I went to the cafeteria to see if they had a daily special for breakfast. I also brought a jar of milk from home to work. The cashier was busy having a conversation with a coworker or teacher or someone in admin. She was just outside of the register. The cashier saw me with the jar of milk when I was leaving the cash register and accused me of theft. She asked me two questions: " Did I get the milk from the cafeteria". My reply was, " no, you don't sell things in Jars". "Did I pour the milk in the cafeteria into my jar." My response. "No." The cashier needs to think things through better. If i was going to steal milk I would just drink it or hide it in my pocket or bag. Or I needed milk I'd drink it there. Not pour it into a jar and then take it out of the facilty. The cashier, who I know has worked there for a while has to use reasonable common sense. She didn't even apologize or say sorry. read more

This place is up a couple flights of stairs once you enter VCC. As my friend describes it, a gem. I couldn't agree more. If you're looking for bang for your buck this is the place to go. It opens from 1130am to 1pm. Most of the entrees are $8. There is a good variety of meat dishes and some vegetarian options too. And the roast of the day. You also get 2 veggie sides and 1 starch side to go with your main. I believe it costs extra if you get it to go in a take out container. The food is usually gourmet delicious. A restaurant could probably sell the same thing and plate it a bit nicer for twice the price. Definitely cannot complain for $8. Well I wish I got more food. I'm a big eater, but it should be good for most people. Sometimes it gets a bit chaotic because the students seem to be confused while serving the hungry masses and slows things down. VCC cafeteria has a dinner service. Tonight they offered 5 entrees, 2 soups. I'm not sure if they had a vegetarian options. Tonight I had the roast lamb which comes with your choice of 3 sides. They had two varieties of rice, mash potatoes, roast potatoes, zucchini, braised cabbage and squash. I opted for the mash potatoes and double zucchini. The lamb was excellent, nicely seasoned and cooked well. The potatoes could have used salt and the zucchini was perfect. Not bad for $8.50 including tax. Best of all I have enough for lunch tomorrow. Fast food that tastes as though it was made at home. Good choice! read more

First of all, please keep in mind that most of the chefs here are students, but their food is above average, reasonably priced, and delicious. I ordered a basic breakfast meal, which came with: 1) potatoes 2) 4 half sliced toast with butter 3) cup of fruit (kiwi, watermelon, grapes, and strawberries) 4) cheese omelet It costs $4.73 if I recall correctly. Despite having to pay extra if you want something to drink with it, but tell us where can you buy breakfast that will keep you full for less than $5? The only problem I had was that the potatoes was kind of dry, although I didn't mind it being the way it was because I wasn't expecting a gourmet meal anyways. Bottom line, this is the place to go if you are around the neighborhood and is looking for some cheap meals. read more

One thing that has always tantalized me but I've never had the opportunity to try was VCC's Cafeteria. To my dismay though, their gourmet kitchen was closed on this occasion and only the Asian kitchen was operating as the current batch of students were not yet at the point where they could make said dishes. Basically, it's a food court style offering where you choose rice or noodles, two side dishes, and your choice of garlic veggies or not. I'd have to say in both cases, the vegetables were AMAZING. they have this garlicky glaze to them that is so tasty, I could just drop the side dishes and have straight up vegetables with a starch lol. The fried chicken was very crispy and tasty and the squid had a semi-sweet glaze to it. Would pass on the pork chop and the mushrooms if I had the chance to again as they weren't the best. Starches were passable though. Overall, keeping in mind that all of these dishes were made by students, it's of decent quality and a fairly large portion of food for downtown. So can't really go wrong with a big, filling downtown lunch though eh? read more

This review is for the JJ restaurant which is part of the culinary training program. With that said 'cause they were students in training I had to adjust my standards and expectations of service. I've eaten at many schools and am a student myself in the culinary arts, therefore, can appreciate and be patient in these types of circumstances. We had a table of 20+, therefore, I ate a snack before hand in preparation for the training speed. Because it is part of the culinary program the price is extremely reasonable for 4 star quality food. It was a buffet for $23 with the quality of food = a steal. It was cute seeing all the students in their learning school. I am very proud of their work and they were proud of themselves graduating soon. I do have some suggestions with the food, however, rather than posting here since it is after all a student study, will bring some suggestions and thoughts in pvt. Check this out...very well worth it. The dessert buffet was a display of sugary delights and cavity assaults that were like a dream. Everything that you eat here is a work in progress due to the fact that it is the students in the culinary arts program that are responsible for everything that you eat here. Because of that you're going to get the chance to try all kinds of interesting foods with the best part being that all meals seem to be valued at under $8. The menu is always changing around, so there are always good, varied choices available everyday. Today I had the strip steak with stuffing with mashed potatoes, mushrooms and a corn/pea medley. Nothing really to write home about, but nothing I couldn't eat either. Best part - the meal was $6.80! While there is a chance that you will go there and have something that tastes great, for the most part you'll receive middling-quality food. Well worth the risk considering the price. If you're looking for restaurant style cheap eats, and lots of it, the cafeteria at Vancouver Community College's downtown campus is the place to go. In addition to the sandwich and burger grill, there's a counter for Asian food and a counter for the culinary program. The culinary program counter is where I always head. Students from this program, under the watchful eye of instructors, produce restaurant style food at cafeteria prices. The quality is pretty good (keeping in mind they are students after all), and fairly consistent. The menu changes daily, but always includes red meat, fish and chicken options. Every plates gets one starch and two veggie portions. Be warned though, the culinary counter is only open from 11-1:30, so there's usually a lineup. read more

The cooks at the VCC Cafeteria are all students and work here as part of their culinary training program. The students work under the watchful eye of their teachers and because of that everything tastes very good and is priced very decently. They offer 4 different stations, a salad bar, a line for burgers, a breakfast station, and another line for cooked entree-type foods. Usually I opt for the salad as there is no line up and I recommend trying the tofu salad, the pasta salad or the tomato brococcini salad when they have it. Sometimes when I am feeling extremely hungry, I will go for their cooked foods which is an entree dish that comes with 2 sides for around $8. Another must-try is their scalloped potatoes which are amazing. When coming here. please do remember the staff are students and they are all learning, so try to be patient. I came here once in September on what must have been the first week of school and I felt so bad for the student who was manning the burger station alone during lunch hour. Overall, I definitely recommend getting lunch here if you are in the area. read more

Going in here feels like coming in to a cafeteria that is monitored by a professor so that way they do not mess up in their cooking or make their food taste bad. I got one of the lunch specials which was around $10. For 4 star food cooked by college students, I was impressed with what they offered. I would come back if I was needing a quick lunch, but it is not a place I would go for a social outing. The staff are students yes but man do they ever produce some yummy food. I can get a big lunch for less than $10 that looks and tastes like it came from someplace fancy. I think the quality of the food and service is a testament not just to the students but the quality of VCC's culinary arts program! Apart from the price and food that keep me coming back for more, I love how the menu changes frequently so I'm always trying new dishes or eating something I knew nothing about before. Stopped in after a few months away, and was shocked at the change. Positive: the grill and hot entree sections are clearly separated, a sandwich bar has been added, the layout of the (unfortunately too small at mealtimes) serving space is generally more inviting, and the students could more easily interact with the public and seemed friendlier. Negatives: the quality of the entrees and deserts has gone down. Portions have shrunk. Real plates are a thing of the past (everyone gets a cardboard take-away container), and metal cutlery is long gone. I was told I was entitled to two vegetables and a starch, but there was only one vegetable (red cabbage) available, which is ridiculous at noon, the beginning of lunch. My rice was under-cooked. How do you screw up rice? VCC cafeteria used to be the best deal in town, but not anymore. Hope the situation improves in the autumn term. read more

I've been going to VCC for over 5 years nearly everyday, and after the re-design of the cafeteria and new policy on serving food on cardboard, I have to say it's not worth the money anymore. I used to laud the food, quality and choices, but sad to say it's gone downhill alot. I would not recommend the gourmet section anymore as the portions have shrunk and the price increased, with no increase in quality or quantity. Whoever is doing the accounting and pricing should re-think the costs because the line-ups have dropped dramatically, about 30-40% from what I can see. Think about it bean counters, less customers because of higher prices is not going to get you the break - even point that you want. The staff should re-think all the changes and make the customers happy again cuz in the food industry you better or your going out of business. read more

VCC Cafetaria is one of my favorite lunch spots during the work week. For the same price as fast food ($7.73 including tax) you get a main (a selection of fish, beef, chicken, lamb, etc) plus 3 side dishes (potatoes, vegetables, rice, etc). Sometimes I look down at my plate in wonderment - it's like a Thanksgiving feast! When I tried the Paleo diet for a month and cut out starch carbs like rice, pasta and bread, VCC Cafetaria was one of the few places I could eat that was satifying (i.e. not just a salad!) because I could select a variety of veggies with my main. Ambience is a bit lacking as to be expected of a cafeteria. It's not a fancy place but a great choice for a quick, healthy lunch. read more

The culinary department of VCC brings hot meal service to the cafeteria three times daily and it's a great deal. A choice of several meats or fish with three sides for 7.75! It is served cafeteria style so any food which was meant to have a delicate flavor doesn't tend to do so well. But the variety and the price make VCC well worth a lunch visit. read more

A great deal for downtown Vancouver. There are always good choices to choose from and the menu changes daily! It's always a struggle for me to choose what I really want since everything looks delicious. Don't get discouraged that the food is student made. They seem to give more care to their performance and service than any place around. Besides the VCC cafeteria, there is also a VCC restaurant right next room for a more formal occasion. By the looks of it, the restaurant also carries good selection with very fair pricing. read more
