    The menu with Vegan options!

I had booked marked this place a few months ago and remembered just in time as I was leaving the religious congregation that I was visiting just a couple of blocks away. We had very little time so decided to pick up some quick takeaway. Ordered a Kalga (according to the it is supposed to taste like chicken) Wrap, a vegan Cookies and Cream Milkshake and Masala (spiced) Wedges. It seemed to be a quick serve, but the order took anything but quick which was a big disappointment. Second there is another mandir ( a Hindu temple) next door which complicated the parking situation quite a lot. First the Cookies and Cream Milkshake was close to the real one, but could still taste the coconut milk aftertaste. A tad too sweet for us. Nevertheless 3.5/5. The Wrap made vegan, was a a complete disaster. We have faux meat (chicken, beef, fish) however the Kalga warp is nowhere close to the real thing. Not even close to faux chicken we have had. The texture and taste was completely different and tasteless. Not chewy, not seasoned and had a red outer lining that tasted and seemed weird. The pieces were tiny squares. The Wrap was a complete turnoff. (1/5) The spiced Wedges again was disappointing. The sauce was tangy perhaps the same they use for chaat (the tamrind chutney/sauce). The spices were non present and the Wedges would have tasted better plain! (2/5) Wonder how their Pizzas are and other dishes are. I was hoping to make this spot my favourite Vegan stop, but was let down.

Tiny little place tucked away in a plaza... took my friends for a masala chai... Its a small little vegetarian fast food restaurant. There is 2 tables as its more of a take out place. So we ordered their masala chai and it was quite good, they cooked and steeped it very well... This is a pure vegetarian pizza & desi snacks joint and quite a good one.

Got there at 9:45, 15 minutes before closing and refused to do a take out order. Not impressed.

Veggie Paradise specialises in Veg take-out (call ahead), Frozen/Dried meals and ingredients. I write "Veg" 'cause it may be even Vegan, as opposed to just Vegetarian. They also do custom vegan/vegetarian cakes/pastries. This place is run by 2 sisters and their workers. As soon as Sandra heard that I wanted something to eat, she prepped me with an Asian meal - as opposed to their other meals that are more popular amongst gwai-lo. Meal comprised of a soup (looked like Tom Yum, but not sweet/spicy), a separate plate with Rice, Bok Choy (chopped with garlic), & a portion of fermented Mustard Greens with Green Peas (this was medium spicy). The meal was tasty, yet rather homey as it wasn't overly salted. I really felt like I was eating at an aunt's house! This place is located in a rather industrial, catering to Vegans/Vegetarians (or people who just enjoy the occasional veg meal), so just call ahead if you want to order something! The sisters will even offer you a sample if it's available. :)

Ok, so I rarely write reviews. I find them a bit of a waste of time, and I'm firmly against writing…read moreone if you dislike the restaurant. Hence why we're here. Well, at first I was a bit on the fence about ordering cause of the vegetarian/vegan menu, I like my meat, love meat, got to have my protein dammit! But wow! was I ever surprised and happy about following my gut and choosing to go there. You see, I'm from Vancouver, and if you know a bit about my hometown is that you know we have a very large asian population. Heck, I'd even go as far as saying it's my second language, (my first language is English and my parents are Chilean...never spoken a word of it) but I've been around it so much somehow, I feel I could get by given the chance. So, by examining the pictures from the online menu, I thought to myself; If the food is anything remotely like the pictures, it looks exactly like my fav spot in Vancouver - Congee Noodle King- also a must try if you're in east Vancouver. Just trust my absent Asian ancestry ok?! I ordered the N65. Fried Noodles with Steamed and Stir-Fried Bean Curd, and as a request asked them to make it spicy to which they happily and kindly obliged. This dish was packed with flavour. Oh em gee! Loaded with fresh crunchy veggies, the noodles were spot on: thin, velvety and a lot of them. Makes for some healthy slurps! Oh, did I mention the meat? No, I didn't, because it didn't have any, and I have never not missed something so much. The crispy fried bean curds tasted like deep fried spare ribs. My pupils dilated a bit. And that's ok cause I went into a food coma, got to heaven and wrote a review about the very first Asian restaurant I try in Toronto and I'm already planning to go back. If you give this place less than 5 stars you don't know food, Asian food or how to speak it so go on and chew on some meat! Thank you for the wonderful and friendly service as well. I shall return. How do you say that in Mandarin? Cheers! - Patricio

I tried their soy chicken drum sticks, kim chi, dumplings, siu mai, and radish cake. My absolute favourite and would recommend is the radish cake!! It is so good. The kim chi was off-putting and was drenched in whatever sauce. The dumplings are also really good as well. I like the layout and aesthetics of the restaurant. One thing to note also was that the employees just seemed miserable. I understand we came an hour before closing but they just seemed miserable and sort of ticked off that we were coming an hour before closing.

What made the food less enjoyable was the service. The dosa are best eaten fresh off the griddle and two of the dosas came without chutney and sambhar without the server realizing that it was missing. When pointed it took several minutes to come. The Rasam Vadas did not come till we had to remind them several times, and last (4th) reminder, the server tells that we did not order. We ordered one Gudbud Ice Cream, two came. We paid for two. The description says strawberry ice cream, it was mango. The washrooms were flooded and they just could not manage it. Several folks were upset at the servers and manager. They just couldn't handle. The food was sub par when compared to other MTRs. The Masala Dosa was "well done" rather than golden brown. The idlis that MTR set a gold standard for was not at all MTR quality. The Medu Vada looked as if we made at home rather than restaurant made. The food is good - but MTR is known for it quality and that every dish that comes out is a 5 star dish. Other restaurant who serve this food can get by, but MTR has set a higher standard.

They are only open Monday to Friday but they do have a huge assortment of vegan and vegetarian Chinese Food. What I like is that they tell you what is vegan and what is vegetarian. 90% of the store is vegan, but anything that contains milk or dairy is pointed out on the sign. They have a huge assortment of Asian vegan and vegetarian food. I purchased a couple of frozen entrees (black pepper "beef" with rice and "chicken" tikka masala). The entrees are around $7 to $8. They are frozen and all you have to do is pop them in the microwave for 4 minutes. Very tasty. In addition, I also purchased packages of vegan shiu mai, vegan BBQ pork buns and vegan curry buns. Shiu mai was $14 for 35 small dumplings, and the buns were around $4 for 6 or so. While slightly pricier than real meat, it definitely looked and tasted like the real thing. Unfortunately, if you're vegan or vegetarian and want mock meats, it is more expensive than real meat, ironically. However, the majority of the food here is hand made, and also cheaper. Verdict: if you're looking for Chinese vegan/vegetarian food, something different than the typical stuff you get at Canadian supermarkets, then I'd definitely recommend you check it out. However, just a word of warning, some of the stuff is higher in sodium, so this should be more of a treat than an everyday thing (unless you don't care about your salt intake, then go for it).
