4.5 stars. The way I found out about this place was following a bunch of Italian kids (alright, that is kinda creepy), but that's how you know it is good gelato. I did not know about Venchi before visiting Italy but one thing I can say is that the products, both gelato and chocolate, have very high quality. While I'm pretty sure if this location, in such a touristy area, is probably busy all the time, I was impressed with how professional the staffs were. They were all smiling and moved very fast. The shop was also very cute, cozy and decorated with colorful gelato and chocolate figures. Venchi has quite a huge selection of gelato flavors. I went with vanilla and pitaschio while my brother went with one of their dark chocolate flavor. Both were delicious. The gelato was thick and creamy but it did not feel heavy at all. A good thing about it was that I could walk around for half an hour during mid-summer in Rome's old quarter and the gelato did not even melt. Also, there were a few selection of cones decorated with sprinkles and chocolate sauce, perfect if you're serious about your 'gram. Of course, being a famous brand, Venchi would not have the feeling of a local Italian gelato vendor if that's what you're looking for, but it is good authentic gelato and would not disappoint if you're looking for something good for your palate. read more

Amazing gelato!! Some of the best I had in Italy. We had chocolate, mango, crema, and cappuccino and I wanted to get on line for more. But we decided to gelato hop and try another place nearby as well (this place was better). The chocolate had pieces of chocolate pieces in it and they were chocolate chips, a dark chocolate, smaller pieces, and higher quality. The mango tasted so fresh, ripe, and natural. The cappuccino was light, milky, and tasted like good coffee. The crema was a standard cream flavor. It was yellowish in color. It sat in the sidelines while the other flavors shined. All in all I say you can taste the quality ingredients. They also sell chocolate. I would love to try their chocolate. With the waterfall of chocolate streaming down behind the counter who wouldn't. read more

This shop is a mad-house!! You can smell chocolate as you walk down the block. Then, you see the line of customers out the front door. My first experience with Venchi was the one in Milan three years ago... this time in Rome, Venchi place is really crowded and there's always a queue so we are always waiting. I wish they have more options for milk chocolate, because we prefer the regular one without nuts. Their gelato is delicious and really soft! Venchi has the best Italian chocolate. This store has their very classic/traditional assortments wrapped in adorable boxes. I come here to buy my gifts; you can't go wrong. The gelato is decadent, creamy, and almost heavy. It's delicious, but not entirely the best gelato out there. Prices, compared to my other favorite gelaterie, are higher: €3.50 for a small (2 flavors) when the average would be from €1.5-€2.5. I come here all the time for the chocolate, but only once for each visitor I have in Rome. read more

Please be careful, they will rip you off if they notice you are a tourist!!! It was my second visit (first was fine) but this time the young man who served us tonight totally ripped us off. I ordered one flavor on a cone and charged me €4,50 (the size of a large with a recommended 3 flavors). I should have been charged for a small given the amount I received and the singular flavor. He did the same exact thing to my sister!! This is how I knew it was ultra shady, he rung us up and we paid. However! He did not give us a receipt, which is super illegal in Italy. 2 minutes later we returned and demanded the receipt and the woman who attended us gave us a horrified look. She asked if we had ordered smalls and the guy told her large and she looked at him puzzled. The gelato is good here but if you must do not let the gentleman help you!! He will try to rip you off! My absolute favorite gelato chain. Yes, we tried Grome, we tried all the others, but this was the best of the best. We raced all over Rome to find it over the summer, and I recall the first time when we finally got wind of its location from some other tourists, we raced past Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and thousands of years of Roman history to make it to Venchi at 1150pm, just before it closed at midnight! It felt like the Amazing Race, like gladiators triumphant in our quest - because we had heard that Venchi was in Venice but we had no idea it was in Rome, our first stop! Stepping into the cool air conditioned shop, with other last minute stragglers coming in for their little scoops of heaven, I ended up ordering a 5 Euro 3 flavor massive gelato as a reward. Niccoleta (hazelnut), Fondante chocolate and Aztec chocolate they were, and all those swirls of heavenly goodness calmed my nerves and soothed my racing heart (we literally overheard the location from other tourists at our dinner spot around 11pm so we gulped dinner down and raced from Trevi to the Spanish steps for the 3rd time that day... Other than Gelato, they also sell chocolate, which I bought two packs of Fondante back for keeps. I'm just finishing the last morsels now and dreaming of going back some day! read more

The ice cream here is amazing ! There is a line but don't be discouraged wait! It's so worth it. I purchased some cho late hazelnut spread and I wish I would have gotten a few more jars of it. It's amazing. I have already dipped just about every fruit I come across in it. As far as Gelato goes I can't say because it taste like ice cream to me. Real gelato is made a little differently and this has a more cream consistency. Wither way it's amazing. As I was reading travel blogs, this gelateria kept popping up so I figured I would have to try it before I left Italy. They have a great variety of chocolate bars, truffles and "make your own" bags of chocolate. They also have a very impressive variety of gelatos to choose from. I chose a small cup of the "mascarpone" flavor and I was slightly disappointed. I thought it would be more creamy but instead it tasted a little like a sorbet of some sort. The saving grace was the walnuts that were hidden throughout that I would find here and there. That was a nice bit of flavor when I wasn't overly enjoying my gelato. If you are in need of chocolates, I would suggest stopping in but for gelato there are less touristy and much tastier options to choose from! read more

I spent an hour online searching through Venchi's website looking for a listing of their local stores. The welcome chocolates my hotel had put in my room got me started on this quest for deliciousness. And then, lo and behold, I randomly stumbled upon their shop during a jog around the Spanish Steps neighborhood. The gelato is delicious- I'm not a gelato expert, but I know good food, and this was delightful. The extra dark chocolate, combined with cappuccino, was amazing. They sell chocolates individually wrapped, in a glass case where you can select them and put together a gift box, and already wrapped up in boxes. Great for gifts. Pricey, yes, but the chocolate is excellent. I recommend the chocaviar and the Rum chocolates. Excellent. The staff was very pleasant as well. read more

I came here for the gelato, their chocolate flavours are best in Rome from my experience. The intensity of the chocolate is very profound. This shouldn't be surprising considering it's primarily a chocolate store. I also tried a couple of other flavours that were kind of blah. This place is expensive. I don't remember how much I paid, but it was a lot. Despite the price, if you're in Rome, you need to try their gelato or ice cream at least once. It's unlike any other. I got stracciatella and dark chocolate gelato and it was creamy deliciousness. If you want chocolate instead of gelato, they have box sets in addition to individual pieces, so you can get as little (or as much) as you want. We'd been to dozens of gelaterias throughout our stay in Italy, and I was expecting much of the same, which would not have been shabby. But oh my gosh was this ever a revelation beyond my imagination. -I had the lemon/basil and my husband had caramel nougat. We gobbled it, and went back, and on our second trip, I had strawberry and my husband had pistachio. The noteworthy feature of this place is that the sorbet (which is exclusively what I get), is not at all icy or grainy. Instead it's as creamy and decadent as the richest double fat gelato, it literally slips and slides and slithers down the tongue. In sane. No idea how they do it. It's a modest little storefront and a tiny interior, barely enough room for three of us, but packed to the gills with flavor and texture, explosively bold and rich taste. It was just the tiniest bit more expensive than other competing, but I would have paid double just to get the quality f their ingredients and ingredients. They also add a little wafer, exactly the part of a cone, so that you can dip your wafer into your sorbet or gelato (if you're getting it in a cup), and still get the illusion of licking a cone. read more
