What an experience! This was our first visit with the establishment and we were beyond pleased. After having received numerous recommendations we finally made the trip and it was well worth the travel. The moment we arrived we were greeted by their delightful host, providing a light hearted welcoming introduction. For our first interaction it certainly set a positive mood for the visit! The service was wonderful, very attentive, and especially kind. The waitstaff was simply amazing. We even had the pleasure of meeting some of the back of house staff as well as the managers. The food was delicious. We tried the lemon soufflé pancakes and mimosas, mouthwateringly good by the way. The lemon soufflé pancakes couldn't have been better. Bursting with sweet citrusy lemon wonderment in every bite, topped with fresh blackberries, toasted almonds, and a golden drizzle of tart ripened raspberry syrup, we'd definitely recommend them. The mimosas were refreshing and happened to be quite complementary to the pancakes. Overall it was an astounding experience, we're looking forward to our next visit. read more

The food and service was descent. It was unfortunate that the waitress had to come back to our table informing us 4 times that what we wanted was no longer available. Beverages and food need to be updated on the menu especially when the menu is printed on paper and put in a book. The staff should also be I formed so they don't look foolish. We've dined at Veritas at least once a quarter for the past couple of years, and the food and service is usually very good. This evening's visit was not, which is unfortunate because we went with guests to celebrate a birthday. The chef has apparently changed recently, so too has the menu. The wedge salad is no longer available as an appetizer/ starter. One person in our party got it, and the edges were brown. This hadn't happened before. The (new) Pollo De Modena (chicken) was very dry and rather tasteless. The featured wine was, strangely, a super sweet dessert wine. Not something one would pair with an entree. The server was apparently new. She didn't know much about the menu or the wine list and, when asked questions, three times disappeared to seek an answers, returning several (8-10 minutes) later. She also let our waters go dry multiple times, and (not her fault) wasn't notified that we were celebrating a birthday until we were cashing out. The website states, "At VERITAS we believe in the power of exceptional service, remarkable cuisine and enchanting entertainment. We are dedicated to creating lasting memories in our community." Ohh Jackson...I wouldn't expect anything else from you. First of all can I say Veritas is one of those places that someone dumped a pile of money into the building and is recouping the cost by serving you terrible quality meat with a fancy name. They doll the menu up with complex names and descriptions so it sounds fancy but your actually getting a frozen sofo salmon steak that's about a $4 piece of meat and will make you have bubble gut for 2 days after until it runs through your system. I know it's cheap food because the price on the menu isn't high enough for it to be actual good quality food and then when your plate comes out it's covered in arugula. That's like the number one indicator that a restaurant is pretending to be fancy...if your comes out with arugula on the plate, you just over paid for your food. You garnish a plate with a few pieces of arugula not an entire pile. All in all this place will actually give you food poisoning. Stinks but Jackson isn't a fancy place so I wouldn't expect anything different. Y'all should change the name to Fugazi instead of veritas, because that's what this place is. read more

Mixed reviews. Atmosphere is Pleasent, live music was nice. Wine list is extensive, although not many by the glass available. We ordered sushi, filet & steak strip appetizers. The steak strips came on a bed of mashed potatoes. Hard to share and a little unexpected. Sushi tasted alright but kept falling apart. Each of the many different rolls. Steak was good, but for the price I expected better quality. Unfortunately, our server did not seem to have any idea what the temps of steaks were. When asked what "medium" would look like he stammered and ended up saying pink with grey, ya know, cooked but with pink. Was close to our answer. Order a French dip unfortunately the beef was extremely tough, dry, and thick pieces of beef vs thin. Would not order again. The salad my guest had was good. Service was solid. Not great. I've been here many times. I'm done now. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt to no avail. They've changed their ingredients in their polenta and chop chop chicken salad. I'm not sure if they've actually changed ingredients or if they're just buying cheaper ingredients, but neither are great. Their drinks seem to be measured less than a measured amount and it takes 20 minutes to get a drink. Every. Time. I've. Been. There. I love the atmosphere but the food, drinks and service suck. Terrible service, long wait for food, the meals themselves weren't good. Steak was very charred and not cooked properly, rice was mushy, mushrooms had absolutely no flavor. My friend's blackened chicken tortellini had only 3 small cubes of chicken. It's way too expensive for the quality of the food. Drinks were empty most of the time, took 30 minutes for my friend to get their beer. Only decent food was the bread and it took 20 minutes to get. read more

Visited from out of town - I was not expecting to have tasty sushi, but wow that's what I had. The sushi area is tucked into its own area on the side and the sushi chef makes it all fresh right there - she provided great advice on what to order. I had their Dragon roll and it hit the spot, even more so than the other sushi place in town. Beautiful atmosphere with multiple menu items I want to go back and try. I took the Key Lime dessert back to my wife, who is very particular about her key lime treats, and she was raving about it, so . Will definitely be back! read more

We came to their "soft opening" tonight with another couple - here's what we had: Walleye (very good), lobster risotto (very solid), blackened chicken tortellini (outstanding). In addition, their lobster bisque (good, but it had some unusual herb flavors), French onion soup (outstanding) and finally, their tuna sushi was very good (a bit spicy, but good). They have a good craft beer selection, and a decent wine list (but somewhat pricey). We will be back! read more

Went the night after they opened. The hostess and the waiter had no idea what corkage was or even if it was allowed. The interior was decent but the food was not great and the waiter needed a few more weeks of training There was this gross broken fish tank in the dining room that was filled with cloudy water. Either clean the tank, full in with fish and use it. Or empty it and remove it. But nobody wants to look at a broken fish tank with cloudy gross water. They had 6 people passing water...which was strange. After eating, we went to the bar and they didn't even have the basic bar set up. They couldn't make a White Russian...because they didn't have cream....couldn't make a Cosmo because they didn't have triple sec, and on and on. Our tab was around 160 dollars for 2 of us. They didn't understand the concept of corkage, so they didn't charge us to drink our bottle. Which was nice because their wine list is a hot mess. I suspect this restaurant will be closed in the next few months. read more

New favorite Jackson restaurant! We had a reservation for a Friday night around 7:30 with a group of 4. We had excellent service (shout out to Star!) and an awesome meal. We split crab cakes (2 per order) for an appetizer with our cocktails. For my main dish I had the ahi tuna with truffle potatoes and mushrooms. Literally delicious. They had live music as well which was the perfect volume and really added to the ambiance. So glad this place came to Jackson! Oh and I almost forgot to mention the bread. Soooo good. read more

This place brings a classy vibe to downtown Jackson! Our server Starr was a wonderful host and the food was amazing! The crab cakes were a great app and you can't go wrong with the bread. My sirloin was cooked to perfection and my wife's ahi tuna was prepared perfectly. The food wasn't only wonderful but the classy atmosphere brings a unique experience. To say we will be back is an understatement. I hope restaurants continue to pop up and restore a Jackson nightlife. Prepare to be spoiled. My wife and I along with our son and daughter in law went to two of the soft openings which had a few hiccups, no big deal still had great evenings. We have frequented several times since and have grown very fond of this establishment along with several of the servers. The food is top notch and the staff is fantastic. You will be greeted by pleasant smiling faces when you walk through the big front doors and be seated and waited on by more smiling faces. The atmosphere is very pleasant. I have to mention that Allen, Leland and Anna are three that have waited on us and have really spoiled us and have kept us coming back along with the fantastic food. I had such high hopes for this place. I had heard good things about it from many different people, and we were excited to try their Sunday brunch buffet. The restaurant was dead when we walked in, which made me a little nervous. I should have went with my gut and walked out. The food was horrible. Everything looked and tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. The area where the food was displayed was super dirty. There was dropped food all over the tables and it didn't seem like anyone had been in to check on it. I felt like we had wasted our gift card on a meal that wasn't even worth being free. Veritas is where you go to eat REAL food. Their sushi is amazing and as someone who is GF they always accommodate to create a great dish I'll enjoy. Everything is fresh and if they run out it's because they don't want food sitting around, again, it's fresh! For over a year now, I had always wanted to go to Veritas in downtown Jackson, Michigan. Living very close by, and walking past this restaurant many times, I often admired its cool-rustic facade, and mid-century modern interior. But alas, it was not up to its pricing and hype. First of all, we had a reservation at 5:15 pm on a Friday night; but upon entry, the host was on the phone for at least 1 minute, and did not acknowledge that we were standing there, obviously waiting to be seated. A gaggle of black-clad wait-staff stood by and did nothing. An older man with his mask only half-on (not covering his nose) placed candies and fruits in a cooler/display, with his bare hands. (WTF) Finally, a manager showed up, and led us to our table. He immediately complained about and explained why the windows were so dirty (they were not really so bad), as he sat us at a nice table with street view. While the over head recessed lighting was too harsh, the ambience in the rest of the dining room was tasteful and chic. The (women's) restroom was also spacious and clean, except for the actual rocks/pebbles in the sinks; at quick first glance, it looked like someone had vomited in the sinks. IDK if the sink-rocks are a design trend or an aesthetic thing or maybe for sustainability of water use? Either way, this is Jackson, not Phoenix; the sink-rocks should be removed. The service was awkward and both hovering and spotty. Our waiter appeared quickly with an assistant. Both of them wore masks, but also appeared unkempt, with a scruffy beard, and partially green-died, un-brushed hair in pony tails. They were physically awkward and hesitant in their service as well, with water glass refilling, bread distribution (weirdly per piece by tongs; a basket of bread was not simply left on the table), and serving from behind us/our chairs vs. perpendicular to table. My daughter and her fiancee ordered wine, and while the glasses were brought promptly, the wine was not in the glass, but rather, was 5 minutes later brought out in a small per-portion carafe(s) that the waiter then poured for each of them; slowing down bar service and making it uncomfortable at our table, as I had already been served a draft beer (i.e. all bar items should be served at same time to all guests at table). I asked about the wine mini-carafe thing, if it was a COVID protocol, but the waiter said no,"Our bar manager just thought it'd be a cool thing to serve (wine) in." Huh? What I am trying to get at here is that for its priciness, a restaurant like this should have FLAWLESS SERVICE; Veritas has D+/C- service at best. As far as the food (all menu entree's start at about $25 per), it was okay. Just okay. I had the Walleye, which was cooked well, but presented poorly as a lump, clump on my plate, surrounded by about 5 pounds of braised carrots and a scoop of box-quality rice. Uninspiring, nothing to rave about or savor over. My daughter had the salmon, which she ate almost none of because it was 'over-cooked and dry'; her fiancee had a pasta dish that he finished half of, but said there was little seafood in it. They are from Chicago, so maybe their standards are a bit high, but again, not at these prices. Long story short: Veritas needs to train its host staff and waitstaff better; Veritas needs to rethink its menu in terms of sides, portions, presentation, and cooking techniques. Veritas needs to fire its bar staff and understand the urgency in this segment in terms of service. There are plenty of restaurant choices in Jackson, and while Veritas is one of few 'fine dining' style, it does not live up to its name, 'Truth'! read more

Another visit to Veritas. This experience was totally opposite to our first. We were greeted immediately, server was at our table as soon as we sat down. Our bottle of wine delivered promptly. The food was excellent and amazing. I had the blackened scallops and my husband, the mushroom broccoli fettuccine. Just delicious and plentiful - we both enjoyed our leftovers for lunch the next day. Completely unaccommodating and unacceptably rude. I had reservations for three for Saturday mother's day weekend and we needed a table because one person in my party just would not be comfortable in a booth. They weren't particularly full, our reservations were before dinner rush, there were tables open, but they didn't accommodate us wanting to change seating. We left and won't try again, which is a shame because the food looked like it was going to be pretty good. Way to ruin what could have been a really nice evening out read more

A wonderful dining experience. The menu has something to suit most any taste. The restaurant trends to a more hip and upscale crowd compared to the predecessors that occupied the space. It should also be noted, the space is much quieter than before which now makes it suitable for business lunches, date nights, etc. Wine list is eclectic and top notch with nothing you would see at the local grocery store (thank you!). OpenTable app which makes getting a reservations convenient. Definitely recommend!! read more

We live in the lansing area and decided to venture down to Jackson for dinner as this place had promising reviews and we love checking out new restaurants. The restaurant itself was inviting with a fun, relaxing atmosphere. That's where the compliments end. I ordered a cosmopolitan, and it was awful. No big deal, swapped it out for a glass of champagne which then took 15 minutes to arrive. We ordered oysters, they were out. We asked about a couple of different fish items on the menu (walleye and the rainbow trout) both of which they were also out of. We both ordered a wedge salad which was pretty good, but for $11 each, was small and unimpressive. The main dishes is where it really goes downhill. I ordered the 8oz filet cooked medium. It came out extremely undercooked, had no seasoning and was tough. If you're going to charge $41 for a filet, it needs to be better than Outback Steakhouse quality. By the time our waiter came back to check on us, my boyfriend was almost done with his (very bland) whitefish. We never saw a manager out on the dining floor let alone never had one come to our table to apologize for all of the issues during our dining experience. A table touch from a manager goes a long way, especially when you're not having a great experience. This place has potential but the service and the food need a lot of work, especially for the price point. We will not be back and do not recommend. read more

We went for happy hour. Food was really good. Bar service was terrible! We waited a really long time between drinks, of which no fault of our waiter. There's nothing worse than reminding supporting staff that you ordered 2 drinks because it was taking so long and they slam down your extra drink on the table without saying a word and walks away. Then I noticed a floatie in my water- a slimy piece of hair- then again supporting staff just puts down a fresh glass and walks away. Sadly we will not return and will not recommend ever! read more

Great place! We were in the area and a bit early for dinner so we wound up just sharing some appetizers between the two of us: steak skewers, sushi roll, and truffle fries. That plus the bread (fantastic) made for a very filling meal. Everything was delicious. Our server was friendly, very helpful and attentive (because it was early we were the only ones in the dining area but seemed like it would have been the same even if it were packed).
