I have worn glasses for a good 20 years now…read more I have been to many different eye doctors, until I found Dr. Varner. I had grown disgusted by the in and out shops that the Mall and Strip Malls offer and being as I grew up in North Wales I was happy to find a Optometrist that was local (and accepted my insurance). I have never been treated so well at a Doctor before. Every time I visit I feel that his number 1 priority is me. I have been through 4 insurance companies since I started going there (thanks to work) but know I won't go to any other Doctor.

This is the first review I've written so that alone should be telling. Instead of realizing I needed reading glasses, he became very frustrated and rude when my eye sight became unstable during multiple exams. He gave me wildly varying prescriptions within a few weeks. I emailed recently about a contact lense credit I had at his office (he said he could have me seeing with contact lenses - he couldn't even get me in glasses!!). His reply email was shockingly rude as it had been a few years. I'm pleased to report that the fantastic team at CUNY eye center got me in reading glasses and wearing monovision contacts (eliminating the need for two pairs of glasses! woo!).

I first saw Dr Doyle more than a decade ago in another eye doctor office, and she is the person who…read moresolved the problem of me chronically getting the wrong prescription when getting new lenses. She found a way to prevent my eyes from automatically focusing every lens choice put in the machine and being unable to determine which one was clearer. She is resourceful and creative in understanding and solving problems. When Dr Doyle became temporarily unavailable, we went to her associate, Dr Sara Derr for many years and have had an excellent experience with her problem solving skills, as well. Our whole family sees Dr Derr, and has for years, including care for a grandson who had a cataract removed as an infant. This is a winning team of excellent eye doctors.

I made this fact extremely clear to the receptionist when I arrived. The previous year I had the same test and was billed a $40. co-pay because of a billing code misunderstanding. I explained this to the person when I arrived to make sure this would not occur again. They assured me it wouldn't happen again. A few months after my session I was surprised to get a bill for the co-pay. After many phone calls and buck-passing between their office and my insurance they refused to delete the charge. I'm still on the hook for the charge (the money is not the issue). I will probably pay it to protect my credit rating but I urge you to look for another provider with more honest and more competent personnel.

Unfortunately for me, he retired recently and a young newly minted optometrist now works there. Let me just say that if you're expecting even nearly the same level of eye care from the new optometrist, you will be disappointed. The new optometrist told me that I will have to go to another practice to get the complete exam that I'm accustomed to. She could really only do the eyeglasses exam - not the eye health exam. They sold me on using some piece of equipment that would allow me to avoid getting my eyes dilated for the exam. It was $39 out of pocket - no insurance coverage. I agreed to try it. The machine got a picture of the back of my left eye, but failed numerous attempts on my right eye. I don't think I should have been charged for this. Of course, they billed my credit card anyway. I think I'll have to find a new eye care practice after this.
