off. The lack of compassion, understanding it was disgusting. I have two insurances.I work very hard to take care of myself.Thank god. I just think, what if it was somebody who had a serious medical condition?They had waited all that time.And got turned away because of a ten minute delay. Is this what our medical system has come to ..... And this is all in the pursuit to find a primary doctor....
